The Get Global Student Club along with the Department of Global Studies and Geography held its first Diversity Dinner, “Dinner in El Salvador,” on Friday evening, November 16, 2012. Senior Geography major, Danny Bautista, moderated the evening. Some 30 students, faculty, and Bautista family members enjoyed this successful evening—the first in a series of planned “Diversity Dinners.” With funding provided by the HCLAS Dean’s Office as well as the Office of the Provost, this series of diversity events aims to broaden understanding across cultural divides and to foster student curiosity in our increasingly globalized world.

After a successful previous two decades Mercedes managed to start the 1990s in a good way.

L441LVV was a silver Mercedes C220 Auto Not Found on the DVLA site, but the last MOT Expired on 31 August 2019. I suspect it has had a certificate of destruction issued since then.

L788KRP was a red Mercedes E200 1998cc last taxed on 27 April 1994 as listed as exported.

L345GJD is a Central London registration that produces no results.

L784KRP comes up as Not Enough Information, which suggests it was given a personalised registration. In the same series as L788KRP.

All apart from L345GJD were Northampton registered.

This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.

Event Management and Electronic Timing was provided by Irish company Precision Timing. Their website is here with links to results from the race www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer

This photograph is part of a larger set of photographs taken at today's event. Photographs were taken at the start, 400 meters gone, 400 meters to go, 1km gone, and at the 9KM/4KM mark. The URL of the full set of photographs is www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157636717081724/

Overall Race Summary and Logistics

Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.

Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.

Race Course:

This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.

Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.

Location Map:

Yes - of course you can. Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

How can I get full resolution copies of these photographs?

To prevent missue of these photographs there is a watermark embedded into the images. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution without the watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Today I was fortunate to witness a successful Peregrine attack and this was no ordinary kill as the Peregrine literally picked a duck off the surface of the River Parrett. This was a true first for me. At WWT Steart Marshes, Somerset there are Peregrines about during the winter, so as is normal for me, I made sure that I was on site before dawn. I was surprised locate not one but 3 birds on one of the National Grid Pylons that carry electricity from the Hinkley Point Power Station. Anyway one bird flew off almost as soon as I arrived. The other two were preening and completing short flights around the pylon. As the sun came up, the behaviour of one bird changed. It started to look far more alert and was looking up and down the river from its lofty position on the pylon. After about 5mins, it was gone, straight into the stoop, rapid acceleration and down towards the river. I followed this through the camera but I was now looking direct into the sun, so I just could work out what the target was. I didn’t realise that it was after a duck (Teal, I think) on the surface. The Peregrine missed on the first pass, but the managed to grab the duck by the head on the second pass and lift it clean out the water. I really though that the duck was going to be too heavy and that it would be dropped. But no, the Peregrine tucked that dead duck up underneath and flew off accompanied by other Peregrine for a tasty breakfast. The sequence started at 08:19:48 and finished at 08:20:48. One of the best 60 seconds of wildlife watching I have ever had, I just wish that I wasn’t looking into the sun for most of the sequence.

Almost 3500 internally displaced people have been successfully relocated from the UN Protection of Civilians site in Juba to a new site within the community in a joint effort between the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and humanitarian agencies.

“This is the first movement of displaced people of this magnitude out of the UN Juba protection site. Almost all of those relocated were women and children,” said the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, David Shearer. “They had expressed a strong desire to leave the UN site and to be reunited with their husbands and other family members. Early indications and, in my discussions with those who moved, is that they are pleased to be back in the wider community.”

The combined effort to relocate the families to an existing site at Mangateen in the central city followed an UNMISS-negotiated end to sporadic fighting between various groups within the UN protection camp over the past few weeks that threatened vulnerable civilians inside. Once a resolution was reached and people expressed a desire to leave, humanitarian agencies and UNMISS worked quickly and cooperatively to establish temporary housing at Mangateen along with clean water, sanitation and health services.

“All those involved in the relocation process realized the seriousness of the situation given the large number of vulnerable women and children being moved. It was a true team effort to carry out the massive logistical task of transporting and supporting these families in a new location within just a few days,” said David Shearer.

