To many people, Music City is just about country music, but our town has a rich and diverse musical heritage that continues to grow. The Music City Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a dynamic atmosphere for student musicians in Middle Tennessee to explore a diverse repertoire for string orchestra. This past weekend, I had an opportunity to visit them during a rehersal and take pictures of each musician. To learn more about this fantastic organization, see their website:

My 1920s-1930s Weymann mandolute in its softshell case outside on a porch table. This is actually my favorite mando. The neck is so tiny I can do a lot of chords that are otherwise a stretch on other mandos. The body surrounds the upper neck, making it difficult to reach up to hit high notes. The bridge has settled because of inadequate bracing, so this baby might not be long for this world.

View of violin in mixed light, just for fun and for an idea I'm working on.

Guitar, Italy, possibly early 19th century

The elaborate decoration of this guitar consists of engraved ivory plaques on an ebony ground. The fingerboard is faced with tortoiseshell. It is strung with six single courses of strings.

Harpo-lyre, Mirecourt (France), ca. 1830

André Augustin Chevrier (active 1820-42)

This three-necked instrument features a central neck tuned like a conventional guitar (E-A-d-g-b-e), plus a neck on the left tuned chromatically (A-B-c-d-d-e) and one on the right tuned diatonically (c-d-e-f-g-a-b-c). The back and the sides are of figured walnut. Not all of the ormolu (mercury-gilded brass) mounts on the yoke are original.

Guitar, Mirecourt (France), ca. 1815

stamped Germain/A. Mirecourt

Essentially a lyre-guitar with abbreviated arms, this variant was fitted with a flat base so that it could stand as a table ornament. The back and sides are of figured mahogany; the top is spruce. Six single courses of strings.

I am currently hosting a traveling fiddle, and part of having it is taking it around your local area and playing it/sharing it.

Here is my newest video... bear with me, I've only been playing a year and get nervous playing in public, hahaha youtu.be/t-Zkd0eKF04

This seems like a standard combo in many of the forts and palaces - a veiled woman, a child and a man playing a traditional Rajasthani instrument. All three are equally involved in the singing though.

This is the 2nd guitar I've ever built. Although not perfect, it was better than the 1st one. Pictured is a steel string acoustic with ebony inlaid fingerboard, East Indian rosewood back/sides and spruce top. The inlay work was done with abalone and mother-of-pearl. I worked on and off on this one for a couple of years. Surprisingly the tone is pretty nice with balanced highs and deep lows. I better make more of these as I had to buy an awful lot of specialized tools for this project. I love to play fingerstyle guitar and find that I am stuck on music from the 60's like Crosby, Stills and;Nash, James Taylor, Youngbloods, Yardbirds, Beatles, Simon and;Garfunkle, Byrds, Ritchie Havens, America, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Eagles, Dylan and the like. Personally I love most all types of music from Jazz, New Age, Classical, Folk, Rock to Celtic and on. I do write original music on a keyboard synthesizer which is layered with multiple tracks on a multi-track digital recorder. I just do it for the fun only - a hobbyist you could say.

This is an event that I have been wanting to go to for YEARS. The past Friday, I finally got to go and it did NOT disappoint!!! The work is done by a man named Ralph Lee, who is an artist-in-residence at the cathedral (like Phillipe Petit was ....I probably spelled his name wrong) and the Mattawee River Theater Group. Fun fact: Ralph Lee was also the person who came up wit "Land Shark" on SNL.

The night starts with the showing of a silent movie, accompanied by someone playing their INCREDIBLE pipe organ. When the movie is over, the procession begins. We enjoyed this so much, we've decided we will likely be making this an annual Halloween tradition.
