Tall walls surround Dubrovnik Old Town. Many visitors enjoy people-watching whilst sipping coffee in one of the numerous cosy cafes on the Stradun.

Dubrovnik

The Rector's palace was the centre of government in the old Dubrovnik Republic. It was the home of the Rector who was elected by the Great council to represent the Republic for a month and during that time he wasn't allowed to leave the palace at anytime except on government business which completely fits into the Dubrovnik Republic principle clearly stated above the doors of the Great council hall: "Obliti privatorum, publica curate" which meant "Forget private and deal with public business".
Mainly built in gothic style this building, simple and harmonic, seems almost too modest for the once so wealthy Dubrovnik. And that is not at all surprising as it is consistent with Dubrovnik omnipresent unpretentious style of building with no exaggerated luxury. Upon entering The Rector's palace one gets the impression of the past centuries returning and holds breath as if seeing the Rector himself followed by the members of The Small council (executive government body).
The Rector's palace was built in mid 15th century by the famous Neapolitan architect Onofrio di Giordano de la Cava who also constructed the Dubrovnik's waterworks (water supply system) and the famous fountains, Big and Small Onofrio's fountains.
Later when the palace was damaged in 1463 by gunpowder explosion, it was partly reconstructed by Salvi di Michele and the local craftsman adding Renaissance elements. Resulting from damage in the Great earthquake in the year of 1667 the atrium was reconstructed to some extent in baroque style adding the final touch to the Rector's palace, the way we see it today.
One of the first spectacular sights that greets you when you enter Stradun from the Pile Gate is the Great Onofrio Fountain, with its huge central dome and sixteen water taps all around. A ledge and steps around the water trough provide a perfect resting spot for tired sightseers. The fountain is the end point of the aqueduct that architects Onofrio dell Cava and Andriuzzi de Bulbilo built from a source near the river, almost 12km away, one of the first aqueducts to be built on the territories of today’s Croatia. Completed in 1438, the fountain was once more ornate with a massive cupola, but was damaged in the great earthquake and never repaired. Onofrio’s small fountain is an elegant little masterpiece decorated with playful dolphins that stands near the tower at the other end of Stradun.
Soaring high above the Stradun, the Clock Tower is a magnificent landmark of the old town, located at Luza Square.
The Old Port of Dubrovnik showing the docking area before the three arches of the Arsenal where ships were built. On the other side of these arches is the Luza Square and the eastern end of Placa Stradun (main street) of the Old City.
The polished limestone of the Stradun reflects the lights of the street lanterns, giving the appearance that the street is wet.
The Stradun is the main street in Dubrovnik, with beautiful late-Renaissance houses on each side. The Stradun is great for an evening stroll as only pedestrians are allowed.

The main entrance to Old Town from the Eastern side, Ploče Gate (also known as Vrata od Ploča) were built at the end of 14th century. The gate consist of inner and outer section and incorporates a stone bridge.
The bridge used to be just wooden drawbridge which used to be pulled up at night to prevent unwelcome guests entering the town but was later replaced by stoned one so nowadays the beautiful bridge with stone balustrade (above photo) leads through the Gate to Luza Square and Stradun.
Above the entrance of the Gate there is a statue of Sveti Vlaho, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The Revelin Fortress is built into the outer section of the Gate as a handy lookout point for towns eastern approach.

The Dubrovnik Stradun And The Old City
The Stradun (placa) is the limestone-paved pedestrian street that runs through the old stone city of Dubrovnik. That’s funny because the whole time I was there I thought it was a marble street but Wikipedia says it’s limestone. So, thank you Wiki, once again you’ve crushed my dreams... Maybe I’ll just make a little adjustment, and, boom. Now it’s marble. :) Man I love me some user generated content. (I’m kidding of course ;)
Also, I know that I’ve been posting a lot of photos from Dubrovnik lately but I just can’t help it. I fell in love with that place, I really did. There was something special about it -- something about the way I felt living inside the old city and being so close to the Adriatic Sea. I felt very at home. Even while writing this, my ADHD infected mind forced my fingers to ALT/TAB over to the interweb and research apartment prices for a return visit. Even if I don’t get back there soon. I really want to make it a priority to get back there in the future.

Off the Main Street aka Placa Stradun many picturesque smaller street run. Many of these narrow streets have restaurants, pizzerias and cafes.
