Here's a closeup shot of the Robby the Robot Float, plus the acetylene torch unit.

For the float, the basic structure is 4 ply mat board covered in aluminum from yogurt container lids. [it has an interesting pattern to it]

The Altair background is from a magazine and the space ship is comprised of a plastic dome, a CD and a container from pre-made jello. After everything was glued together, it was spray painted Krylon Silver.

All of the dials on the front of the float are pieces of jewelry and found objects in my parts box.

As I mentioned in the finished photo caption; this float is based on an existing unit that was used in 1956.

As for the acetylene torch...there was a lot of kit bashing going on here, but the actual dolly for the tanks is just some styrene plastic, some thin aluminum tubing plus some wheels taken from an HO scale vehicle.

Here's the completed photo with everything in place:

Ground clearance is about 0.4mm. Body kit made with 0.5mm sheet styrene, painted using Testors enamel lacquer, original color was midnight blue, sparkle.

I wanted to make a removable version of my bubble vest, so I thought I'd try out another couple of techniques while I was at it.

I made a hairpiece and a "sculpted" mask out of styrene and I'm reasonably happy with the results on these pieces.

I also made a leather sword sheath (the sword can be removed) and I decided to use the Striker mod that I made, as I had nothing better to use it for ; )

Although the fig is not really based on anything in particular, i quite like the overall look and it's certainly one of my more colourful figs!

Scratched BE2c engine from laminated styrene, garden wire, brass tube, copper tube and styrene rod. The cylinders are from a Wingnut Wings Rolls Royce Eagle engine sprue.

A 4mm/ft model I built for a customer some years ago. It's photographed against a backscene that I painted. The "Fina" pumps were hand carved from styrene. My customer wanted a model of his father's garage, which was always surrounded by junk... perfect job for me!

37903 pulls away from Barry with 6B15, the 18:30 Styrene empties from Barry No 1 Dock to BP Baglan Bay on the evening of 26th June 1995. This service ran for a number of years usually three times a week. Being used for chemical traffic the tanks remained relatively clean unlike the fuel oil tanks which quickly became blackened with oil etc.

Kodachrome 64 Slide Scan (35mm)

This was created totally on a whim and it was a joy ride putting it all together.

The Buick Wildcat 1 concept car is a 1/18th scale [ about 19 inches long ] RESIN cast model. Nothing opens or turns on it but it is a wonder to behold.

Looking through photos from mid- 20th Century car shows, many displays were aiming for a modern "classical" look, so here is my take on it. By utilizing an aluminum cake dish, glitter embedded plastic from a drum set, a micro wave dish holder, 4 sheets of ribbed styrene plus a string of micro, battery powered LED lights, I cobbled together a high end, early 1950s "motorama" stage set.

For the Faux magazine cover...I dove into my vintage collection; cutting a pasting as I went along, aiming for that "certain look" that only car magazines had back then.

No disrespect was intended! I truly love the vibe of those times.

The Wildcat Concept 1 model is by Minichamps and worth every penny.

"The only thing that can kill Barnes is Barnes!"

I doubt that many people HAVEN'T seen this film, but if you are one of the few, watch it!, Tom Berenger plays an absolute monster in this film. The film is good, but it's all about Barnes for me, a truly scary dude!!

About the fig: I carved the scar into the figs face, in order to try and convey the deep scarring that Barnes has across his face.

All the pouches, backpack, boot, trouser and shirt trim are all made of good 'ol Styrene and the headscarf and rifle sling are made from fabric.

I nearly finished this fig using an M16, until I realised that Barnes doesn't use an M16 (what? a Nam character that DOESN'T use an M16). He actually uses a Colt 635P, which is actually meant to be an XM177, so I modded Minifig.cat M4T1 to try to get it to look as close as I could to the Colt. I actually think it looks a little more like the XM177, although these are all so similar to me that I think you can only see the differences when they're all put side by side.

Lastly, this is my the first time I've used an SLR for my shot, so I'm well happy that I've finally got some detail in there!!

Comments and faves are always welcome ; )

I was inspired to create an early 1920s pickup with a custom screened in cargo area.

This type of arrangement was a fairly common practice back then that allowed for greater carrying capacity along with some protection from the elements. Having canvas side curtains were even more helpful. [Hmmm, maybe I'll make some!]

When doing research on the web, I came across a few pickups that featured enclosed cabs, which had a very "era specific" feel about them.

Further web skimming brought me to the Jimmy Flintsone, 1/24th scale resin cast body site that actually offered such a cab.

