A massive supercell storm cloud looms over a rural road, with fields of grass and crops on either side. The dramatic sky shows vibrant shades of turquoise and gray, creating a striking contrast with the calm landscape below.

This tornado! Never get tired of it :) I've been wanting to take some frames from the time-lapse of this guys and do more fine turning on the editing...so I'm finally getting around to doing that. This was one of the first few frames I shot when I got to this spot south of Wynnewood, Oklahoma on May 9th, 2016.
You can see the time-lapse of this at the end of Vorticity, but it's cropped a bit so you miss out on the beautiful structure above that twister.
Part of doing the fine tuning was removing the powerlines, because while it's too difficult to do in a time-lapse, I really disliked them and wanted this to feel more in the middle of nowhere.
If you can't tell, I'm dying to get out chasing. Just about three weeks until my schedule is open and I can head out!
The beauty of storm chasing is seeing structure and organization in clouds that appears unnatural. When you look up and just know...something wicked this way comes.
This was May 24th of this year south of Holly, Colorado. One heck of a day chasing...it started south of Lamar and would end up near Moscow, Kansas before the night was over.

Non Severe late August Nebraska Thunderstorms!
Conditions were just right, almost perfect for capturing some incredible CG Nebraska Lightning. These very slow moving storm cells building just to west northwest of Kearney provided this opportunity that early morning.

South of Pyote, Texas—May 28, 2021. This storm: A) saved the first two-thirds of my day from complete incompetence, and B) was a sweet sweet deal even as it finally eroded into the Cylon Base Ship we see here.
Downside? Permian Basin foregrounds.
You can actually see this Mothership thunderstorm sucking up dirt and stones with its severe updrafts. This storm raced across Kansas at 60mph which made it very difficult to chase. The storm smashed up several towns as well as cutting off the power, it also produced Golfball size Hail and 85mph straight-line winds.
We managed to escape the worst but still took a lot of large hail. Some other chasers weren't as fortunate as they got caught up in it and had their vehicle windows smashed because of the stones and hail near Sharon Springs, Kansas.
If you fancy a photographic storm adventure like this then we are now taking bookings for the 2021 photography masterclass storm chase tour, which is Tour 5. see this link for more details.

On the last day of my Clouds 365 Project, I took my family out storm chasing. We ended driving 8 hours from Dallas to Guymon, Oklahoma to intercept the only storm of the day. What a day it was. I got the image I wanted to end my 5 year project. I captured this one just in case. Hope you enjoy!
The shaggy, fast-moving wall cloud orbiting this tornado added to its fearsome qualities as it skirted the Caprock escarpment near Matador, Texas—April 24th.
I was parked momentarily and juggling video and stills in left and right hands as my window mount setup had a malfunction. Totally crazy moment but fascinating to watch it happen. Also, worth noting, that’s ground fog hugging the horizon around it, not a processing glitch:)

Dé definitie van een 'lucky shot'. In een rijdende wagen aan +100 km/u van een zware shelfcloud wegrazen. Even snel een actiefoto willen nemen van het gevaarte achter je en flits, het perfecte moment om af te drukken! Staat: Kansas.
A spectacular tornado near Stratford, Texas yesterday. We hopped three supercells with rotating wall clouds before this third one leveled up. My daughter wrangled video while I shot stills as it tightened up behind rain in the rear flank downdraft and descended toward the fields below.
Distant mesocyclone with a setting sun lighting up the anvil on this juicy thunderstorm. The lightning intensified after sunset, which made for a great chilled evening display.

This tornado warned supercell was one of the most beautiful stormsI have seen in my years of chasing storms. I intercepted just North of Hico, TX (N. Central Texas). It had produced a tornado just minutes to my arrival. I hope you enjoy and please share! :)
I took a bit of a drive Sunday afternoon to watch the clouds and try to get some shots of day time lightning near Fox Valley Saskatchewan. I didn’t have any luck catching any bolts, but the sky was pretty chaotic at times. I’m think we saw a funnel cloud in the distance while we were driving. As I was taking this shot, the clouds got awfully twisty at the end of this swath. A farmer pulled up to chat, and said that one of the local’s had a funnel at his farm a short time earlier. They would have been “cold core funnels” which rarely touch the ground. When they do touch the ground they are usually weak and not capable of much damage. Sometimes a special weather statement is issued on a day that the public might see cold core funnels, but these are much different than tornado watches or tornado warnings associated with larger storms.

Now I've caught some incredible lightning this year.. so instead of say it was my best.... It was simply JAW DROPPING FREAKING INCREDIBLE AWESOME DELICIOUS lightning.

