After my weekend wellness incident, another valuable doctor’s visit today with my strained ankle. And what heals the ailing soul and ligament better than the famous strawberries of Lajosmizse?
Each year, when the Hudson Bay freezes over, the polar bears spend as much time as they can out on the ice, hunting seals and storing up fat reserves for the summer. When the ice melts, the bears wait out the summer on land, where there is very little food for them to eat. As the planet warms, the polar bears have less time on the ice to fatten themselves up, and more time on land. This puts a strain on the population, and if the trend is not stopped, then we will see dramatic declines in the number of polar bears. Some scientists estimate that approximately 30% of the population will remain 50 years from now. The good news is that we still have time to do something to save these magnificent creatures...if we begin to act now....

This is a piece of .125 inch thick Lexan.
I shot it a three times to get a (failed) high speed picture of a pellet hitting Lexan.
But under crossed polarizing filters, it looks cool.
Going to have to try this with more of a goal of getting a good picture.
I had to spot repair the hell out of this picture.
All sorts of dust.

This man is in the last stages of preparing the kava for drinking. It's been cleaned, cut, ground and is now being passed repeatedly through a fine cloth (usually a woman's slip) to remove any particles.
The beauty of this mutant strain of the fungus Trichoderma reesei belies the organism’s potential for dismantling biomass. The study and characterization of the fungus—particularly its proficient production of biomass-degrading enzymes—are critical for the development of more efficient and economical methods for turning biomass into fuels and other products. Scientists from the University of Nebraska and the University of Maryland have been identifying and characterizing T. reesei’s enzyme secretion control pathways. The work has been conducted through a collaborative user project at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The project resulted from an EMSL-DOE Joint Genome Institute call for proposals and was funded by DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research.
Research team members: Bruce Arey of PNNL’s Energy and Environment Directorate, Scott Baker of PNNL’s Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, Steve Harris of the University of Nebraska, and Mark Marten of the University of Maryland.
