Overexposing an expired Fujichrome Velvia 50 to -1 stop. The expiration is dated June 2012.
Note: I'm not expecting that the entire film roll is still fine (surprisingly!!) because I've accidentally dropped the camera and its cover opened in one of my bicycle rides.

Paused at La Crosse, WI is Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha. Passengers and crew take a moment to stretch during the train's extended stop. It was long enough of a stop to allow the photographer to disembark, ascend a nearby bridge and get this photo! In frame is Amtrak 10-6 Sleeper 2670 "Silver Terrain". 2670 was built by Budd in 1956 as CB&Q 485. It was sold to Amtrak in 1971 and was retired in 1981. It would be scrapped in 1985.

The impressive signal gantry at St Denys forms the perfect backdrop to Class 31 No. 31210, which is heading the 1320 Bristol Temple Meads - Portsmouth Harbour service on 7th July 1978. Back in the day we used to 'have a week's bash', which was five days consecutive gricing days. This was the final day, and I recall being knackered - you can have too much of a good thing! I think the week consisted of Liverpool on Monday, Peterborough, Tuesday, Woodhead and Masborough Wednesday, Dawlish Thursday and the Southampton area Friday. It was a case of needing to go back to work for a rest! Copyright Photograph John Whitehouse - all rights reserved.

A few minutes after I took this, the pelican was off again.
In the background is the boardwalk that leads into the gardens, just one of many ways in.

… and for the life of us we cannot recall the place name, sorry. Needless to say, not many roadside cafes enjoy a view like this.

Spent a week in magical Ladakh, India. It was a truly eye-opening experience for me. Beautiful landscape with mountain-top monasteries. Beautiful people who are made stonger by the harsh environment.

A visitor unexpectedly arrived yesterday, hitting the no-fly zone known as my balcony door with a thud. Fortunately, I was at my desk and was able to immediately provide first aid in the form of the warmth of my hands. Having once raised small African waxbills, I found that the single most important factor in recovery for birds is heat.
This little guy, the second smallest bird in Wisconsin (I'm sure you can guess the first), is a male Golden-Crowned Kinglet*, about 4 inches long, and momentarily detoured from his southerly migration. As with other occasional patients, he took some time to respond, seemingly happy peering out from my cupped hand. I always stroke the breast just to insure that they stay awake and the heart responds until they gain their bearings a bit from what is obviously shock. Happily, he did just that and flew off after about 10 minutes of treatment. The comment photo shows the reason for his name. (*And thanks to Kathleen for the ID correction.)

This juvenile Great Horned Owl stopped in my backyard for a bit until the harassment from the Robins became too much. They were dive bombing it and taking nips out of its head feathers. It took off after I was able to get a few shots. I can still tell where it is in the neighborhood based upon the upset birds nearby LOL.