The Mangateen site has traditionally been managed by the South Sudan Government’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and it will continue to do so. Humanitarian agencies will provide additional assistance on request.

“I am particularly grateful for the Government’s rapid response to this situation which ensured that people were able to be safely moved and accommodated back in the community,” said David Shearer.

“Hundreds of thousands of people fled to UN protection sites across South Sudan out of fear for their lives during the ongoing conflict. But these camps are not a good long-term option for families,” said David Shearer. “If people have the trust and confidence that the environment is safe enough for them to voluntarily return home, UNMISS is poised to assist them. But providing that confidence in the security situation very much lies with the Government.”

Zen Master (Roshi) Bernie Glassman is a world-renowned pioneer in the American Zen Movement. He is a spiritual leader, published author, accomplished academic and successful businessman with a PhD in Appliied Mathematics. Dr. Glassman currently teaches and travels, giving talks and workshops on spiritual practice, socially responsible business and international peacemaking. He is the founder and co-spiritual director of the Zen Peacemakers.

Personal and Education

Bernie Glassman was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1939. His parents were immigrants from Eastern Europe and he grew up in a Jewish family with a strong socialist and Communist orientation. After graduating from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, he went to work for McDonnell-Douglas in California in the early 1960s as an aeronautical engineer, concentrating on sending unmanned flights to Mars. He also obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from UCLA. Currently Bernie has two grown children and one grandson.

Zen Training and Teaching

In 1967, Bernie began his Zen studies with Taizan Hakuyu Maezumi Roshi, Founder of the Zen Center of Los Angeles. He became a Zen teacher--Sensei Glassman--in 1976. In 1980 he founded his own Zen Community of New York in the Bronx, New York. He started the Greyston Bakery, at first staffed by Zen students, as a livelihood for the Community, and then made it a vehicle for social enterprise in Yonkers, 3 miles north (see below). In 1995 Bernie Glassman received inka, or the final seal of approval, from his teacher and became known as Roshi Glassman. During that year and in 1996 he served as Spiritual Head of the White Plum Lineage, comprising hundreds of Zen groups and centers in the US, Latin America and Europe, as well as the first President of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association of America. His Dharma Family includes dharma teachers, zen priests, zen preceptors, zen entrepeneurs, Christian clergy, Rabbis, Sufi Sheiks and multi-faith peacemakers.

Social Enterprise

Bernie became a social entrepreneur in 1982, articulating a vision that socially responsible businesses can have a double bottom line: generating profits and serving the community. The Greyston Bakery was the first such venture, but it was merely one piece of a larger socially responsible business model which he developed, known as the Greyston Mandala (the Sanskrit mandala can be loosely translated as circle of life), a network of for-profits and not-for-profits working together to improve the lives of individuals and the larger inner city community of southwest Yonkers. Greyston, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on June 11, 2007 (during which time it will honor its founder), provides permanent housing, jobs, job training, child care, after-school programs and a host of other supportive services to a large community of formerly homeless families, advancing the principles of empowerment, empathy, and responsible action. Its main components are:

* Greyston Bakery. Founded in 1982 in the southwest corner of Yonkers, a poor neighborhood beset by high unemployment, violence and drugs, the bakery began to hire people that conventional businesses had deemed “unemployable.” It trained its employees in bakery crafts and soon they were producing some of New York's most expensive, high-end cakes and tarts sold in the city's fanciest eateries. In 1990 it began to produce brownies for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and its revenues shot up dramatically. Since its humble founding, the bakery grew into a successful $6 million business with more than 75 employees. Its hiring remains to this very day "First come, first served," and much of its profits are recycled into seed money for its sister not-for-profits, thus making the entire network more sustainable and financially independent.

* Greyston Family Inn. This is Greyston's housing and support services arm. Since 1986 it has developed hundreds of low-cost permanent apartments for homeless families, a large child care center, and tenant support services as well as after-school programs, providing wraparound support to families trying to come out of the cycle of unemployment, homelessness, and public assistance.

