The main street of Dubrovnik's old city. Taken from the fortification wall the surrounds the old city. It's one of the most beautiful and interesting city I've visited. I would highly recommend you put this on your must visit list. Willie McElligott is having another trip there next year. Highly recommend it!

Orlando’s Column - At the eastern end of Placa (Stradun) street, under the City Bell Tower, on Luza square in front of the Church of St. Blaise, stands a stone column, deep carved in the form of an ancient knight. The knight carved in the column is Orlando. According legend in the 9th century Orlando and his fleet saved Dubrovnik from a 15 month long Saracen siege. To express their gratitude the grateful citizens erected this beautiful column in Orlando's honor. This is just a myth. The truth is that Orlando, or Roland how he is called throughout Europe, was used as a symbol of a city under protection of the Hungarian-Croatian King. At the time it was common for the distant cities of the Hanseatic League to erect similar stone statues symbolizing the alliance and protection with the Hungarian-Croatian kingdom.

Fishing boats and lifeboat tenders enter and exit the busy old port of Dubrovnik ferrying tourists in and out of the old town at the start of the 2017 holiday season. Terracotta rooftops occupy the foreground sloping down towards the Stradun.

Old Town is the easiest place to find in Dubrovnik, it represents Dubrovnik itself.Stradun represents the core of the Old Town. The word comes from Venetian "stradone" which means "big street". It is the center and any corner is the meeting place of locals and visitors. Walking down this big street, people who work in restaurants will offer you the menu every 20-30 meters, but don't get discouraged, you will eventually find a proper meal in one of numerous choices.

At the end of Stradun, street at the right leads to Gundulić Square where the market is. When there, you will observe the scene made of high statue of famous croatian poet Ivan Gundulić, under him the benches full of fruits, vegetables, dry figs, aromatic oils, home made cheese, liquers and various products with centuries old tradition. Behind the benches there are lovely characters, hosts to everybody who visits their market. A homey atmosphere indeed...

The Dubrovnik Bell Tower (Croatian: Gradski zvonik) is a tower in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Located on Luža Square at the end of the Stradun, the tower is 31 metres high.

Originally constructed in 1444, the tower suffered damage in the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake among other earthquakes and, having started to lean towards the Stradun in the early 19th century, it was demolished in 1928 and entirely rebuilt to the original design in 1929. It was damaged again in the 1979 Montenegro earthquake, and restored in 1987–1988.

The bronze bell which strikes the hours was cast in 1506 by Ivan Rabljanin.

The two bronze jacquemarts which strike the bell are known as Maro and Baro, or the Zelenci (green ones), due to their green patina. The present Zelenci are replicas installed in the rebuilt tower in 1929. The original Zelenci of circa 1478 are now exhibited in the Cultural History Museum in the Rector's Palace.

Godine 1780.

Two Monasteries and Stradun - Dubrovnik, Croatia.

I figured that if you can do light trails, boat trails etc, why not do people trails? This might be the best time and place to do this - here in the busy street of Stradun, where it doesn't matter if it's day or night, it's still bound to look like a thick carpet of humans has been laid out on the ground. I also happened to do this during the nice, warm afternoon light which allowed me to further heighten the rich tones of the red- and ochre-colored buildings.

The bell towers of two monasteries - Benedictine and Franciscan, are also seen here.

...

The Stradun is historic Dubrovnik's main street that is enclosed by the old fortress walls. This limestone-paved pedestrian street measures about 300 meters long connecting the western entrance Pile Gate to the eastern entrance, Ploče Gate. Stradun was the Dubrovnik's (then known as Ragusa) main thoroughfare in the 13th century. Stradun and the surrounding area were devastated during the 1667 earthquake and were also damaged during the war of 1991–92. Most of it has been repaired through the years. Many of Dubrovnik's historic buildings and monuments can be found along the Stradun, making it a popular esplanade for tourists.

In the end of Placa (Stradun) street, beside Luža, on the side of the square is the monumental Gothic-Renaissance Sponza Palace .. Sponza is one of the most beautiful palaces in the City, which has preserved its original form. Built 1516-1522, its form suggests possible appearance of the majority of public and private palaces in Dubrovnik before the earthquake of 1667.

Sponza palace –16th, century building was fisrt a custom house , then a mint .Has it's name from the word ,where rainwater was collected (Spongia-”alluvium”)

Nowadays the Sponza Palace is the home of the most important cultural institution of Dubrovnik - the archive. The archive found its home on the first floor.
