The only insect I could find today.
With family in Atlantic Canada and pretty well an annual trip there, we use our travel time for a stopover and explore new places or perhaps visit old favorites. This is a familiar favorite. We arrived just after hurricane Lee and fortunately, it did not affect our reservations. Just after we left, tropical storm Phillipe rumbled through the area! Next year, we might have to try more for the middle of October to see if fall colors make this spot any prettier than it already is. Off season definitely seems to be the time to go as there are far less bugs and people.
Stopover on the migration route…
According to the bird map, they likely overwintered along the Atlantic coast, and are headed to their breeding grounds. In Ontario they may breed way up north on Hudson Bay, or they could be flying to the western and northern provinces also. I find it fascinating to think of how far some birds travel during migration. Every stop along the way is important.

Quiet lakes and wetlands come alive with the breezy whistle of the American Wigeon, a dabbling duck with pizzazz. Breeding males have a green eye patch and a conspicuous white crown, earning them the nickname "baldpate." Females are brushed in warm browns with a gray-brown head and a smudge around the eye. Noisy groups congregate during fall and winter, plucking plants with their short gooselike bill from wetlands and fields or nibbling plants from the water's surface. Despite being common their populations are declining.

* I actually have a 73-300mm but the micro 4/3's 2x crop factor makes the lens a 600mm at full zoom out.

During a short stopover in Brno on the way from Wien to Liberec I was able to photograph a few Tatra T3s, though unfortunately not any of the unique K2s. Brno was still a rather interesting place at the time with both interesting tramways and lots of old locomotives on passenger trains. I unfortunately was not smart enough to spend any significant time there when I lived in Vienna, the old trains have mainly been replaced but I do need to get back to properly photograph the tramway.

Based on the commotion in the backyard this morning, I suspected another owl. This time it was an adult. Tolerating the nuisance robins and even a ruby crowned kinglet chewing it out. They are so pretty. It is interesting that for the past 4 weeks, a GHO shows up in our backyard trees on the day before weekly watering. We'll see if it sticks around after tomorrow.

One day, while taking my boys out for fun stuff around the south bay, we stopped at Alviso for the sunset. Still, having only shot the trains in the area a few times---hat-tip, MattyD90---I needed to get to a decent spot. We decided on this one and enjoyed the color.
