The main street, Stradun, in Dubrovnik old town, a hive of activity. For most... In 35 degree heat my Northern British constitution was severely tested - meaning this 30 second exposure with a ten stop filter was a more my kind of activity. Not moving in that heat helped!

Dubrovnik is a city in southern Croatia fronting the Adriatic Sea. It's known for its distinctive Old Town, encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century. Its well-preserved buildings range from baroque St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and Gothic Rector’s Palace, now a history museum. Paved with limestone, the pedestrianized Stradun (or Placa) is lined with shops and restaurants.

Large Onofrio’s Fountain:

As soon as you enter the Old Town to Stradun through the Pile Gate you see the large rounded polygonal shape structure with a cupola and 16 water taps.

This is known as the Large Onofrio’s Fountain, designed in 1438 by the prominent Italian architect Onofrio di Giordano della Cava.

Cava was an Italian architect from Napoli who got a job in the town to design the towns waterworks and fountains.

In the period from 1435 to 1442, Cava also designed and constructed a 12 km long water supply system that brought water from the Knežica spring, Šumet River in Rijeka Dubrovacka to the Old Town.

The waterworks were in use until the end of the 19th century.

The fountain is embellished by 16 stone carved masks (maskerons) and a statue of a dog that adorns the top walls of the fountain.

The fountain was badly damaged by the 1667 earthquake and rebuilt since.

We are inside Dubrovnik's old walled city and our Dubbrovnik Card gave us access the the town wall. We climbed the wall steep, narrow steps and the walk starts with a view down to the Jewish Fountain (Onofrio's Fountain). You must only walk one direction, or the wall police will be on your case.

The old city walls are one of Dubrovniks most popular features, now more than ever thanks to being featured in the hit TV series, Game of Thrones.

Built in the 10th century and modified in the 13th and 14th centuries, the formidable walls–as high as six meters in places, and up to six meters thick–provided a solid defence against invaders.

The walls offer numerous views over the Adriatic and inwards over the old city centre.

Took way too many shots, will try limit the number posted.

The Stradun is the main thoroughfare in Dubrovnik’s old town going from East to West and is paved in local stone. The polished effect of the paving is caused by the hundreds of thousands of footsteps by tourists who visit the old town every year.

Stradun - Old City Walls of Dubrovnik, A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Croatia.

You wouldn't find this popular street empty during the normal waking hours of the day, so the best time to avoid the crazy tourist crowd is before daybreak. And it's usually worth the early wake-up call, unless you encounter those hapless drunks lurking around the corner.

...

The Stradun is historic Dubrovnik's main street that is enclosed by the old fortress walls. This limestone-paved pedestrian street measures about 300 meters long connecting the western entrance Pile Gate to the eastern entrance, Ploče Gate. Stradun was the Dubrovnik's (then known as Ragusa) main thoroughfare in the 13th century. Stradun and the surrounding area were devastated during the 1667 earthquake and were also damaged during the war of 1991–92. Most of it has been repaired through the years. Many of Dubrovnik's historic buildings and monuments can be found along the Stradun, making it a popular esplanade for tourists.

The Old City Walls of Dubrovnik - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's easy to see why Dubrovnik is called the Pearl of the Adriatic. From this vantage point, it proves its point.

If you're in the mood for a little behind-the-scenes story, I posted one about this on my Facebook page:

...

The historic part of Dubrovnik is surrounded by walls and fortifications that go back as far as the early Middle Ages. The city walls consist of 12 forts, 15 bastions and 4 round and corner towers. It runs a course of approximately 1,940 meters (6,360 ft) in length, encircling most of the old city, and reach a maximum height of about 25 metres (82 ft). This complex structure, which is among the largest and most complete in Europe, has protected the city from many attacks during the early centuries. In 1979, the old city of Dubrovnik, including a large portion of the old walls, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stradun or Placa is a fairly wide street whose smooth cobbled surface is walked over by thousands of tourists throughout the year. It is worth mentioning that its present appearance dates back to the period when the buildings that were devastated in the terrible earthquake that shook Dubrovnik in 1667 were reconstructed. Not so long ago, Stradun itself suffered other damages. It was during the Homeland war in 1991, when an unprecedented culturecide was perpetrated, with numerous missiles landing on the famous Placa.

Stradun street is the main open area of Dubrovnik. It is the venue for all public feasts and processions, but also the main business street of the City core. It is the widest and most beautiful street that divides the City into northern and southern halves. The length of Placa street is about 300 meters (1000 feet).

The Franciscan monastery is situated on the left . The facade of the monastery church runs along Stradum street and the monastery also goes north along the old city walls as far as the tower Minčeta.

At the end of the street is the City Bell Tower.
