Barcelona, Spain.

Day five ... our last day there. A day of wandering.

The Torre de Gas Natural ...

The last building designed by Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT in Barcelona, this office tower—the headquarters of the national Catalan gas company—makes an impressive mark on the city’s skyline and faces the sea.

The building is usually called ‘The Gas Tower’ but, as with most Miralles projects, it has very little to do with prototypical, corporate aesthetics, or even what one would typically conceive of as a tower. Clad in different colored glass panels, the building confounds onlookers, as there’s no discernible main axis or single perspective from which to regard its geometry.

Call it “form follows urbanism”: the building stands at the crossroads between the modern Olympic Village and the traditional maritime neighborhood of La Barceloneta.

The result is something beyond a simple ‘tower’; the architecture relates no less than a new concept of space and the last (and one of the most celebrated) of Miralles’ masterworks.

May 2, 2021 - Hilton Tower under construction across North High Street from the Hilton Columbus Downtown. The orange building is the Greater Columbus Convention Center. I love the structural gymnastics of the concrete column how it it is splayed out over the Convention Center. The new 28 story hotel tower will have 460 guest rooms and between the two hotels it will be the largest hotel in the state of Ohio with nearly 1,000 rooms. Scheduled to open in 2022.

One from my trip to the Lake District, when we stopped in at Langdale quarry, an abandoned slate mine. This is called Cathedral Cave, and was blasted out of the hillside, with a single beam of rock remaining to hold the roof up. The place is very atmospheric, I wish I'd had more time to take photographs here.

The Postcard

A National Series postcard which was posted in Talgarth Breconshire on the 27th. July 1910 to an address in Glasbury-on-Wye.

A quick hand-wash prior to the photograph being taken wouldn't have gone amiss.

The card was in fact sent on the same day to the same woman as the next card in the photostream.

Jack Beers

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 27th. July 1910, Jack Beers was born into extreme poverty in a cold-water apartment in the Lower East Side of New York City. In his old age he was the star of the award-winning feature film documentary, "Holes in my Shoes", which chronicled his life from his birth to the age of 94.

Jack was known as "New York City's Strongest Boy".

He turned out to be a jack of all trades - a strongman, a self-taught structural engineer (working on most of NYC's iconic buildings), built Radio City Music Hall, indirectly shortened WW2 through an invention of his, put the spire on the Empire State Building, trained show boxers, and acted in over 200 films.

Jack died on the 14th. July 2009, having lived for 98 years, 11 months and 18 days, or, to put it another way, 36,148 days.

Now closed to traffic due to structural integrity concerns, had this 1st floor area been completed it would have been another level of shops. Now the beams holding it all up are splitting down their middles and cars are no longer allowed. Nor are photographers. Security asked me to leave shortly after. Politely I may add.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. Designed and Fabricated Structural Pipe Hangers with Megalug® Pipe Attachments.

These are carbon steel structural supports designed for 6", 10" and 12" ductile iron pipe. They are hot dip galvanized to protect against corrosion and will be used in conjunction with hydraulic snubbers. The hydraulic snubbers are used to protect against axial shock loading, as well as providing vertical weight support.

Each support utilizes a Megalug pipe attachment to eliminate the need for field welding. The Megalug® attachments are designed to "bite" into the sides of the pipe providing an attachment point for the flanges on the fabricated clamp.

The 6" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 3,770 pounds, while the 10" and 12" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 11,630 pounds. All of the supports are built for an overall height of 55-1/8" from the upper support steel to pipe centerline.
