STEM fields is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The acronym is in use regarding access to work visas for immigrants who are skilled in these fields. The initiative began to address the perceived lack of qualified candidates for high-tech jobs. It also addresses concern that the subjects are often taught in isolation, instead of as an integrated curriculum. [Maintaining a citizenry that is well versed in the STEM fields is a key portion of the public education agenda of the United States.

Careers in the global workforce of the future will rely heavily upon preparation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. So the University of Hartford's College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP) and its community partners — Hartford Public Schools, Saint Francis Care, East Hartford Public Schools, West Hartford Public Schools, and the Connecticut Science Center — sponsored the 2014 Connecticut STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Conference at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford on Oct. 6.
