The White Rim from Island in the Sky in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Monsoonal storms moving in from the southeast kept me in the car, but I occasionally risked the lightning and dashed to this overlook.
A glimpse of last evening's breathtaking storm clouds as they fulfilled the decree of the Lord. "Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling His word!" —Psalm 148:7-8
Ten minutes earlier the sky was blue. Ten minutes later the heavens opened into a raging torrential storm.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.
I have been meaning to shoot an approaching Summer storm for a while now, just never really acted on this want. Sydney summer storms have a reputation to be quite a show - fast and furious with dramatic clouds and colours. An opportunity presented itself a couple of weeks ago - a storm front spotted on the weather bureau radar west of Sydney. After a little bit of yes/no, yes/no I finally made a decision to go. We weren't doing anything, plus Lachlan was keen to go. He has rediscovered the camera after a little break, so we grabbed our gear and headed off to town.
I didn't have a particular vantage point in mind. I looked at google maps just to see if any of the places I had in mind had a particular advantage but none stood out...
Lesson 1: Pick a definite spot before you leave...study route so you get there on time.
We left it a little too late. These storms move with some speed and by the time we got to the spot, after a few wrong turns and dead ends, the clouds totally engulfed the area...no dramatic shots of the approaching storm front this time.
Lesson 2: Dont hesitate - just go.
No problem, Lachlan was still keen and pulled his tripod and started taking some shots. We just hung out and watched people fishing while the storm sort of decided to take a more Northerly route. It started to sprinkle so we found some shelter underneath a tree/cave...great spot. Both waiting if any "magic light" would reward us for our efforts. In anycase, we put this down to a scouting mission, taking notes from our lessons.
Suddenly, some light appeared....I decided to atleast take a picture, especially after being prodded by Lachlan for not even taking the camera out of the bag. The clouds decided to break for a little while above the bridge. Yep, that will do, and I took out the camera, put on my heavy zoom and a Grad filter, and stepped out from underneath our shelter. Took two shots, turned back and took two steps and whack, walk straight into a branch. Doh. It was a decent impact and I knew I drew blood. Lachlan confirmed this when his jaw dropped and started pointing to my head. Great. Missed the storm and now collect a branch. Not wanting to spill blood all over my gear I reluctantly gave my camera plus heavy huge lens to Lachlan. By that stage he had calmed down. I told him to be very careful (just because it is so heavy). I went to the harbour shore to wash up. Luckily I had a couple of tissues in my camera bag to help stop the bleeding.
Lesson 3: Carry some basic first aid with you.
As soon as I felt that the bleeding was under control I took the camera off Lachlan and put it away. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine that he would take a few snaps of me while holding the camera.
Lesson 4: Kids will always surprise you.
Get home a little late and get roasted.
Lesson 5: Get home on time.
Enough lessons for today.

So this is near the observation deck on confederate ave. This is looking in the direction of the Eisenhower farm. The storms seemed to be coming from that direction. So this is another landscape dominated by these nasty looking clouds
