Onweerseizoen 2022 werd na lang wachten evenwel geopend met veel spektakel. Toevallig in Welle vlak aan huis kwam het tot een bliksem feest!

Gemeen onweer nabij Virton afgelopen weekend. Wat een zonde dat de moeilijke regio mij dwong genoegen te nemen met een onaantrekkelijke locatie maar de structuren maakten alles goed!

After following a strong storm over the central part of the Netherlands, I ended up in the River IJssel valley close to the city of Deventer.

Here I was just on time to position myself in a good location.

After intercepting the line of storms just south of Rotterdam, I decided to let the shelf cloud come over me.

Windshear and instability were not too impressive, so I didn't expect it to remain a long-lived storm.

It produced a few positive lightning bolts before fading out. One of these cg+ can be seen on this image.

These are truly My Best Lightning Captures to date!

An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...

I was that Lucky Gut that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence.. lol

Upward lightning below an arcus cloud of a thunderstorm.

The lightning discharge was initiated by a windturbine along interstate A12 in the western part of The Netherlands.

The end of the stormchase of June 18th had a nice surprise for us: a beautiful well structured storm with distinct updraft and downdraft at sunset.

The colors of the clouds and landscape were amazing.....

A few hours after sunset the first of the storms were entering our area from the due south southwest. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this storm was gaining strength as if crept slowly ever so closer.

The amount of cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning was excessive. Excessive & Impressive. The video from this night says it all.

Enjoy these captures from this evening. Some of the best lightning I've caught in YEARS!

This thunderstorm was becoming more defined as it strengthened.

National Weather Service had a severe warning on this cell as it was slowly moving to the east northeast. As we were east of Minden Nebraska and were finally able to pull out ahead of this cell.

We paused for a few minutes to absorb the moment!

A fabulous end to the day. I got bitten alive by giant mosquitoes but witnessing this was worth every single bite.

Quick cell phone shot, since I was installing my gear at that moment......

After a few weeks of rather boring weather, there was finally some thunderstorm activity in the Netherlands.

Sunday evening, July 25th, a small line of showers and thunderstorms moved towards the province where I live and I decided to give it a try.

The structure of the storm was awesome with a nice shelf cloud. Sometimes a strong blinding CG was visible below the base of the storm. More on that later.....

A thunderstorm with shelf cloud and upward lightning approached from the south.

The sun was in the west and shining beautifully on this storm.

It started raining and blowing while the sun was still shining and the lightning was getting dangerously close.

I had to crouch down and hold the tripod. The effort was finally rewarded with this photo.

Almost late June 2020, and the severe weather season has been just down right horrible for anything of photographic value this year. I mean this when I say Chase Locally. Due to Health issues, Truck maintenance issues, Equipment Issues, Camera Issues... With all that has been going on in my life, I've had to pick my chasing days and nights carefully this year. To be 100% Honest... I'm just happy I get to chase! Never let bad things set you back when the opportunity presents itself. That's my motto!

Luckily I had all my gear ready to go when when had strong severe thunderstorms develop in north central Nebraska and they were cresting southward down to south central Nebraska. My home turf.

This time of year is when everything changes weather wise here in south central Nebraska. Monsoons down in the southwest part of the US are firing and that usually means for us no storms. Not in 2020. Even though we had a late start to severe weather season here... mother nature hasn't let me down so far. She has remained active in my neck of the woods.

All the storms this day were outflow boundary generated storms. Meaning no tornadoes this day. Though I did capture 1 funnel, you'll see this in the video. Though with outflow dominate storms shelf clouds form and they can be more than picturesque. Its what I was hunting for this day! Oh did I get some and then some!

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...

As all of my cameras were pointed towards the supercell showing all that rotation. I really didn't pay attention to the storm that was coming in from the due north, until I paused to look that way.

2nd Storm was almost on top of my location. Luckily it was moving to the southeast & that meant I had a little time before the storm moved directly over.

This 2nd storm was outflow dominate. Producing this incredibly photogenic shelf cloud as in slow crept toward the city of Kearney.

This storm just kept getting photographically better by the minute. I had to flip 180s for a few mins as both storms was producing some insane storm photography!

Supercell thunderstorms, some of them tornadic, crossed West Germany on this day.

During our stormchase in the Eifel, we intercepted our first supercell near the town of Prüm. In the photo, an ominous sky is rapidly approaching. This is the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) of the storm.

