Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, chief coroner, has released the following statement regarding the decision to direct an inquest into the events that occurred in Tumbler Ridge on Feb. 10, 2026:

“On the afternoon of Feb. 10, 2026, an entire community was forever changed and multiple families who call Tumbler Ridge home received the catastrophic news that their loved ones had lost their lives.

“The news that an individual had killed two adults and six children in a private residence and a local secondary school quickly spread across national and international media. With that, came passionate public discussions about mental health and possible gaps in support systems.

“It is with this in mind that I have reflected on the BC Coroners Service’s responsibility to reinforce confidence in the system and support public safety in British Columbia when it comes to all sudden, unnatural and unexpected deaths, and all children’s deaths.

“That is why, pursuant to Section 18 of the Coroners Act, I am directing a coroner’s inquest to publicly review the circumstances that led to nine individuals losing their lives in Tumbler Ridge on Feb. 10.

“An inquest will provide an independent and transparent forum to publicly examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, assess systemic and procedural issues, and make evidence-based recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Importantly, it will involve the participation of the people in British Columbia through a jury of five to seven people.

“My sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. The grief they are experiencing at this time is unimaginable. The BC Coroners Service will continue to work with the families and the community of Tumbler Ridge to make sure their needs are met and their questions answered.

“An announcement with more details about the timing of the inquest will be provided once our investigative phase is concluded.”

I designed these buttons as part of my friend Kat's campaign in student politics. The whole thing was great fun, and she won the race, so that's nice. Check out www.katlord.ca for the website I helped design for her and some samples of the poster art we did.

This digital portfolio represents my journey and the steps I am taking on this course. Everything I create is of value within my progression, especially as I begin to understand the themes that are surfacing. This poster was created for my Viva dated 28/1/14. As I reflect upon it, I feel it generates a holistic representation of my studies. In the poster I used an image of a ‘universe’ to represent themes that are ongoing. The planet is in silhouette to represent my fascination of extreme light. Using cardboard as my canvas is a replicated process, I believe it is because of the texture and physical layers of the material visually representing the layers of myself and my work. With regards to Jung’s theory, I am interested by the fact that my perceptions and understandings are influenced by my own personal unconscious as well as the collective unconscious of humanity. The dark planet might not be a literal representation, but perhaps a sense of unknown, therefore I have undertaken a process of my personal and collective unconscious surfacing to become part of my conscious workings. Without realising it, the image I created was a representation of a similar image I had seen whilst relaxing and browsing through a book. It was only in retrospect that I recognised the connections, as though my unconscious was aware of the significance and taken a snapshot of this image, days before my consciousness. I feel this poster strongly describes where some of these images from digital portfolio have spiralled from, just as a fellow student in my Viva said, “your piece is more significant than a world”.

This picture is called "Harvard doesn't equal Success and Happiness". It is important to be dedicated to one's goals and important to take every step necessary to meet them. But in doing so, one should never forget that at the end of the day what matters is how happy one is.

As a student, I relate to the struggles of getting into college and relate to how us students equate college with the success we will inherit. What we don't realize is that after we have spent our better days we will never look back at the grades we earned but the times we spent.

In this picture, the smile is made out of coins to symbolize success and happiness. One of the books on the left reads "All the light we cannot see" which displays the notion of equating college with happiness and success. Even though it is true to some extent, it is not all there is to it and hence there are somethings that the "light" cannot see.
