Western Classical Studies students on site at Vindolanda, in Northumberland, England where they will participate in a five-week archaeological dig. Over the course of their stay, students will participate in daily excavations on the site of Vindolanda, a military fort and settlement on the Roman frontier in Britain. The Field School group will also take weekly field trips to explore the landscape around Hadrian's Wall and the north of Britain, in order to gain a broad perspective on a frontier and imperial landscape that thrived on the edge of the Roman Empire. A welcome reception for 2012/13 Chevening Scholars was held at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on 5 November 2012.
The event took place in the Locarno Suite where the Scholars were welcomed by the Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who wished them all the best on their Chevening journey.
Lunch was followed by a thematic networking session in which Scholars were encouraged to meet fellow Scholars studying similar subjects at different universities across the UK.
Approximately 150 Scholars attended the event.

This was a girl who is presently studing Animal Science at Uni. Her Mum wanted a cow, pig, horse, mouse, rat and a sheep laying on its back. Yes there is a story behind it.
We stood together in front of this paining for a good five minutes. She had all sorts of ideas and thoughts about it. "She looks mad." "What's that behind him?"
