Architectural models - materials

Rough study models can be made quickly using cardboard, wooden blocks, polystyrene, foam, foam boards and other materials. Such models are an efficient design tool for three-dimensional understanding of a structure, space or form, used by architects, interior designers and exhibit designers.

Common materials used for centuries in architectural model building were card stock, balsa wood, basswood and other woods. Modern professional architectural model builders are taking advantage of twenty-first century materials, such as Taskboard (a flexible and lightweight wood/fiber board), plastics, wooden and wooden-plastic composites, foams, foam board and urethane compounds.

A number of companies produce ready-made pieces for structural components (e.g. girders, beams), siding, furniture, figures (people), vehicles, trees, bushes and other features which are found in the models. Features such as vehicles, people figurines, trees, street lights and others are called "scenery elements" and serve not only to beautify the model, but also to help the observer to obtain a correct feel of scale and proportions represented by the model.

Increasingly, rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and CNC routing are used to automatically construct models straight from CAD plans.

"Useful new instrument

An instrument that Architecture students will make good use of in their building design work has been completed by two staff members in the Department of Architecture.

The large instrument, know as an urbanscope, is able to study in unprecedented detail and perspective the three dimensional.

In the making the instrument, the staff members turned second hand materials and parts to good account and thus achieved considerable cost saving.

The urbanscope has a miniature periscope attached to a video camera. The periscope scans the building model and films true perspective views, which are shown on a TV monitor.

The designers have achieved simplicity of operation by means of computer control. Progress of filming is controlled by fixing coordinates and digitising them.

The prime purpose of the urbanscope is to study models of student building projects. However, members of the local architectural fraternity are also interesting in using it.

The usefulness of the urbanscope has been extended by the inclusion of a video cassette recorder. If students and plasticising architects see advantage in having films of their building projects they can tape them, study them and even show them to clients.

Building models are fragile and deteriorate quickly, in particular if they are moved about. The Department of Architecture has also overcome this problem by using video film.

According to Mr. Peter Thomas, Senior Technical Officer, and Mr, Jeffrey Richards, Laboratory Craftsman, who jointly built the urbanscope, similar inst-ruments are usually imported and are very expensive. Encouraged by Assoc. Professor Ross Deamer, who was Head of Department at the time, they started fabricating the instrument about 18 months ago.

“We machined our own bearing assemblies, the drive mechanism and the pulley block, and improvised many other parts, using stock or cheap materials.” Messrs. Thomas and Richards said.

Professor Deamer said that the Department of Architecture had need of a tool which enabled students to study the impact of the forms they developed in their design work. Previously, the principals of the urbanscope had been applied to models dealing with spaces. Now the methods could be applied to all kinds of urban spaces."

Lake Point Tower is a high-rise residential building located on a promontory of the Lake Michigan lakefront in downtown Chicago, Illinois, just north of the Chicago River. It rises somewhat apart from the urban cluster of downtown Chicago in a composition that sets off and punctuates the skyline. The building is also the only skyscraper east of Lake Shore Drive.

The designers were John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, designing under the firm name of Schipporeit and Heinrich, who were students of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It was completed in 1968, is over 600 feet tall, and was the highest apartment building in the world at that time. It is known for its unusual and graceful form and subtle color, perhaps bronze, perhaps olive green, which reflects light in sometimes brilliant, sometimes soft, and always eye-catching ways.

'The building's plan is composed of three equal prongs extending from a central core, and alights atop a masonry podium. The exteriors of the prongs are gently curved, giving the exterior of the building a rich, gleaming form. It is often described as having been inspired by a study model of a curvilinear high-rise building made by van der Rohe during the early phase of his career, but is much taller than that proposed building, more regular in form, and its exterior glass curtainwall is tinted. The reputations of the architects of the building are associated almost entirely with this magnificent structure.

In 2007, Lake Point Tower was ranked #73 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

Video stills from the early study models (often called "white models" because they are simple black-and-white elevations mounted on white foamcore board) for MEN IN BLACK: ALIEN ATTACK at Universal Orlando.

These were built by the Universal Creative model shop at the studios in California. The larger one shown is often called a "head-scale" model, so the design team could walk underneath the model and put their head exactly where the ride vehicles would be, to identify sight-lines and guest focus early in design.

Keep in mind that these set designs were very early in the project, and many many changes were made before final installation. Based on concept-level schematic set elevation sketches, these models are used to communicate broad creative design, form & function, and architectural & infrastructure needs. These models then lead to much more detailed drawings as the project moves into design development and production.
