Mark a dimple in the center of the body cap with the center punch tool. A nail or similar tool will work also.

This block was first published as the Quartered Star Block, but is also known as the Ribbon Star. Complete instructions for this block blogged here: Quartered Star Quilt Block

Carefully tape the aluminum disk to the body cap ensuring the pinhole is still centered in the 1/4" drilled hole. Allow adhesive to completely dry.

After the silicone adhesive dries carefully remove the tape.

Here you can see that we have pained the purple stripes as well. Unlike the pink, the purple stripes were not going straight down the center of the green but off-set to the side a bit. Also, you can see where I have feathered the green over the diamonds, feathering like this makes for better tape lines and less bleed. It's even better if you can feather in the colour you are painting over (so feathering in orange, in this case) but the orange was from the previous painting of the room and so we didn't have it available (and I didn't really think about that idea until after this project was basically completed).

After coloring around the pinhole with the sharpie marker it's time to remove all the masking tape. Your pen painting should be darker than mine as the marker I used was not very dark.

Slide the aluminum disk around until the pinhole is centered in the 1/4" drill hole.

Using a White Two-Way Nail art Pen/Brush make little white dots in a diagonal pattern along the top left of your nails. They can be big or little dots, don't worry about them being perfectly even.

Using the paper scissors cut a very small piece of tape to mask over the pinhole.

The adhesive should look like this when applied.

Round off the corners of the square so there are no sharp edges to cut yourself.

After the dimple is sanded away a small hole should appear in the aluminum. Use the needle once more to gently round out the hole (both sides).

Using some weight push the aluminum disk onto the body cap.

Cut a 3/4"x 3/4" (apx) square piece from the aluminum sheet.

Rub the dimple side (bottom side) gently on the 600-800 grit block/paper.

Place a very thin layer of silicone adhesive around the outside of the aluminum disk. Too much adhesive will smear all over the disk and into the hole making a mess and possibly ruining the disk.

Here is the dimple (top side) and it has not made a visible hole yet.

the final collage.

Using a large sharpie marker (the only marker I had I DO NOT recommend) dot the unpainted area around the

Body cap with 1/4" hole drilled in the center.

The only way up the ladder to success is to go STEP by STEP. But sometimes you have to take a step backwards or sideways to ensure that keep climbing and that the way is blocked for others.

In STEP by STEP you can try this out on one, two or three other candidates, without putting your job at risk straight away!

Once the paint is dry remove the tiny piece of tape covering the pinhole.

Using the heavy sewing needle gently push a dimple into the aluminum. Do not go all the way through as the hole will appear when the dimple is sanded.

In order to do the 'x'-es, I went ahead and taped the whole thing overlapping. I then took a razor blad and made cuts to the tape to allow me to cut away the pieces of tape which should be taken away. I could use the existance of the other direction of the tape to make sure I cut in the right places.