Ok, I'll take one!

The chassis, fenders, cowl, and wheels were donated by an old Danbury Mint diecast model, and the rear cargo area was handmade, using styrene plastic and wire mesh.

The whole process was a bit more complicated than I anticipated, but the results were well worth it.

Just wanted to share this little side project.

Canada has already had its share of wildfires this season, and the smoke from these wildfires is slowly drifting south over the United States' Midwest. The drifting smoke can be seen in this Terra satellite image over Lake Michigan, as well as parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.

The smoke released by any type of fire (forest, brush, crop, structure, tires, waste or wood burning) is a mixture of particles and chemicals produced by incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials. All smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter (PM or soot). Smoke can contain many different chemicals, including aldehydes, acid gases, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, styrene, metals and dioxins. The type and amount of particles and chemicals in smoke varies depending on what is burning, how much oxygen is available, and the burn temperature.

Exposure to any type of smoke should be avoided if possible, but especially by those with respiratory issues, the elderly, and children.

My new packaging!! Hurray! I am so relieved to finally have something picked out and purchased!

I bought from Paper presentation alomst everything seen here.

I purchased 9x12 sized pouchettes in Olive green and chocolate, along with coordinating 5x7 envelopes and circle stickers. I also purchased the belly bands from there. It took about a week for everything to arrive!!

In the folder pictured I have 2 8x10s mounted on styrene, as well as a bunch of 5x7..like 25 of them. They fit great!

In the desert wasteland, everything is scarce, and uninhabitable. Only the desert nomads dare to live there, salvaging scrap, building weapons, and surviving the harsh terrain. Their excellent skills in fashioning dangerous weaponry such as the energy staff and the toxic gauntlet help them fend off enemies as they move from place to place in the rough terrain.

Hope you like this one guys, as it took several months before it was finally completed a few weeks ago.

The vest was made around the time Richard released information on how to make a vest out of credit card, and that's just what this vest is made of! I didn't have styrene to make the pouches, so i had to use wood instead =P The bandolier is from and old star wars action figure.

The face mask is actually very interesting: it used to be the faceplate for the episode II c3po action figure that I had, which was destroyed in the fire. However, the charred remains were found, and I used the faceplate, inserting bits of trans green plastic into the eyeholes. Then I attached it to the head via a custom strap made from rubber band.

The left arm was made by Pecovam, and I must say, I love painting Brick Affliction! It was very fun painting it, Andrew, thank you for the arm. The hand was sculpted by me.

The legs have those TLG handheld claw weapons that were first seen in prince of Persia sets, I thought they made good leg armor =P

The staff was actually partly inspired by Shilo, After I found out from him that Playmobil's weapons work with Lego. So I bought myself a spear and chopped it up, and added various bits.

The hood I sculpted from green stuff.

Anyways guys, I hope you like this fig, I put a lot of time and effort into it and I hope to get some positive feedback =)

Also, If you guys really like him, you can pick him up at Republic Customs dot com, where he will soon be available =)

Launched in 1968, the Méhari used the 2CV-derived Dyane engine and chassis, with a simple tubular frame clad in colourful plastic body panels.

Conceived as a recreational utility vehicle its light weight, soft suspension and simple ruggedness gave it go-anywhere abilities and it became a ubiquitous sight in vineyards, beach resorts and those sleepy, sunny villages I recall from holidays in Europe in the late ‘80s

Some bits of styrene and other stuff from the parts bin combined with about an hour of work.

This is one of my first model structures I built, which was based on a Plasticville toy railroad building I had when I was young.

There was something about this design, even back then, that encapsulated every style element of the 1950's, so I thought it would be perfect for Elgin Park.

The Orbit Ice Cream stand shows up in only a few of my earlier photos because I had given it to a friend of mine who then used it in a permanent display of his.

[ I know it has a good home and is well taken care of.]

The building itself is about 6 inches at it's tallest point and is made of Sintra plastic, styrene and Gatorboard.

Oh, it's you. It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been really busy being constructed of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. You know, after you murdered me?

Fortunately the Aperture Science Emergency Recreational Building Element Reconstruction Initiative has provided me with a new body. Consequently, testing can recommence immediately.

For Science.

You monster.

Excited, nervous, proud!! I processed 8 prints through WHCC.com. They are 30x20 and 20x20's on 2mm styrene with a lustre coating. I highly recommend them for processing. Fast, inexpensive, with excellent results.

Do you remember Polly Styrene a few shots back, well this is the real thing. ;-)

Black backdrop, off camera Speedlite 430 EXII bounced off umbrella.

