The quest is finally over... my final species of grasshopper and bush cricket from the British list, and what a beauty it is. This is the rarest species too, and the only one not found in my home county of Dorset...which sort of explains why it took me 4 years to get a photo. It would have been longer if it had not been for some very helpful experts who happened to be on site at the same time.
The key to finding this species as with many Orthoptera is to listen for their song, in this case sounding like a freewheeling bicycle. Unfortunately this species only sings till midday and it was a long walk to the hidden valley in the South Downs where it still exists.
Day after day,
Alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
Well on his way head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices is talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
And nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never shows his feelings,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
woah ooh,
Round and round and round.
He never listens to them,
He knows that they're the fool
They don't like him,
The fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.

Tree, fog, sunrays....... and a damn power line. What a dreadful place for someone to put a power line.
