Chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-magnetite from the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada. (~3.5 centimeters across along the base)
Dull brassy & brownish-brassy area at center to lower right = pyrrhotite
Tarnished brassy gold along the perimeter = chalcopyrite
This massive sulfide sample is from Ontario's Sudbury Mining District, which is famous for its economically-significant nickel- and copper-bearing minerals. The Sudbury area is actually a tectonically deformed, very large impact structure - it is the # 3 largest preserved impact structure on Earth (the # 1 largest is Vredefort in South Africa; the # 2 largest is Chicxulub in Yucatan, Mexico). The Sudbury Impact occurred about 1.85 billion years ago, during the late Paleoproterozoic. The Sudbury Impact Structure is no longer circular or subcircular in shape - it's been compessed into a stretched-egg shape from an ancient continental collision event.
The dominant mineral in this specimen is chalcopyrite - CuFeS2 (copper iron sulfide). Also present are pyrrhotite - Fe(1-x)S (imperfect iron monosulfide) and magnetite - Fe3O4 (iron oxide), both of which will stick to a magnet.
Mineralization age: syn-impact or early post-impact, late Paleoproterozoic, 1.85 Ga

An old, abandoned beer factory in Budapest

Belém Tower (in Portuguese Torre de Belém) or the Tower of St Vincent is a fortified tower located in the Belém district of Lisbon, Portugal. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be both part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and the 30 meter, four story tower. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.
The grey painted structure underneath the platform is a temporary structure provided for the float out procedure to the jacket. This structure carried the platform whilst it sits on the transport barge out to sea.
This structure is one of our favorites. It was fabricated our in the field in the exact spot that it was placed. The top of the structure is designed to whistle when the wind blows.
A triangular structure, constructed by poured concrete, possibly part of the coastal defences of the World War Two era. There are three concrete pyramids with substantial plinths, these are tied together with concrete beams. Each concrete pyramid has a section of protruding steel, these appear to have supported an angle iron framework, which has been cut off at some point.
There is a third beam in the centre which appears to enter the ground, possibly to support cables, this may also extend to the small square bunker like construction behind (this has railings around the top, possibly a viewing platform) this may have been for a control room or generator providing the power supply.
The water's been long since drained, but this building was once surrounded by a pool with huge fountains.
A detail of the flexible deck structure that allows movement of the decking to accommodate the shifting sands of the dunes. However, the fabric structure and supports are fixed in their location.

This is the Philae Temple Complex, located on Agilkia Island, though it was originally located on Philae Island at Aswan in Upper Egypt. Constructed between 380 and 362 BC under Nectanebo I of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, the primary temple structure of the complex was built to honor Isis, the mother goddess and most important female deity in the Ancient Egyptian religion. The temple also gained quite a few smaller temples dedicated to various deities, including Hathor, and it is believed that the site was the last active Ancient Egyptian religious site after all pagan religious practices were banned by the Roman Empire in the 4th Century AD, in favor of Christianity, with the last known Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic carving being found at the site, dating to the late 4th Century. In 537 AD, religious ceremonies were halted at the site by the local commander, and the structure then became the Church of St. Stephen, with many of the carved reliefs being vandalized and the stone columns and walls having carvings of crosses and other religious symbols being added, while the temple structure itself remained largely intact for over a millennia. The temple complex includes the Vestibule of Hadrian, a tall Roman-era structure, and several Ptolemaic-era column capitals that were never completed, and remain in an unfinished state. The temple attracted a lot of attention in the 19th Century due to its picturesque location, immaculate state of preservation, and lack of sediments or debris obscuring the structure. The darkest period in the structure’s history began in 1902, when the British government, which controlled Egypt at the time, constructed the Aswan Low Dam on the Nile River, with the water level behind the dam rising up over the base of the temple, damaging the structure. The dam was raised twice, further covering more of the structure and leading to yet more damage. When the Aswan High Dam was under construction in the 1960s, UNESCO stepped in and moved the temple to higher ground, rescuing it from its watery grave.
