Matheson Hammock Park, Coral Gables, FL
A shot of the coral rock steps leading into the man-made atoll pool, which is flushed naturally with the tidal action of nearby Biscayne Bay. I had the remove some soaking wet cart board from the steps before taking this shot.
The sunrise wasn't spectacular but the clouds made up for it and the photo shoot gave me some ideas for different compositions etc. So I hope the next time I'll also get some sunrise colors in addition to everything else (clouds, reflections etc.). ;-)

The 199 steps in Whitby lead up the hill to St.Mary's church. At several places there are benches that were originally installed to allow coffin bearers to rest while making their way up to the graveyard.

During Venetian rule, salt was harvested from salt pans around the island.

This is the mausoleum of the first great Turkic Muslim holy man, Kozha Akhmedi Yasaui, a revered Sufi teacher and mystical poet.
The Mausoleum of Khawaja Ahmed Yasawi is an unfinished mausoleum in the city of Turkestan, in southern Kazakhstan. The structure was commissioned in 1389 by Timur, who ruled the area as part of the expansive Mongol Empire, to replace a smaller 12th-century mausoleum of the famous Turkic poet and Sufi mystic, Khoja Ahmed Yasawi (1093–1166). However, construction was halted with the death of Timur in 1405.
Despite its incomplete state, the mausoleum has survived as one of the best-preserved of all Timurid constructions. Its creation marked the beginning of the Timurid architectural style. The experimental spatial arrangements, innovative architectural solutions for vault and dome constructions, and ornamentations using glazed tiles made the structure the prototype for this distinctive art, which spread across the empire and beyond.
The religious structure continues to draw pilgrims from across Central Asia and has come to epitomize the Kazakh national identity. It has been protected as a national monument, while UNESCO recognized it as the country's first site of patrimony, declaring it a World Heritage Site in 2003.

“Alfama Steps” — Cobblestone steps wind between buildings in the Alfama, Lisbon.
We wandered quite a bit during our May visit to Lisbon this year. (This was part of a 6-week trip that took us to Portugal, Spain, and Belgium.) When I write “wandered,” I mean this quite literally — we frequently head out with only the vaguest idea of what we’ll explore. In this case, we knew we were headed to the Alfama district, but beyond that we would wing it.
The Alfama is full of narrow, twisty, and often steep streets — just the sort of place to wander slowly. Roughly speaking we first crossed a section of the lower reaches of the district, and then we turned and began climbing. Along the way, we took many detours. If a side street looked interesting we went that way. I made this photograph in a quiet, out of the way area, where steps led uphill between the closely-spaced buildings.
