Throughout his career, Demand has been interested in our culture's production of "nature." In the end many of Demand's images ask, in a world so fully suffused with artifice, "what is the natural?" In Grotto (2006), for example, Demand famously attempted to ask this question by calling our attention to the legacy of the aesthetic theory of the Sublime in nature in relation to the power of photography to form (or deform) experience and personal memory. To produce this image Demand used thirty-six tons of cardboard to construct a life-size underground cavern before preserving its image photographically.
Like the stalagmites and stalactites it depicts, which have been built up geologically over millennia out of the mineral content of dripping water, Demand constructed this work out of layer after layer of card-board. The image it re-creates is one that we might have seen many times before in the thousands of postcard images of caves sold in gift shops around the world. The artist gathered hundreds of these post-cards, and the final photographic version of Grotto becomes an ideal condensation of our collective image of a cave that has itself been mediated by the long history of photography.
In this work, the terrifying grandeur of the eighteenth-century philosophical Sublime becomes the Instagram generation's idea of a photo-op, and the spectacle of nature is reduced to a daily post. As if to accentuate the point that neither the Sublime nor the Instagram photo are any less constructed than one another, Demand allowed the model for this work to be preserved (just this one time, unlike all of his previous or subsequent models), and it currently sits on view in Milan in a basement gallery at the Prada Foundation along with vitrines full of his research.
Perhaps the sheer weight of its factual material existence and its case-study approach to the concatenations of memory and photography led Demand to allow for Grotto's continued physical existence alongside its photographic counterpart: a kind of memorial to the mutual imbri-cation of objects, memory, and the process of photography.
Many of the photos here were posted on my Instagram page shortly after they were taken. However it always has been my intent to also put them up here for several reasons.
There are any number of Flickr visitors who are not on Instagram or are unlikely to find my pages there. And photographs here are of much better quality, and not limited to 10 photos per post.
I have recently decided not to post new content on Instagram. While I don't intend to take down what is already there (at least as of now), I've become increasingly unhappy with the way it operates. Far too many advertisements and "You might be interested in" posts. Too many "private" members. Some members who have gone down the "AI photo composing" rabbit hole. Their right, but after a little while, their artwork becomes boringly repetitive. And Instagram's annoying ways of attempting you to get more "screen time" and see more of their ads. by posting entries out of chronological order, six day old photos you've seen too many times before new content you might enjoy.
The final straw there was that several of my Instagram entries were taken down for supposed "trademark infringement" I've been around photography intellectual property policy for a long time, and trademark infringement can only occur for commercial use, like advertising or selling a product. So, goodbye Instagram, to see my new photos, keep an eye out here.
I realize I'm way behind in posting here, this batch is a year and 1/2 old. But, I'll try to catch up soon. Thank you.
Another set of photos that never made it to Instagram. I think because it mixed landscape and portrait orientations, an Instagram no-no. I think the shoes were new to me back then. I see I eventually wore them again and posted some Instagram photos, but then they got stashed away in a storage bin, for no good reason.
These Nike Stutter Step 2 sneakers are becoming broken in as the uppers are torn from the soles in places, but the soles themselves need help, as they show almost no wear.
Having dug them out of storage now in late 2024, I'm going to wear them more often.
Senator Biden spoke about overcoming a severe stutter. He spoke about
overcoming the loss of his wife and daughter. He talked about the
values and honor his parents instilled in him. His mom was there
wiping away tears. He talked about the need for all of us to fight
this fight for the middle class, the soldiers, the veterens and the
rest of us. He was inspiring and you just know he is up to the battle
yet to come. He was the right pick! Oh and he accepted our
nomination! In the end Senator Obama came out and joined him on
stage. It was pretty incredible to have Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea
Clinton .. All the Biden family and the Obama family in the same
place. It was a great show of unity. And did you see Senator Biden's
tiny grandson holding his hand? All in all it was pretty amazing.
Stuttering
Cold and damp
Steal the warm wind
Tired friend
Times are gone
For honest men
And sometimes
Far too long
For snakes
In my shoes
A-walking sleep
And my youth
I pray to keep
Heaven send, Hell away
No one sings
Like you anymore
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Soundgarden: Black Hole Sun
I kind of cheated for todays song. The last 24 hours have been a total disaster in my world and I just didn't have it in me to do Magical Mystery Tour. So, here is a shot I took with my iPhone on my drive home (totally SOOP--straight out of the camera!). I was trying to get the funky cloud formations but ended up with this.
I hope everyone has a better Friday than I am having!

In June 2024 we heard from Maya Chupkov,
Podcaster, Documentary maker and Stuttering Advocate.
Maya is the founder and executive director of award-winning Proud Stutter, a podcast and nonprofit organization that is changing the conversation about stuttering through storytelling and advocacy. She shared parts of her journey with our audience, and how it inspired her to create her podcast as well as a documentary short, ROCK OF HOPE, that intersects stuttering, bullying, incarceration, and rebirth.

The old movie reel stuttered into life after being hidden in the dusty attic for decades. Such happy memories they hurt the heart and make one gasp with the pain. The once familiar Skyline stood out sharply against the dawn sky... remember how we would squint at the gathering clouds behind the house and pretend they were snow-covered peaks ?? How we were too eager to escape. And only now are we so desperately eager to return.
