Onweerseizoen 2022 werd na lang wachten evenwel geopend met veel spektakel. Toevallig in Welle vlak aan huis kwam het tot een bliksem feest!

Gemeen onweer nabij Virton afgelopen weekend. Wat een zonde dat de moeilijke regio mij dwong genoegen te nemen met een onaantrekkelijke locatie maar de structuren maakten alles goed!

After following a strong storm over the central part of the Netherlands, I ended up in the River IJssel valley close to the city of Deventer.

Here I was just on time to position myself in a good location.

Upward lightning below an arcus cloud of a thunderstorm.

The lightning discharge was initiated by a windturbine along interstate A12 in the western part of The Netherlands.

After intercepting the line of storms just south of Rotterdam, I decided to let the shelf cloud come over me.

Windshear and instability were not too impressive, so I didn't expect it to remain a long-lived storm.

It produced a few positive lightning bolts before fading out. One of these cg+ can be seen on this image.

The end of the stormchase of June 18th had a nice surprise for us: a beautiful well structured storm with distinct updraft and downdraft at sunset.

The colors of the clouds and landscape were amazing.....

A few hours after sunset the first of the storms were entering our area from the due south southwest. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this storm was gaining strength as if crept slowly ever so closer.

The amount of cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning was excessive. Excessive & Impressive. The video from this night says it all.

Enjoy these captures from this evening. Some of the best lightning I've caught in YEARS!

This is the other shot i got from the storms the other day. This shot i had to take in about 30seconds... setting tripod and getting settings then getting the pano. The reason being is it was pelting down with rain! my gear and i were getting drenched and the lens was wet so was a very hard shot to get. pleased i got it though!

A fabulous end to the day. I got bitten alive by giant mosquitoes but witnessing this was worth every single bite.

Mid September... South Central Nebraska...

Storm Warnings were just issued for Dawson County, just to the west of my location in Kearney.

The sky was talking and I was prepared. Packed up the gear and head south of Elm Creek Nebraska for that afternoons events.

Got off work late this night... and I was already tired from the night before. Severe storms came in about 3:30am and of course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Even if I had work @ 8am. Believe me when I say I was beet and tired just off a 10 hour shift. Though I'm a trooper when it comes to my dedication for severe storm photography I make every storm count. I did with this one!

With that being said this was a non severe storm that came into town about 10:30pm that evening. Super Slow mover only about 10mph moving due east. Shooting off incredible displays of forked cloud to cloud lightning. Especially when it moved right overhead! Probably the best display of cloud to cloud lighting of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures in the set of images.

A thunderstorm with shelf cloud and upward lightning approached from the south.

The sun was in the west and shining beautifully on this storm.

It started raining and blowing while the sun was still shining and the lightning was getting dangerously close.

I had to crouch down and hold the tripod. The effort was finally rewarded with this photo.

Quick cell phone shot, since I was installing my gear at that moment......

After a few weeks of rather boring weather, there was finally some thunderstorm activity in the Netherlands.

Sunday evening, July 25th, a small line of showers and thunderstorms moved towards the province where I live and I decided to give it a try.

The structure of the storm was awesome with a nice shelf cloud. Sometimes a strong blinding CG was visible below the base of the storm. More on that later.....

Nocturnal non-tornadic supercell with several multiple lightning strikes. This is a quintuple one. On the far left side, one can observe the rotating wall cloud. A funnel has been observed. No confirmed contact with the ground. Athens, Greece, Oct. 13, 2021.

First Moderate Risk in South

Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.

A short jaunt down the severe weather risk area that day from Kearney Nebraska. Arrived in Alma Nebraska a tad behind schedule. The storm was already tornado warned and produced a tornado southwest of Alma. Storm was raging and I wasn't in a good place. Had to core punch this storm & headed east via Hwy 136. That's were this collection of images starts.

I was east bound on Hwy 136 that skirts the border of Nebraska / Kansas. This would take me deep into the Moderate Risk for that severe weather day. Instability was visible everywhere out in front of this storm. A Mammatus Cluster with a wall cloud was right in front of me while another supercell was producing tornadoes behind my current location.

Wicked Beautiful Supercell Structure as I got up close & personal. Especially by Franklin Nebraska where I encountered my first Tornado of 2022.

East then north out of Red Cloud Nebraska. The storms were still producing severe weather but was exiting fast out of my range. End this day with a spectacular view of the backside of the storm. A huge mammatus cloud cluster to enjoy as I was heading home!

Four years ago today, things got a little rowdy in northeast Arizona. Staring down one of the supercells that lit up along an outflow boundary before looming over Dilkon. The background shelf cloud at way lower left eventually caught up and turned everything into a baseball sized hail-maker near Holbrook.