* Maitri Center and Issan House. Opened in 1997, Maitri is a medical center serving 150 people with AIDS-related illnesses. It was among the first facilities in the country to provide alternative care therapies to people with HIV/AIDS. Issan House provides housing for many of Maitri's patients.

The entire Greyston Mandala (as of 2007) hires 175 people and serves at least 1200 men, women and children annually in southwest Yonkers. Its model of integrating for-profits, not-for-profits, and spirituality has been studied by many other nonprofits and cities across the country as well as in universities. Bernie Glassman served as Founder and President/CEO of Greyston from 1982 till he left it in 1996.

Spiritually-Based Social Action and Peacemaking

In January of 1994, while leading a bearing witness retreat in Washington, DC, on the occasion of his 55th birthday, Bernie decided to create the Zen Peacemaker Order, for Zen practitioners dedicated to the cause of peace and social justice. Subsequently, the concept was broadened to become an international, interfaith network called the Peacemaker Community, stressing the integration of spiritual practice and social action through Three Tenets:

* Not-knowing, thereby giving up fixed ideas about ourselves and the universe;

* Bearing witness to the joy and suffering of the world; and

* Loving action for ourselves and the world.

Together with his wife and co-founder, Sandra Jishu Holmes, Bernie left Greyston in the end of 1996 and became President of this large community of spiritually-based activists. He took a leave when his wife died in 1998, but from 2000 till 2004 he continued serving as President, devoting his energy to developing the Peacemaker Community and supporting various social action and peacemaking projects in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States. This organization is now known as Zen Peacemakers.

In 2004 Bernie Glassman began to develop a training campus to teach people the skills of spiritually-based social enterprise and peacemaking called the Maezumi Institute, in Western Massachusetts. In addition, he began to look into new opportunities for social enterprise programs, During 2005 he tried to develop such programs in partnership with local not-for-profits in Greenfield and Turners Falls. Finally, in early 2006, he co-founded the PathMakers Partnership with Entrepreneur Joe Sibilia and Sheriff Michael J. Ashe.

PathMakers Partnership

The PathMakers Partnership is a joint effort of the Zen Peacemakers, Gasoline Alley Foundation and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office to provide housing, jobs and life support services to homeless families and the formerly incarcerated. Zen Peacemakers is overseeing the whole project. The Gasoline Alley Foundation is developing the businesses to provide jobs while Zen Peacemakers is providing the housing and support services, as well as a spiritual nonsectarian vision of the interconnectedness of all life. Part of that vision is a personal pathmaker program for each individual being served, so that s/he can become not just financially independent, but actually pursue a path that brings them into relationship and into community.

Bernie's role in the Partnership is to serve as President of the Partnership and to represent Zen Peacemakers in partnership meetings, articulate the vision for the entire integrated model, and attract more people and resources to the project. Bernie has already obtained a commitment from the Enterprise Foundation to fund the Partnership's first housing project, which will consist of 50 - 80 family units. Due to his construction background in Greyston, Bernie supervised the search for housing properties and the decision that resulted in one final property. Until now he has personally supervised the hiring of the architect and construction project manager, and these report to him. He supervises the acquisition of the initial property and its massive renovation. He is also supervising the development of the pathmaker program for the people to be served by the Partnership. In addition, Bernie does almost all the fundraising and resource development required by Zen Peacemakers for this project. On weekends, when not leading a program, he enjoys refining the website of the organization.

Awards

Bernie was awarded the Ethics in Action Award by the Ethical Culture Society of Westchester and the E-chievement Award by Tom’s of Maine. He was named Man of the Year by the Westchester Coalition of Food Pantries and Social Entrepreneur of the Year by Business Week in 1993. He is a founding board member of the Social Ventures Network, a network of businesses committed to social change, and continues to serve as one of its spiritual leaders.

Publications

Bernie is the co-author, with Rick Fields, of Instructions to the Cook: A Zen Master’s Lessons in Living a Life that Matters (Bell Tower, April 1996), and the author of Bearing Witrness: A Zen Master’s Lessons in Making Peace (Bell Tower, May 1997) and Infinite Circle: Studies in Zen (Shambhala Publication, 2002).
