Is that a tongue?

Stinkbug, Sai Kung, Hong Kong

It's a wise gardener who knows what's eating the plants. Our Buttonbush, blooming or not, attracts a wide array of insects. This year, Green Stinkbug Nymphs are enjoying the leaves. Despite being agricultural pests, they make interesting macro subjects. I try to let all creatures "Live and Let Live" in the garden - that is UNTIL they begin devouring everything in sight.

A common visitor year round in Michigan. You can even see the little red photoreceptor eyes on it's head (ocelli) !

5th instar nymph stinkbugs on rocket plant - taken in Gordon's Bay garden.

Common name: Southern green shieldbug.

Scientific name: Nezara viridula.

Family: Pentatomidae.

I think this is a Birch Shieldbug, Elasmostethus interstinctus. This one was enjoying bright orange nasturtiums on a sunny afternoon.

A boxelder bug (Boisea trivittata), commonly known as a stinkbug.

Brown Marmorated Stinkbug designed and folded by Jake Schenthal. Folded from an uncut square of origamido paper. Hope you all like it! :)

Shield bugs, like this green shield bug (Palomena prasina) don't have a single metamorphosis like beetles who go from being a larvae and then pupating and emerging as an adult beetle.

Instead, they have five instar stages where they moult several times and gradually become more and more like the final adult version. This one is the fifth and final stage so after the next moult it will be an adult - here we can see the early stages of wings on its back, but it still is unable to fly unlike the adult is.

But there is another twist to identifying these. They come in two colour variants so some are like this in green and black and some don't have the black parts and is just green.

I have no idea why yet, but you can find both variants in the same places - which is exactly what I did as here is one of the green ones shot right before this one: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53639718662/

Who knew stink bugs could be so beautiful? The orange on this particular one looks like orange peel!

It’s that time of year when stink bugs think they should be living inside the house. This one was on my office window back in April 2016. The ones that enter get gently picked up with a tissue and escorted back outside.

This insect was in our garden perched on a blade of wild scallion. A Rough Stink Bug

(Brochymena) is beneficial to the garden...eating aphids and catepillars. Thanks to

"Mr & Mrs Apteryx australis" for the ID!!

I'm not certain on the species ID. Any correction or confirmation would be appreciated.

Taken in my yard in Central Florida.

Canon Rebel XSi and Canon 18-55.

No se si es una Nezara viridula o una Edessa meditabunda, agradezco cualquier ayuda.

I'm not sure if it's a Nezara viridula or an Edessa meditabunda, I'd appreciate any help.
