When I arrived just before sunset down at the Newport Pier a few weeks ago, I started shooting as soon as I hit the beach. The late afternoon light was fantastic and as I reached the shoreline, I was immediately struck by the incredible reflection coming off of that remarkably flat beach. As the clouds above turned orange, I began to try to frame the pier into my shot along with the incredible reflection which was literally all around me at this point. As I lined up the shot, a little boy, probably around 4 years old or so, bounced into my frame, just as I was about to take a bracket or two. At first, I immediately went into my frustrated photographer mode and began fuming at the parents behind him who neglected to tell him to get the heck out of the way of the nice man who was trying to bracket a set of shots before all the good light was gone. But before I actually had time to get really irritated, I saw his silhouette against the sand and instantly decided to include him in the frame. In this particular shot, it appeared as if he was literally reaching down to touch the clouds reflected all around him on the beach.
The take away for me here was the realization that sometimes you end up liking the shot you thought was ruined more than the shot you had originally composed.

With the sun going down I worked my way along the beach, I decided to use the green weed and pool in the foreground to lead into the scene.

another archival shot...this one is a wider angle view of a sunset I posted a few months ago. I packed up and left the beach at fort desoto thinking the light show was over when the sun disappeared below the horizon. As I was driving out of the park, the sky exploded into this incredible color. Having stowed my gear, I pulled over, grabbed my G9 and set it on a bean bag on the roof of the car and took several shots with the timer. I feel really fortunate to have seen this one.

On Thursday night I decided to something a little different. I had a few extra minutes so instead of going to my usual "go to" locations I headed in the opposite direction. I headed in the opposite direction so I wouldn't even be tempted to go to my "go to" spot. I drove around for awhile until I ended up at the corner of Polk and 56th. the corn is getting pretty high but there was this one dip in the field that I could use to capture more of the corn stalks.
I need to do more shots like these, need to get better at not having a reflection (water) in my sunset photos. I ended up using two graduated ND filters to get both the sky and the field the way that I wanted.
I also met one of the neighbors while taking sunset photos tonight and had a nice conversation about the local eagles. It is always nice when I meet people while taking photos, a little added bonus.
Was driving along when I saw the sun setting over Tsuu Tina Nation in Calgary. Stopped on the side of the road, climbed a hill and came face to face with this view.
A sunset cruise is leaving Navy Pier for a beautiful view of downtown Chicago as the sun is setting.
seems every time I catch a hilltop in an image...someone is standing there decorating it...as this was quite late I thought I had gotten away with a people free shot but no - when I got back and blew the image up,,,there were the people...probably some one catching the hill top sunset ...
