May 27, 2011: To brighten up our backyard setup (both with light and ambiance), I added these lantern string lights.
"This home was designed using the Passive House energy standard as a design tool & was certified Earth Advantage Platinum, as well. By carefully taking advantage of the sun’s relationship to the site, sealing all the air & moisture leaks in the home & using an appropriately large amount of insulation we could reduce the heating & cooling needs by up to 90%. By paying close attention to the sun, the designers were able to bounce daylight deeper & more softly throughout the home. To accentuate this effect, LED built-ins at the windows help to simulate natural light when the sun isn’t shining.
Attention to this level of detail has created a warm & open feel throughout the home. Most of the time, even in Portland's grayish climate, you don't even need to turn the lights on because the daylighting is so well thought out. A nice side effect of building to this higher standard is that you end up w/ a superior built home w/ far less maintenance in the future.
In addition to the energy savings, the use of reclaimed and FSC certified materials gives this home a real Pacific Northwest personality & fits charmingly in with its neighbors while still being undeniably modern!"
Portland Modern Home Tour
Warm lights from street lamps and string lights illuminate buildings and the track of a roller coaster at dusk in an amusement park. The sky displays soft twilight hues, setting a magical evening atmosphere.
A large banner stretched right across the road in one of the many towns we passed on the route from Hanoi to Ha Long. This is one of the many such banners, which also appeared to have string lights on them, which were of course not lighted as it was day. These banners celebrate Communism- ah yes, we are in North Vietnam! I was surprised to learn later however that not all Vietnamese are happy with the restrictive Communist way of life. It's for this reason that safety and security issues aside, and the presence of Communist propaganda like this in the north, which was not so common in the South, I really could not find too much difference in day to day life between Hanoi and Saigon barring a little more Americanization in the south. But the Night Food Market in Saigon (album coming up later) could well have been a slice of the Hanoi old quarter from the north! (Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, Nov. 2016)
Week 43
The road trip to the party. I started this week off in Atlanta shooting a commercial for work. This was another one of those jobs that had us working on a beautiful golf course all day. There is something so amazing about these golf courses that I get to see. The scenery is so perfect that sometimes you almost can't believe your eyes. The job went well as usual and as soon as we wrapped we were back on the road heading home. We made it back on Wednesday night, just in time to help set up the office party for Friday. This was my first time going to one of these office parties due to me finally being of age. It was pretty amazing and I had a wonderful time though it is weird to watch a bunch of co-workers and people you have known your whole life to go completely crazy. On Saturday, the day after the party, I headed out with Eric, bought a new film camera, and shot some sunset scenes with him. Scott joined us later in the night and we ended up buying some pixie lights and tried to mimic the famous Instagram look that everyone likes to do. I think they turned out pretty cool!
I can't wait to see what this next week will bring!

Last weekend I came across the abandoned movie set for the remake of the 1984 classic "Footloose" which was filmed here in Bostwick a few days prior. The crews have moved on to Social Circle and beyond and likely have dismantled this set by now, but I really liked the ghostly and somewhat surreal feel it gave to the gin, with no one around. I wish at least the lights could stay!

The Instagram version the the illuminated section of street just below my hotel room- I'd posted the same picture a couple of pics earlier taken with my Nikon P900. When I'd landed at the hotel around 04:00 earlier that day, the illuminations had been switched off. They remained off throughout the day of course, naturally. I was hoping the bright light wouldn't flood my hotel room at night and disturb my sleep but it didn't mercifully. The lights were basically string lights put up in decorative fashion and were very low intensity.