Solo Chase Day & Close to Home....
Luv it when the chases are in my backyard. Not having to drive 3 states and 1200 miles in 1 day is relief. I know I'm not the only chaser that says that. This was a phenomenal afternoon of severe weather. When I say this... It means that its photogenic & for the most part not effecting the farms, agriculture, livestock & the human element.
Mammatus before the storm, then I decided to bail on this first storm for the next which was to the north about 25 miles. This storm had wicked good rotation under the base. Even though it was high based it was producing some freakin awesome views.
The storm had overtaken my position and I had a 40 min drive to get back in front of this storm. It was on my tail the whole way back to the I-80 corridor. Though a little late I was still able to get back in front of shelf cloud. The teeth on the outflow were almost scraping the ground. It gave the effect of a funnel but it was not. Been doing this to long to make sure I know the difference.
That was a hoot. Though I waited til the last minute. I got swallowed by the core & had to wait it out. Want to see what its like out in the open with no shelter... This I have also done a billion times. 50mph winds rocked my truck! That was fun!
Finally, I blazed it backed to Kearney for this Storms Finale... Beautiful Sunset light illuminates the exiting storm with a Anvil Rain & Mammatus Cluster ... It was truly a Sight to See!!!!

Due to work and play ... late August 2011. The storm season sometimes lasts here til mid October. Other years, were lucky to see anything severe after the 2nd week of September.
Every years is different and while I still had the chance with final August storm I grabbed my gear and stayed local as this storm was coming to me.
Non Severe, but this storm had it's moments to give, photographically speaking.

The first of several good lightning makers on June 8th near Last Chance, Colorado. I don't get out of the car when this stuff is dropping out of the anvil, and even then it still puts me on edge. Seeing the prairie light up around a landing point makes up for some flinching.
Storm starting to gnaw on stable air and go elevated near Sterling, Colorado—June 1st. I hate to see a thing lose good surface instability, but do like the carvey notches that swirl in at those moments. Right after this, I switched to the 6D Mark II & snagged a load of out of focus shots with cool blurry panos and tractors and fields, forgetting it was in manual focus from the night before.
Lightning scaling an updraft May 26th, viewed from just west of Norton, Kansas. The day started out with a failed dryline attempt and head-scratching near Scott City and then a mad dash northeast to try salvaging something in the mob of storms that actually were thriving. A great, lightning adorned, barber pole updraft session ensued that evening.
Yesterday was the brutal day-1 drive-out grind from Arizona for the next few days of storms, but Fort Stockton, Texas, overcame the weariness. The storm structure was excellent and body-tipping inflow winds really showed off its strength as it slowly dipped southeast.
This super-cell rotating slowly in front of us , it looked like a scene from a Hollywood movie !

Monsoon thunderstorms across Arizona frequently provide some of the most intense, colorful and beautiful lightning strikes imaginable. The arid climate and associated high cloud base allows for an unimpeded view of the lightning channels during these intense storms. In the above photograph, a cloud-to-ground stroke connects with an intracloud stroke, serving as a background to the University of Arizona campus dorms in Tucson.

It's Nebraska ... This our go time for severe weather & she didn't disappoint. This was the beginning of a 3 day severe weather event in South Central Nebraska.
Now my attention was the cell that was coming right at my location. In fact there were 2 cells. I was centered on this one in the beginning due to it had a severe warning on it. Both cells would eventually be severe warned.
Though this had some incredible photogenic storm structure. It had some minor rotation with this. It had my interest.

This was my first tornado I have ever witnessed and to say that it was an amazing experience would be an understatement. I have been fascinated with weather ever since I was a little boy tracking hurricanes along with the Weather Channel at all hours of day. Since I have gotten into storm chasing, there are so many factors that go into getting to a relative safe location to document a storm. It comes down to careful planning and sometimes more than a little luck.
I wrote a blog about my experience chasing this series of thunderstorms that would continue to drop tornadoes and produce an amazing display of lightning later on that evening.

Cloud to air lighting from a newly formed storm in West Texas at dusk, or “bluehour” Happy 4th of July! Please share :)
Growing storms near the old homestead in Last Chance, CO. Taken in the summer of 2020 with a Mavic Pro 2.
As the storm clouds moved of in the distance it gave us some really nice late evening light on the landscape.
There was a batch of excellent storms in northwest Arizona a couple days ago. This one near Topock picked up a tornado warning as it crossed the Colorado River. The wall cloud is starting to gust out into a shelf at this point. Someone posted a pic of a sweet funnel cloud on this storm, but I didn't spot that from my vantage.
