The Silver-studded blues were pairing all over the heath this morning. These ones actually pared up beside me while I was waiting for the Yellowhammer

On a morning trip to Yateley Common I found this female Silver-studded Blue in some lovely long, wet grass. I had to sit and get soaked for a while however it was worth it. Shooting into the the grass and moisture give some magical effects.

We welcome our new male elk to the herd. He's been on exhibit for a while but I always found him far away until now.

Beautiful 10 point rack.

Last Tuesday evening I went a few hours searching for this beauty, the Silver-studded Blue.

It was a difficult task, with the wind and hyperactive butterflies.

But I managed to capture them, this is one of the pics I made.

Handheld shot.

I'm thinking of hiring my self out as a cardboard cut out. This is what happens when there is no one behind the lens saying "loosen up dude!"

I seem to be on a nature streak these days, inspired by the Style it Up contest. This week's prompt was to build something with no visible studs. So, naturally, I build a stud mustang rearing back in the American West.

It's also an entry to the Iron Forge, with minifigure legs in the tiny cacti/bush things.

"This damn Studebaker keeps on breaking down again

I was speedin' south on 99

When the manifold started smokin'

I ran her off the shoulder

And now the axle's broken

Made a sound that cracked my heart in half..."

These old trucks are so much cooler than the ones they make today. I would so drive this truck ...but sadly... this one's not going anywhere. Studebaker... even the name is cool! ; )

I vaguely remember my Dad having a Studebaker when I was a kid. Yeah... I need a truck. I do (in light turquoise blue! I think I just started writing a country song.... lol!)

Species: Plebejus argus.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

We descended into the Upper Bohinj valley and now only the scenic descent to the big lake is ahead of us.

Its that time of year again, Silver Studded Blues doing what they are meant to do.

A tiny silver-studded blue. We are very lucky to have some colonies of these delightful butterflies in the New Forest as this butterfly is almost totally absent from central and northern England, Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

I'm currently doing a six week survey for Butterfly Conservation in the Ashdown Forest. This involves monitoring the same patch on a 6km loop once a week to see how many, if any silver studded blue butterflies there are. Last year was good but I'm into week three now and have seen just two males. They were very fresh (they live as adults only 4 to 5 days) and are very beautiful. I'm hoping that as the weather warms up there will be more.

They were once common but in the last century over four fifths of their numbers disappeared and they are now confined to a few pockets in the South of England. They have a fascinating life cycle in which the caterpillars are taken into ants nests for protection and the chrysalises are guarded and tended, with the ants in attendance until the adult emerges and is able to fly off. The ant gets sugary secretions from the caterpillars as a reward. Without the ants, there is no silver studded blue. Other blues also have this life cycle.

Here are pictures of the two I saw on Sunday.

As usual, there's a bit more detail viewed large.

'A LITTLE TIME OUT.'

Another of the c30 males present at Lindrick Common. Although mostly on the wing, they did land on Bird's Foot Trefoil to nectar and occasionally perched lower down in the grasses to rest.

On the subject of Studio Ghibli they have a new film that just came out in Japan called Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (崖の上のポニョ. The theme song to that movie was everywhere and a few weeks later is still stuck in my head. When ever I am idle I start singing in my head Ponyo Ponyo Ponyo sakana no ko! " Because I know you want to suffer with me. Please feel free to click here. =D
