France: French Civilization in Paris
This is a picture of the top portion of one of the few remaining art-deco elevators left at the Galeries Lafayette, the largest and oldest department store in Paris. I like this picture because: a) I like the art deco look; and b) the numbers just struck me as completely French and maybe even illuminates some of the basic differences between us and them. Notice that the floor numbers have no confounding letters like ‘M’ or ‘G’ (which always confuses me when I’m in Atkins). No, the ground floor is 0 (not 1 like we insist on calling it) and if you want to go to a still lower floor then you will be going into negative territory (-1). For all the hype about the French only being interested in looking good, sometimes they can be downright pragmatic. Conversely, for all our supposed practicality, we Americans can needlessly complicate things.
