A glimpse into the past tonight. The Plantation House Hotel held one of the best positions in the bay, right at the end of the walkway in Admiralty Bay and provided a taste of luxury with beach front bar and restaurant and garden cabana rooms.
Nowadays, its been left to ruin, with many of the cabanas being used by the locals and the jetty used by everyone to sit and watch the sunset.
A shame to see it go. I have many happt memories here of the Music Festival blasting out across the bay and an announcement coming over the PA that my yacht had slipped its moorings and was floating across the bay! Happy times.

This shot was taken from the balcony of the home of my friend Charles; what a view he wakes up to everyday!
This is a strange house built into the cliff on one of the islands near Bequia. It is abandoned now. The beginning of the rail for the grand staircase is actually a whale rib

Over the last 48 hours the sea has been surging wildly, crashing into anything it can find. If you walk along the Belmont Walkway in the main harbour, Admiralty Bay, at the moment, you take your life in your hands ... and camera equipment too, as the water crashes and splashes over your heads.
Down at Lower Bay, which is the most exposed of the bays here to this type of swell, the water has been washing the beach, completely clear of any human existence.... no footprints in the sand here at the mo. There was evidence this morning of the sea actually clearing the beach head and running out into the roads behind, which we all hope will stop asap as many local live near here.
To try and control the white water surging up and down the beach, I hid under one of the Almond Trees that line the beach, not only for shade, but as the shadow pattern provided a break from the white, white, white, of the surge.
The job today was to slow everything down. The Big Stopper was too strong, so I used a selection of filters and the ISO to achieve the 0.6 secs shutter I was after. The soft grad filter was useful today to take the edge of the bright water as it ran up the beach. Not ideal due to the hills in the background, but worked better than the hard.

The words of the classic song by Otis Redding come to mind ...
"I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time"
He wrote this wondferful song and recorded it 3 days before he died in a plane crash. The lesson is to enjoy every minute and enjoy all those amazing sunsets ..... from the end of the dock if you can.

After a day and a half of travelling, this was beautiful. Followed by hard-boiled eggs and more hospitality, including a beautiful view of the ocean. At the Tranquility Hotel in St. Vincent.
Last week I was invited to join some friends for dinner who have recently finished renovating an amazing house overlooking the whole of Admiralty Bay, Bequia.
As we sipped our pre-dinner rum punches, we were not only in awe of the view, but thanks to some high clouds, we had a beautiful and very subtle sunset right across the bay.
If you're thinking of coming, Ravenala House is amazing. Perched on the hillside up above Lower Bay, under Mount Peggy (the highest point on the island), it looks out across the bay with stunning views.
You may need a 4x4 to get there up the track that leads to the house, but its worth it. Stunning!
