Resilient seafront in Georgetown / Un front de mer résilient à Georgetown

The city of Georgetown is located in the north of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is home to a large fishing community and many resilient people, who recently faced tragic destruction due to the volcanic eruption in April 2021. This lively town filled with schools, homes, a distillery, and many bars, is juxtaposed with a relaxing location provided by the crashing waves against a black sandy backdrop.
The sea wall is a relief for many of the townsfolk. It protects the community that has been subjected to many floods, especially during the hurricane season. The coastal defence project, completed in 2021, not only protects against severe wave action affecting infrastructure, but also protects many as the sea - despite its beautiful nature - has claimed many souls.
The ‘X Blocks’ seen here interlock to absorb wave energy and action, while the 8-foot wall further prevents the waves from causing damage to property. Additionally, wastewater from the nearby distillery is channeled through a constructed drain. This further prevents any flooding. A footpath and benches were placed for people to relax, keeping the culture of a town that comes together for fishing festivals or everyday hanging out.

La ville de Georgetown est située au nord de Saint-Vincent-et-les-Grenadines. Elle abrite une importante communauté de pêcheurs et de nombreuses personnes résilientes qui ont récemment fait face à une catastrophe de l'éruption volcanique d'avril 2021. Cette ville animée remplie d'écoles, de maisons, d'une distillerie et de nombreux bars, se trouve être aussi un lieu de détente grâce aux vagues qui se déferlent sur un fond de sable noir.
La digue représente un soulagement pour de nombreux habitants de la ville. Elle protège la communauté qui a subi de nombreuses inondations, notamment pendant la saison des ouragans. Le projet de défense côtière, achevé en 2021, protège non seulement les infrastructures contre la force des vagues, mais aussi de nombreux habitants, car la mer, malgré sa beauté, a fait de nombreuses victimes.
Les "X Blocks" que l'on voit ici s'emboîtent pour absorber l'énergie et l'action des vagues, tandis que le mur de 2,5 mètres empêche les vagues de causer des dommages aux propriétés. De plus, les eaux usées de la distillerie voisine sont canalisées par une canalisation construite à cet effet. Cela permet d'éviter toute inondation. Un sentier et des bancs ont été installés pour que les gens puissent se détendre, conservant la culture d'une ville qui se réunit pour des festivals de pêche ou pour se retrouver au quotidien.

Milton Cato Hospital offers a wide range of services including surgeries, lab tests, radiology, dental, ophthalmology, maternity, and geriatrics. It is equipped with three operating theaters, but it is by no means a state-of-the-art facility. On the right is Mr. Emmanuel Jones, who is a trained nurse and pharmacy technician. He now manages the inventory system at the Central Stores.
Direct Relief’s relationship with St. Vincent and the Grenadines is as the primary source of medical donations. The donations have literally saved lives and also enabled them to use their budget for drugs for chronic conditions--diabetes and hypertension are widespread here.

Flood-hit Caribbean island moves to battle the deluge and cut losses

A shipment of medical supplies is received at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. Mr. Emmanuel Jones is a trained nurse and pharmacy technician who now manages the inventory system at the Central Stores.
Respiratory disease is prevalent in St. Vincent and has been on the rise in the last decade. Asthma-related incidents account for at least 2,500 emergency room visits per year; forty-five percent of these patients are children.
Direct Relief has provided medicines and medical supplies to St. Vincent and the Grenadines , focusing on basic medical supplies and respiratory health.
Direct Relief's partner in-country is the Asthma Clinic of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which operates in a wing of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in the capital city of Kingston. Although the number of asthma cases in has risen fourfold in the past decade, the government is only able to provide only half of the funding for the supplies needed.
