If you are a little dyslexic like me, you might want to lay the two half-rectangle triangles on the block to confirm that you've cut correctly and kept the right pair. Then you can flip the rectangle so that it's right-sides together with the "middle" next to it, take your unit to the sewing machine and sew it in place.
After the first fabric has been trimmed, add the next fabric by lining up the edge of the strip with your trimmed seam allowance. Holding the two fabrics together, sew along the seam line (paper side up).
When your first unit is complete, it will look like this from the right side. Press it, admire it, but don't trim it to size until you FLIP IT OVER.
After you have completed the first two seams and trimmed, your unit will look something like this. Notice that I haven't been perfect on trimming that seam allowance. It won't matter because I am not sewing 1/4" from the edge, I am sewing on the lines.
Now for some actual text and other element. It's not very elaborate, but it should do the trick as a poster. The very large text in the direction of his eyes will grab attention.
I usually use a water-soluable glue stick to hold the first piece of fabric in place. I check the placement by holding the template, with the printed side facing me, up to a light. You can see that my 2.5-inch noodle extends off the bottom here.
At this point I shift from non-scan blue to a pencil. Right now I'm using a mechanical HB pencil because this will be pure pen and ink not gradiated smooth greyscale or color. Now everything is tightened up to the point of inking. Almost every stroke you make will be inked, so make it perfect. If it doesn't work, erase and re-do it till it works.
