I searched and search and found a basic strobe kit for under $200. I shot a bunch of test shots tonight with VA and Natalie. It's a bit tough but I think I'll get it eventually.
My sister and cousin in the yard playing basketball and football. Used a Canon 580 ex II flash as 1/2 power with Canon battery pack for the basketball pictures with pocket wizards.

Strobist: LumoPro LP120 camera right in shoot thru umbrella, 1/4 power. Gridded LP120s left, slightly behind subject, 1/8 power. Gridded LP120 on white seamless, 1/4 power, flagged to prevent spill on model.
300 Watt Monolight strobe (FAN300) 45 degrees to left of camera, PC Synced using SB900. SB900 flash at 45 degrees bounce light. White muslin backdrop.

I used Nissin Di622 with a reflective/bounce umbrella triggered via PT 04
Wow.
Off-camera lighting is a hell of a challenge.
Setting white balance, shutter speed, flash power, flash zoom, aperture, iso, sync speeds, wah-wah...
This photo is completely blown out. BUT, I love it compared to all the other shots I took. Its hella contrasty, the fading of the blue, etc...
I've got a lot of playing around with all this, but now that I have my wireless triggers and diffuser umbrella... :)

This was acutally shot by my friend Matt Wood. We were working on flash technique one night and were playing with the strobe feature.
Unfortunatly, I look rather pyschotic in these pics!

Pitcher plant in a pitcher plant bog in East Texas.
I don't use my strobe setup much in the field - this was a learning experience. SB-24 at 1/2 power into a shoot through umbrella to the right of the camera. I went to the umbrella because the bare flash was causing even more severe specular highlights.
I'm not sure what I could have done to improve the lighting in the field. Perhaps move the umbrella further to the right?
Comments and suggestions for improvement concerning the lighting are welcome.
