The building known as 'The Study', stands in a picturesque corner of the town beside the Market Cross. On plan it is L-shaped and consists of a main block of two storeys and attics, with crow-stepped gables, while a stair-wing projecting from the southern wall, in alignment with the west gable, is carried up a storey higher and has a crow-stepped gabled roof free from the main roof.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Foto museum, Chris Killip exhibition (uncut)

Christopher David Killip (1946 – 2020) was a Manx documentary photographer who also worked at Harvard University from 1991 to 2017, as a Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies.

He was influenced by HCB (Henry Cartier Bresson) and is known for his dramatic black-and-white images of people and (post-) industrial places, especially of Tyneside during the 80s, the austere Thatcherian era - the dark times of economic recession, mass unemployment, miner strikes and other civil unrest.

The 80s were also the years of new wave music. Some of Killip’s images made me remember the cover of the pivotal ’ Searching for the Young Soul Rebels’ album (Dexy’s Midnight Runners). They also evocated Elvis Costello's (Declan McManus) Oliver Army’s lyrics in which he states that the only future for ‘the boys of the Mersey, the Thames and the Tyne’ lies in joining the (mercenary) army.

I dunno if Killip ever photographed in Northern Ireland, but throughout the visit, I had the nasal/hoarse, kinda snarly voice of Feargal Sharkey of the Undertones playing in my head. Check out The Undertones - When Saturday Comes.

Shot on an enjoyable and informative museum visit with Hendrik van Leeuwen.

This is number 305 of the Museum album.

The Old Malt House, Markyate, Hertfordshire. Before the coming of the railway, the village was an important stop for everybody travelling between London and the Midlands. There were hotels and dozens of pubs and brew houses (such as this one). What is left today are three pubs and their survival is not guaranteed.

I brought this guitar for $150 in a second hand instrument shop in Melbourne in 2001. I then carried it all around Australia, New Zealand, back to the UK, here and there. Always in a soft case. It has stood up to it well. It is not a well known brand, but I love the sound and the playability of it. Currently, it is on hand for my study breaks...

Late February in the sunshine. Hazel tree flowers; the male catkin and the smaller female ‘bud-like’ flower. Also on the same twig, the leaf bud.

Seen at The Knapp & Papermil, a Worcestershire Wildlife Trust reserve.

It has been rather mild lately considering that it is still winter and so Tofu has spent more time outside again. Yesterday he followed me when I went out do to some garden work. The garden is a mess at the moment but that doesn't bother Tofu as long as his feathered friends are around.

Treating a flower like a person means to take a portrait shot. This image was created by shooting through a frame (lead in this case) and by using five LED spotlights in various positions. I had to go indoors as there is currently too much wind outside. Processed in Fujifilm's raw converter and macOS High Sierra photo editor.
