ROMada is a great ensemble of Roma musicians from all over the world. Noemy has an unusual style and fits perfectly in this group of musicians led by (now Montréaler) Moldavian Sergiu Popa, with Hungary-Toronto (Debi Botos), Vancouver-Bucharest (Leche Carcel), Macedonia (Nizo Alimov & son). Noémy picked up cello at age 5, so she fits in any ensemble, but lately is collaborating with Syrian, Moroccan, Brazilian and gypsy music in addition to jazz. This performance was part of Ashkenaz, one of the best & largest Jewish music festivals in the world.

I felt a little nostalgic today and photographed my father's old violin. He's been gone for many years now but we have great memories of him making music with this violin.
Der Advent ist zwar gerade erst vorbei, aber der nächst kommt bestimmt; und wer will schon immer genau mit der Zeit gehen?

Advent may just be over, but the next one is sure to come; and who wants to always keep up with the times exactly?
A street busker in the fortified settlement of Kasbah Oudayas in Rabat, Morocco. When he performed, he would twirl his head so that the tassle at the end of his cap would spin around.
There is a little connection with the pic I posted yesterday as there are cowrie shells on his cap as well as on the musical instrument :-)

Hard to describe the music of 'Petunia & the Vipers’. It's country, it's western swing, jazzy, ballads; simply good time music that leaves smile on your face. The concert just flew by so very quickly. I did not know the band, but one of Toronto most talented musicians got involved and it became a show, which you should not miss. Trombone Charlotte was the Toronto addition. Petunia lured her on their next stop to New Orleans, LA, where her star got even more shine.
'Petunia and the Vipers' was at 'Horseshoe', a Toronto institution since 1947. The leader of the band is amazing guitarist, vocalist and jodelist Petunia (Ron), who ended up playing with 5 strings (or was it just 4?) on last few songs. With Trombone Charlotte on stage playing, singing and off stage dancing, Joseph Abbott on clarinet, sax and guitar, Paul Townsend on drums, Liam McIvor on Fender steel guitar plus the man with a hat, Aaron Harmonsen on bass.

In Montreal they have several jazz bands entertaining the crowds in the afternoon, before the stage acts starts. This year, Montreal based 'The Early Jazz Band' was one group I managed to see and really enjoyed. 'The Early Jazz' takes their repertoire from the New Orleans swing of the 1920s, 1930s-1940s. Pure fun. I seen them first time, but one of Toronto's saxophone/clarinet musician, who comes to Montreal every year same time as me, played with few of them in Toronto. Jean-Sébastien Leblanc - clarinet is their leader and Dominic Desjardins - banjo/vocals is core member of the group. Jonathan Gagné – drum and Mathieu Roberge – double bass performed on this day.

The only performance I have seen this year at Markham Jazz festival was from Robert Lee Group. The festival had to be mostly cancelled on Saturday, when torrential rain made outdoor performances impossible. Robert Lee Group was moved indoors, so I had a chance to hear the Gayageum musician Roa Lee. Roa began playing when she was 7 years old. Lee’s music can go from jazz to classical to traditional Korean. She tuned the instrument specifically for each song. Bassist Robert Lee played with Roa Lee, Jen Lo- piano, Alison Au- sax, Andrew McCarthy- drums, Jay Yoo- guitar and Jacqueline Teh vocals. Markham Jazz is one of mine top 5 favorite jazz festivals, so I was disappointed with the steady downpour which caused not just music cancellation, but also traffic nightmare and extensive flooding.

in the hush beneath a tunnel, he sits with his harp — a frame within the frame, shaped like a question, or an ear tuned to the city. light spills in like a flood from another world, where people pass without slowing. but here, in shadow, music rises. and for a brief moment, silence listens.
I always look forward to see Guy Belanger in Montreal. I first seen him as he was MC-ing after midnight program, introducing local and international talent. That program was unfortunately cut in subsequent years. There are not many well know blues musicians he did not shared the stage with (Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Big Mama Thornton, James Cotton and Dutch Mason). He started in 1974 in Quebec City with Bob Walsh, who became his lifelong friend and played in USA for few years. He likes playing on home turf and his closets are full of awards. He was introducing his new album this year.
Accompanying Belanger in Montreal were Rob MacDonald (guitars), Alec McElcheran,(bass) and Dan Legault (drums). He also introduced Ian James (vocals and guitar) for few songs.

This mosaic is devoted to the rebirthing of nature, here the emerging ferns. I love how they curl out of the ground in spirals, truly looking like the scroll of string instruments.

My mandolin which I bought some years ago in the Czech Republic. Not because I play a mandolin, but because I love looking at them. They're pretty...like all musical instruments.