Working with the re-issued AMT ChrisCraft model still continues. While doing research on the web, I found numerous photos of this boat with it's spectacular woodwork and chrome trim, which got my imagination going to the point where I gave myself the challenge to replicate the look.

I started out by painting the plastic with an automotive primer to prevent any reaction between the paint and the styrene. After that, the model was sprayed with Terra Cotta, satin finish, Krylon paint and left to dry for a week.

Finally, multiple layers of alcohol based wood stain

were applied with a sable brush to create a scaled down grain.

The next step is to paint the bottom of the boat a solid color, then add the chrome trim.

Can't wait to see how it looks on the trailer!

I want to stress how using found objects is important when being creative. This is why I

enjoy showing behind the scenes. As my Dad would say: "Why reinvent the wheel every time you start something new? What you need is probably already in the room you're in."

Derek Lyons aptly said it's like watching MacGiver. Thank you Derek!

So here is the glamorous dream car photo exposed for what it really is.

-Glitter embedded plastic from a drum.

-A piece of glass from a picture frame

-An inverted aluminum cake plate

-4 pieces of embossed styrene plastic

-A piece of black foamcore with circle cut out

and a microwave dish holder stuck in place.

-Plus a string of battery powered LED lights.

Aside from the expense of the model car and the LED lights [ $3 ] everything else was free.

I hope I'm not sounding too pedantic.

Here is the completed shot:

I wanted to start the new year with a photo shoot.

This particular scene was inspired by an image from 1956, which showed a tired '49 "torpedo body" Chevy parked underneath a billboard featuring a brand new 1956 Ford.

Here is my version of that scene.

For what it's worth, it was very windy and very cold out; I almost froze my tail off.

But I got the shot!

The billboard is handmade from styrene plastic, mat board and jewelry pieces, with the car illustration taken from an old magazine.

The cars are from the Danbury Mint.

Been inspired by the old Metal Gear games lately and I loved the Zombie face paint from Snake Eater.

This was originally supposed to have the orange square camo, but I just had a complete nightmare with it!! so I chose this simpler forest camo (not sure what it's called).

This was another chance to use my Poly Resin (which I love!) along with a mixture of Styrene board and leather strips.

My paintwork is a little thick and is definitely not the best part of my game at the moment.

I'm going to buy some citadels, which will hopefully improve this aspect of my customs.

C&C welcome. If you fave please comment!

I was asked to do this commission by a family friend, on a very limited timescale.

Maybe not quite as polished as some figs, but I'm quite happy with how it turned out overall, although I wish I'd known that Brickforge do Guitars, as I might have saved myself a few hours here!!!

Hair was sculpted from Magic Sculpt, custom Fender Stratocaster made from Styrene sheet and the shirt trim was made using white leather.

I actually quite like this fig and it would have been nice to have one fig in my collection that doesn't have a weapon or isn't inherently evil ; )

Styrene train, from Selgua (Huesca, Spain) to Constantí (Tarragona, Spain) at Vilaverd (Tarragona) towed by the locomotive (rented by Transfesa Rail) Euro4000 335-012

My summer project: A rural station inhabited by bike-riding, apple-eating, smiling folk, people who are happy their trains consistently run a little late and their butterflies have acrylonitrile butadiene styrene in their DNA.

I've had a number of ideas floating around in my head but I've never had the budget nor patience for a large scale layout. Causeway Crossing was a big step for me; I've always been frugal when building, concerned with future part availability. I made this my singular project, and I'm quite happy how it turned out. Lots I learned and lots to improve upon.

A little bit of nostalgia this, from one of my all time favourite, pre-console computer games: Speedball 2 (not to be confused with the many rehashes of the Game, but the original Amiga 500 version!).

The best way to describe it would be a little like a mix of futuristic American football and pinball!

I’m sure that 90% of you probably won’t know what an Amiga 500 was, but I can tell you, it was home computer, with over 1/2 megabyte of RAM!!…in your living room! ; )

About the fig; this is based from a few different still shots in the game (their outfits look different in every one?!) but mostly from the armour upgrade screen.

Loads of different techniques and materials used on this one, including epoxy putty, some leather, polymer clay and a small amount of Styrene, I’ll let you guess what part is made from which material.

I was going to use the Lego American Football helmet, but I wanted it to look exactly right, so I ended up modding a standard Lego crash-helmet and making the face guard out of soldering wire.

Hope you like it, even if you don’t know the game.