Shortly thereafter, the storm became a hail-producing monster with a 100 km hail track as far as Koblenz. Unfortunately, due to the high speed of the storm and the terrain, we could not follow this cell and we went on our way to new thunderstorms.

Probably the best night time thunderstorm I experienced during my three and a half year stay in Romania.

Elevated supercells moved eastward over Transylvania with an awsome CG barrage.

When I heard thunder, I jumped out of my bed and started taking photographs from the entrance of my greenhouse building.

Unfortunately I had the settings wrong from my last photography, so the lightning bolt is over-exposed.

I think f/13 was okay with lightning this close, but 1600 ISO is just weird.....

This is NOT 6 Tornadoes... it is the Genesis of 1 Tornado Overlapped or Stacked...

Its been a few weeks of no storms in south central Nebraska, we decided to head west for a fun filled afternoon of severe weather! A moderate risk day with PDS warnings on the supercells that we were chasing that afternoon.

We knew where we wanted to chase and had planned it out perfectly. From Kearney to Scottsbluff NE. From Scottsbluff to Torrington Wy, and then Hwy 85 South. We ended up parked right under a 4g cell tower, close to the Hwy 85 & junction 216 with time to spare. Perfect position, perfect light, and we had perfect cell signal to stream this event live.

Now the official report says this is an E-F0 Tornado. It only lasted about 4 4 1/2 minuets. Approximate path length was 2.8 miles, and max width was 80 yards. It was the first of the day to touchdown in Wyoming.

Proud to say that this was my first time that my video stream was on the Weather Channel via StormViewLive.com and these were the photos that coincided with that day... The video is to long to post to Flickr, but it can be viewed via this link. goo.gl/m65rN4,

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!

First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.

We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.

This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.

Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.

We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast.

The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.

Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Found and open spot just to the south of Merna Nebraska. Had the perfect view and this thunderstorm was talking!

Loaded all the gear out and started my thing. This truly would become one of my best photographic outings for storms in 2020. Glad I made the effort to go. In spite I just had major surgery 3 days before!

What was an Epic day of Storm and Sky on the Eastern Plains of Colorado.

We had a late start to get to our destination of Goodland Kansas that afternoon. Though with that said we did see one Landspout / Tornado just to the south of Burlington Colorado. Of couse we would have luv'd to see some of the naders about 100 miles to our west but we didn't plan this one out correctly to do so.

Bumped into Legendary storm chaster Danial Shaw from Down Under... as he pulled up next to us shortly after we got there. I pretty sure he caught what we could see south of Burlington up close and personal.

Storm went outflow dominate as it squeezed its way into northwest Kansas. We ended this days chase between St. Francis and Bird City Kansas.

Early September 2023...

Gear Packed & Primed! Drove west from Kearney out to Lexington Nebraska area. Once the warnings started to fire out in West Central Nebraska. It was time to do my thing. It was to see one of the last supercells of the summer of 2023 & I wasn't gonna miss out. This truly had incredible, beautiful structure. Was tornado warned & had all the right elements for what I do.

No I didn't see a Tor-nader that day. I got a few snaps of what I think was a wall cloud to the cell northwest of my location.

I was there for the structure & I got those incredible snaps... It is what I came for!

*** PERSONAL NOTE***

I travel a lot of roads LESS TRAVELED than most in Nebraska due to what I do. After the Lexington Nebraska event.. I had to shoot back a few miles due my proximity to the storm.

As I traveled west then south from Overton Nebraska .. Via Nebraska Road "748" heading west. My normal spot was taken due to harvesting from the farmers. Cows were in my favorite spot. So a drove a few miles to the west. I had been by here about 1000+ times but never realized there there was an historical marker here.

So unknowingly, as I pulled into this little area with no power-lines I found a new place to take snaps but it has some historical value. Thought I would add this link for those of you that are curious about this Famous Nebraska Historical Marker.

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.

Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.

Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.

It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

January 2020

It has been awhile since I have come back to this set of images.

Original Set of Images can be found here on Flickr

This set of images is and still has been the most stolen set of images I have on the web on several platforms. Literately millions of views with no link back to my work or my photostream. Probably why I haven't revisited this set til now.

Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.

Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.

Beautiful storm photography from my best of 2014 Collection!

Late evening lightning storm in Colorado close to the Kansas border.

Crawler Lightning Over Central Texas, April 26, 2023.

Anvil crawler lightning, sometimes called spider lightning, is created when leaders propagate through horizontally-extensive charge regions in mature thunderstorms, usually the stratiform regions of mesoscale convective systems.