An incredible day of chasing in Wyoming and to end it up in the Scottsbluff Nebraska area was just to good to be true. Some of my best stormscapes to this date!!!

The final 2 shots of the day were of these insane mammatus clouds on the outskirts of Scottsbluff Nebraska. A little blurry but I didn't care anymore... I was to tired to even shoot another capture... but I did.

Storm Chasing Video from afternoon on Flickr Click Here

September was still hot & humid within the wide open plains of Nebraska. The drought this time of year is normal. The heat is not. Was lucky to get this lone storm that afternoon.

The winding down of the storm season is right on time. We did have a few night storms with some good lighting. But my time is limited this time of year. Was only able to get this event.

A photogenic storm was what I need & what was received that afternoon. It was the last storm that I chased for 2022.

Thanks for Watching & Supporting my Photography here on Flickr!

Going through some of my pictures from 2021 I forgot I was lucky enough to capture an electrical storm rolling through.

In transit from Montana to our next chase destination in New Mexico on May 23rd, we stumbled across some prettier than expected storms in Wyoming. A bit south of Kaycee here, as this shelf played at some road mirroring games.

Early September 2023...

Gear Packed & Primed! Drove west from Kearney out to Lexington Nebraska area. Once the warnings started to fire out in West Central Nebraska. It was time to do my thing. It was to see one of the last supercells of the summer of 2023 & I wasn't gonna miss out. This truly had incredible, beautiful structure. Was tornado warned & had all the right elements for what I do.

No I didn't see a Tor-nader that day. I got a few snaps of what I think was a wall cloud to the cell northwest of my location.

I was there for the structure & I got those incredible snaps... It is what I came for!

*** PERSONAL NOTE***

I travel a lot of roads LESS TRAVELED than most in Nebraska due to what I do. After the Lexington Nebraska event.. I had to shoot back a few miles due my proximity to the storm.

As I traveled west then south from Overton Nebraska .. Via Nebraska Road "748" heading west. My normal spot was taken due to harvesting from the farmers. Cows were in my favorite spot. So a drove a few miles to the west. I had been by here about 1000+ times but never realized there there was an historical marker here.

So unknowingly, as I pulled into this little area with no power-lines I found a new place to take snaps but it has some historical value. Thought I would add this link for those of you that are curious about this Famous Nebraska Historical Marker.

3nd Chase of 2017...

Most of you know that follow me on Flickr & Social Media... that I love good opportunities to capture lightning. It was one of the reasons why I took up storm photography 20+ years ago. I didn't have many opportunities in 2016 to capture lightning...

This year it started off with a Bang. I couldn't have asked for a better situation. Disappointed of that afternoons chase... I was redeemed by the storms ample cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes. An epic night of storm photography!

It has been dry here. Very dry! Storms were foretasted to be in the South Central Nebraska area but they came late... About 1:30 in the morning and I was already tired. However the storms were close enough to get a few snaps then head back to a late night delicious BLT ok ... maybe 2 of them and then to bed! Home grown tomatoes this year have been fabulous!

More storms were looking good for the next afternoon and I wasn't going to miss this event since we haven't had any... More to come!

Crawler Lightning Over Central Texas, April 26, 2023.

Anvil crawler lightning, sometimes called spider lightning, is created when leaders propagate through horizontally-extensive charge regions in mature thunderstorms, usually the stratiform regions of mesoscale convective systems.

Looking west toward Valle from about ten miles northeast of SP Crater tonight. Storms were further out than I was hoping. Telephoto mode engaged.

Looking to get to the best position for this incoming shelf cloud! Moved again to get the best advantage for my captures. Now east side of Kearney on some new roads still under construction, no traffic and all open sky that I want.

This storm cell eventually developed into a monster with quarter sized hail and 60+mph wind speeds. This was a terrific photographic beast. A dangerous but a fruitful basket of storm chasing eye candy!

On the outskirts of a large supercell around the Kansas border

It was a decent chase day (and night). As the storm moves away, there is a sharp boundary between that and the clear starry night sky. A distant bolt completes the frame.

Late evening lightning storm in Colorado close to the Kansas border.

September 6th 2022, by chaser Jeroen. Monster supercell near the Dutch city of Bergen-Op-Zoom with fenomenal structure.

The monsoon looks like it's going to take a little break as it searches for more powerups. This was a fun one from last week, August 11th, looking south of Flagstaff. It had a little bit of directional shear to work with and managed to get sculpted in various ways as it headed south.

End of day 2 chase in Colorado near to the Kansas border chasing a supercell until sunset where we were able to get some nice lightning strikes as darkness fell.

Only lightning strike this night.

Late evening in Montana, beautiful light of the setting sun as the stormy clouds move off in the distance.

Tornado near Patricia in Texas. (we was on the run).

May 26th 2014.
