A 17thC guide stoop north of Hob Hurst's House on Gibbet Moor, East Moor.
This side reads:

This is Beethovan, the performing Peregrine Falcon at the Galt Winter Bird Festival...the fastest animal on earth, flying at speeds up to 200 mph! His bother, Bach, who usually peforms was left at home, his trainer said because he had the look he may not come back! Beethovan was to fly at high speed and then fly thru his trainers legs...that didn't happen. I think he accidently brought Bach instead of Beethovan...lol! This beautiful falcon did a couple of stoops at impressive high speeds and then took off into the wild blue yonder...he did have a transmitter on his back. One of the kids in the audience asked how far he would go...the trainer said, 'he has wings' now the show is over and I have to go track him down.
I guess I should have added, this is not a falcon from the wild!

An 18thC Guide Stoop near Edensor. This side shows a hand pointing east and is marked 'Bakewell Rode' and the date 1709.
Two other faces are marked 'Sheffield Rode' and 'Chesterfield Rode'.

I am awfully in love with this old Konica film and just bought the rest I could find at a decent price. It's too bad so many great emulsions have gone the way of the Dodo. I have to say I definitely prefer the look of this stuff to Pro400H or Portra400 personally... It sort of has the best qualities of both of those to me. Guess I"ll have to mae it last.
In the days when roads were in even worse condition than we find them today many travellers tried to keep to the higher groundwhere this allowed a more direct route and there were a lot of tracks and paths across the Derbyshire and Yorkshire moors. In 1697 and Act was passed which decreed that in the more remote parts where two or more paths intersected, the local Surveyors were to erect guideposts or guide stoops showing the way to the nearest market town. There was no defined standard and the survivors show a great variety in lettering and size. Some incorporate a pointing hand alongside the place name.
This example is on Beeley Moor and points the way to Bakewell and Sheffield.
In 1697 during the reign of William III an Act was passed which decreed that in the more remote parts, where two or more paths intersected, the local Surveyors were to erect guideposts or guide stoops showing the way to the nearest market town. After all these years the inscription on the stoop has been weathered away.
