For strobists: Canon 580EX on camera left. Triggered with a Canon ST-E2 infrared transmitter. Between the strobe and the model is a large self made translucent light panel (just out of the frame).

To make the background a bit more interesting I let light from the strobe spill past the left side of the panel. By experimenting a bit, I managed to create an interesting light pattern on the background.

After watching the truly inspirational Dean Collins DVD's, I decided to make my own 2x1 meter light panel out of PVC tubing. I bought the translucent fabric from my camera store.

As I'm nearing the last couple of shots of my 365 Days project, I'm looking back through the months of shooting I've done and noticing a few trends. I've gone through several creative themes (lots of moderately embarassing humor and jumping) and more than a handful of photographic techniques, and I'd have to say that the thing that jumps out to me the most about my work over the past year is how much my lighting has improved.

Ogalthorpe introduced me to www.strobist.com back in July, and I haven't looked at off-camera lighting the same since. The vast majority of my most popular photos are lit based off of information I read on Strobist.com or inspired by photos I've seen in the Strobist Flickr pool. I've invested more money in lighting gear in less than 6 months than I did on my first DSLR and complement of lenses in 3 years (not counting the D300 I bought recently). And I feel that the lighting knowledge I've gained in the last few months has done more for my photography than anything else I've read in books and on websites in the last 5 years.

I really can't say how great Strobist has been and will continue to be for me. Much thanks goes to David Hobby for starting the whole Strobist thang and giving all of us wannabe photogs a leg up on creating better light in our photos.

sorry i have not been around flickr much lately. i just have not found the time. i'm trying to come back!

many of you asked about how i do my lighting,

i used the 400mm lens, the camera is about 30 or 40 meters away from where i stood. yes, it's a long way to run each time i want to change settings! it's a good job the D3 has an interval timer so it can take as many photos as i want in a row.

Larissa asked how many photos do i take until i get one i am happy with. it's a good question!

because well, i take a lot! usually between 50 and 150. it usually takes me 10 or 20 photos to get the settings with balancing flash and ambient right. i am somewhat a perfectionist so i take a lot of photos so i can have a high chance to get one perfect shot out of the set.

so i used backlighting here. just one nikon sb900 on full power behind where i stood. a warm color gel was over the flash to give it the orange.

it's really that simple :)

the trick is balancing the ambient light with the flash power. i find the sb900 is not powerful enough to overcome daylight so i shot this very early morning before the sun came up. the light is slowly getting brighter so i have to get the shot before it gets too light. i would love to have a more powerful flash, but the sb900 is so portable.

i would love to hear any more questions!

and i hope this helps!

Thought I would give my try at the Platon look. I see a lot of other people mimicing it, so I gave it a shot. Quite frankly, I think it sucks (mine, not his).
