The structure in the middle for those who may not know is called Marina Bay Sands: "one of the world's most challenging construction projects and certainly the most expensive stand-alone integrated resort property ever built"

A detail of the flexible deck structure that allows movement of the decking to accommodate the shifting sands of the dunes. However, the fabric structure and supports are fixed in their location.

The hotel I was staying in has some interesting bright color elements in it, yellow, pink and green. This structure caught my eye. Luckily there was a way to get up to have a look down on the structure.

The National Guard Armory in Mena, Arkansas was built 1930-1931 and underwent restoration in 2004. Designed by architect Derwood F. Kyle of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the structure was built by contractor Walter Vernon of Fort Smith, Arkansas; total cost for the site and the building was $24,000. Measuring 70' by 125', the armory was essentially an Art Deco structure; in addition it was planned to meet some community needs. Using local fieldstone building materials, the armory has a rough appearance, typical of masonry in the mountainous areas of Arkansas.

The rectangular building is mostly a large, single story structure on a concrete foundation; a smaller, 2-story office section, which constitutes the front facade projects slightly beyond the walls of the auditorium space. The roof is gambrel with asphalt shingling (unfortunately I neglected to capture the roofing style). The front facade is stone, brick and concrete with a central castellated parapet. There are four symmetrically placed paired windows, two pairs on either side of a slightly recessed entrance. Entry is through a double-leaf door, effectively surrounded by a brick arrangement in corbels that recede in stages from the wall. A narrow pair of windows is situated above the doorway. Above that is a sign in concrete reading "National Guard Armory". Flanking the center bay are two wide buttresses. The walls on each side of the entrance have wide buttresses on the corners and between each set of windows; separating the individual windows in the pairing is a narrow buttress. The sides of the armory have nine bays, again with projecting buttresses separating the window bays. About the only decorative element is the repeated diamond-shape motif on the front facade above each window and a row of three above the entrance. The National Guard Armory was added to the National Register of Historic Places June 5, 1991 with reference number 91000682. The nomination form is located at www.arkansaspreservation.com/National-Register-Listings/P...