Comments, critique and faves are always welcome ; )

First off, let me apologize for being so far behind on viewing all of the great photos you all have been capturing.

This project started after a Thanksgiving spent at my pa's house in the north country, where we ran and photographed the G scale EF4 Little Joe, E79. We both thought how neat it would be to have a pair of Joe's out running. As soon as I returned home, a second EF4 Little Joe was started, E75. I thought it would be a good idea to show some of the stages the E75 has gone through, up to it's current state in the photo's center. 1/8" thick styrene and 1/4" acrylic are the main components to the project. From heating styrene and wrapping it around a wooden jig for the noses of the Joe, to adding roof detail are represented here. There is still a distance to go on this 1/29th scale brute, but the work gets much easier at this point, with the smaller details taking up these chilly winter days. Stay warm and stay inspired.

Ok, this was just something I got distracted with after White Wolf said that crafting cant be used to make an AR rifle, so Detroitika and myself have kinda taken it as a challenge.

I have always followed the philosophy that weapons are just one thing that you really can't make better than the 3rd party manufacturers out there (modding is a different subject).

Anyway, the gun is made from scratch, with no 3rd party pieces or scraps used at all, just a little bit of styrene sheet, a little plastic tube I found somewhere and a cable tie/zip tie, oh and a tiny little poly clay rod for the barrel.

The gun looks ok in the flesh, but it really doesn't photo very well under a macro lens, maybe Detroitika will have smoother results, using different materials ; )

If nothing else, I hope it gives people ideas about the possibilities you have with just some plastic and bits and bobs that you find lying around the house ; )

09015 hauls a rake of TEA tanks wagons up the incline to the siding behind Barry Depot on 26th June 1995. Kodachrome 64 Slide Scan (35mm)

I'm not sure why I'm going down the path of making really small, detailed diorama items, but here is the latest piece from that journey: a studio spot light with a tripod.

It's all basic material... aluminum, brass and plastic tubing, styrene plastic strips, jewelry making pieces and found objects.

All done with an x-acto knife and tiny drill bits.

Oddly enough, the most time consuming part was creating the Y configuration for the tripod base.

Now lets see... how about a movie camera crane and a mic boom?

Sounds good to me!

For some strange reason, I am fascinated by Hi-Rail Inspection Vehicles, and this 1920s version is no exception. By chance, I came across a number of early Ford trucks and cars that were retrofitted with train wheels, used by railroad companies for various jobs. What was really interesting was how cobbled together they actually were. It seemed what ever the local shops could piece together was acceptable. Hey, if it works, it's a good thing.

So, after that long winded introduction, here is my version. The chassis, engine, and part of the fender unit was taken from an AMT model kit for the basis of the vehicle. The rest is handmade from styrene sheets. There will be a box unit attached to the flatbed, along with railroad wheels to the axles.

As I always say; if we had a time machine and visited the past, we would find it far more eclectic and diverse than we can imagine.

Here is the completed vehicle:

Was asked to make Hit Girl from Kick Ass 2 for a commission.

Happy with this, especially the hair, throwing knives and the bladed staff.

Hope you like ; )

Here is a close up of some of the items that were in the Cleaning out the Revere Building photo.

They are all handmade with just enough detail to look accurate when photographed.

The materials used were Basswood, aluminum tubing, Sintra [ a flexible plastic that can be cut, sanded and painted ]

and of course the ever popular Styrene plastic.

The rugs and linoleum are xerox color copies taken from old catalogs.

Nothing fancy here, but it works!

This is excess extruded Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) from a LEGO factory. The ABS pellets were heated in preparation for injection molding, but the liquid plastic was ejected from the machine before it could be injected into the mold. This is common when troubleshooting molds, and the waste plastic is typically discarded or sent for recycling at another company. Despite its fluid look, this ABS has cooled to about the typical hardness that you'd expect from LEGO bricks.

ultraviolet bard... styrene signs have a very limited halflife out by the boat ramp.

My wife has been missing her Nikon D5000 and 35/1,8 AFS lens.

Last week, this badboy showed up to replace her 'fatty'. And it's pretty nice. Though I have a number of complaints about its design and size.

Taken with the Sony a7r and Nikkor PC Mikro 85/2,8 ED lens.

Strobist: two bare flashes into styrene board to either side, one soft box above. All at perpendicular angles.

Explore: thanks for the votes or however it is calculated. I have no idea. The photo received no major touchups so I'm quite surprised that a product photograph like this, bared as it is with no fixes became popular- that and it is a still life technology shot. Happy I am but surprised.
