One large triangle*, cut from a 3-7/8 inch square cut diagonally

Two small triangles, cut from a 2-3/8 inch square, cut diagonally

Lay the fabric so that the straight edge is where you want the side of the block to be, then lay the rose-in-progress over it. Slide them apart a 1/2 inch (or a little more) to account for the seam allowance, then cut the background even with the edge of the rose.

Now I just need to sign it...

Once you have defined two corners and one straight side, it makes it easier to figure out what you need to fill in the spaces to complete the square block.

Before you begin, check that the size of the 1" test square on the template for That Thirties Thing actually printed at ONE INCH. If not, go back and check your printer settings to make sure you haven't got any resize options selected.

Two other "before you begin" don't forgets:

1. If you use a 1/4" foot with an edge on your machine, replace it with the standard foot.

2. Set your machine to use a shorter stitch.

I also wanted the background pieces to end up on-grain. I started with squares and cut diagonally across to create half-square triangles. You'll need a 4" square for the inner triangle (numbered 6 on the template) and a 5" square for the outside tirangle (7). If you cut 2 squares of each side, you'll have enough HSTs to piece 4 units (the whole block).

In the photo you can see how the corners of the HSTs line up with the center of the center and the corners of the block.

Make 4 identical rectangles. Now you're ready to assemble the quartered star block. Complete instructions for this block blogged here: Quartered Star Quilt Block

Add the rectangle on the lower left. Complete instructions for this block blogged here: Quartered Star Quilt Block

This square should measure 3.5 inches.
