Leon Camier, currently thrashing all comers at the British Superbikes Championship, offered me his studded tongue when posing for this portrait.

Melanie Muir style studs

Hanging by our front door, ready to be grabbed for dogs walks or training.

August STUD quilt received from Peg (quiltinlady21). Love the tiny pieced border.

I love them. When I was in highschool I wore belts with rows and rows of studs until my dad banned them because they stratched up the kitchen chairs. No joke.

The current look. Running in the studs on the Schwalbe Winter Tires. Always no fun riding with low pressure on asphalt for 14 miles. But you only have to do it once.

This is a personal favourite of myself. I am my favourite subject.

The line conversion technique was at one stage among one of the most popular techniques used in the media. The reproduction of half tone images in newspapers and magazines had been a nightmare for publishers. They realised the easiest way to get satisfactory reproduction from small photographs was to reduce the photograph to line and make a ‘line block’, many feel that this technique had been exploited by the media, as careful thought needs to be given to what images should be exposed to this form of manipulation.

Images that ‘as a rule of thumb’ that are suitable for this technique should have strong lighting and harsh shadows, the most famous example of course being the photograph of Che Guevara, in his black beret, the high cheekbones and the deep sunken in eyes with their shadows.

The question you must ask when selecting an image for manipulation is:

“If the middle greys are lost will the photograph still read?”

A small amount of midtones can be kept to lent to maintaining the subject matter form, and sometimes special care is needed to bring these out in developing.

The technique I referenced from based the experiment using medium format elements so to apply this to 35 mm I needed to adjust the procedure to take into account smaller neg among other elements

Studio SetUp

I experimented between different lighting set ups to get the shadow/highlight blow out I was looking for, by angling the flashes and varying their power and zoom, settling for zooming at 105mm and using ¼ power, on the right side flash ttl, and the same on the left flash head, and having the Vivitar and full power, handheld by assistant under subject pointing almost directly under chin to try eliminate some shadows under models neck. I also tried 3 stop ND filter over the manual flash to reduce power to little effect. I had a D200 attached via usb to a Macbook Pro running Nikon Camera control Pro 2, this allowed me to control the settings from the computer and adjust them quickly and view the files on a clear screen to be able to decide what changes to be made, I bracketed multiple shots with each lighting set up, making references of ones that worked, and then replicated the settings using my film camera taking into account the 1 stop variation as a result of the film’s 50iso and the digitals limit to 100 iso, also the crop factor of the lens on the film body. I used 50iso film as i wanted to keep the image as contrasty as possible before darkroom manipulation as adjustments in there for the results i need would degrade image quality, and due to flash set up, shutter speed could go lower than if i was shooting ambient light. Also due to the need to push the film in the darkroom, I wanted to keep grain to a minimum so I picked 50 as that would have least to start out with so when pushed, hopefully grain would be acceptably light.
