Video stills from the early study models (often called "white models" because they are simple black-and-white elevations mounted on white foamcore board) for MEN IN BLACK: ALIEN ATTACK at Universal Orlando.

These were built by the Universal Creative model shop at the studios in California. The larger one shown is often called a "head-scale" model, so the design team could walk underneath the model and put their head exactly where the ride vehicles would be, to identify sight-lines and guest focus early in design.

Keep in mind that these set designs were very early in the project, and many many changes were made before final installation. Based on concept-level schematic set elevation sketches, these models are used to communicate broad creative design, form & function, and architectural & infrastructure needs. These models then lead to much more detailed drawings as the project moves into design development and production.

In Z33 BUILDS study models and pictures of our new house for the arts designed by the Italian architect Francesca Torzo will be presented.

In 2012 the design team of the Italian architect Francesca Torzo won the international architectural competition for the renovation and extension of the exhibition building of Z33.

The architect from Genoa designed for the extension of Vleugel '58 a sober and intimate building that will fit effortlessly in the historical fabric of the surroundings and the city. The architecture – unpretentious and poetic – connects seamlessly with the stately exhibition building from 1958.

The construction will start in the summer of 2016 to be completed by the end of 2017.

A month ago, my Little Red Rocket (as I liked to call it, even though everyone else insists it's orange) finally sustained an injury from which it could not recover. It's in the fuzzy part of this picture; the short version is that where the pedaling apparatus would normally screw into the frame, a large screw sheared in half while still screwed in. Two different bike shops and a Schwinn heiress who doubles as an engineer and machinist informed me with candor that whatever effort would be required to repair this would rack up a price well beyond the value of the bike, even taking into account sentimental value. Both blowtorches and welds would be involved to "maybe" be able to fix it, and really all this is a sign we've passed beyond the natural lifespan of this bike. Ever since the welding job last summer I've been riding on borrowed time - so despite a couple of bummed-out days I came to terms with it.

The remains of the Rocket still reside in the back-alley of 3+ Studio, that famous no-man's-land between us and the Landscape grads. The stalemate over this territory was broken by John McMorrough's insistence that we not throw out the enormous and awkward site model bases from last quarter. There was nowhere to put them besides the "Neutral Zone" (free of Romulans), so it's ours by default, although (thanks to the bulky bases) precious little of it can actually be used for anything productive. Long story short: it's completely filled up with garbage. Paint cans, newspaper, study models, things pinned up but now pulled down....and a lonesome bicycle, increasingly decrepit as it becomes scavenged for modelmaking purposes. My Confine model could never have been realized without the inner tubes from this beautiful machine, so in that totemic form it will always survive. For over four years now that bike has been my one constant companion; it was a good bike.

The epilogue: I have a new bike now, and it's beautiful. Photos forthcoming.

Conceived as a 3m-tall sculpture, R's monument to Honoré de Balzac took more than 6yrs to be completed; B's large and awkward physical presence made him a difficult subject to capture. Seeking to create a simultaneously naturalistic and spiritual likeness, R modeled more than 50 studies of heads, nudes, and draped figures in various sizes and forms, using wax, clay, and plaster to push the composition to a more abstract form. The present example is R's final study, modeled in 1897 adn cast for R before 1901.

Architecture students work all semester to show their final design projects which are critiqued by faculty, students, and outside professionals.

This is a final review from Core III, which is the 3rd out of 5 core studios you will take as an architecture student. You can either work towards a Bachelors of Science in Architecture or a dual degree Bachelors of Science in Architecture/Masters of Architecture. I was in the latter program and I finished in 5 years (of course I took classes during every winter intersession and every summer since my sophomore year.)

Studio Curriculum for the Masters program is as follows...

5 Core Studios: Core I, II, III, VI, V

3 Advanced Studios: They let you choose which professor's project you want to participate in.

1 Comprehensive Studio: ARCH 513

1 Graduate Level Studio: ARCH 515

Thesis: Your own project in which you do all the research, site analysis, programming, etc. yourself.

Grand Total: 11 Studios
