City Life/Vida Urbana activists held a rally outside the Edward Brooke courthouse to demand cancellation of eviction cases in Housing Court until the coronavirus crisis is over.
Organizers issued a public statement as follows:
Trips are cancelled. University classes are going online. Conferences and conventions are postponed. All of this is due to the coronavirus, which is clearly a real public health emergency. One obvious place not mentioned which should close down is the housing court. It is one of the worst places to leave open if you want to prevent a spreading infection. More specifically, all evictions except those by owner-occupants should be stayed.
1. There are hundreds of people squeezed into a small space without adequate ventilation.
2. Even if a person who is ill will feel that they have to go to Housing Court. Otherwise they will be defaulted and forcibly removed from their home. In other words, you can’t “self-quarantine” when you’re sick.
3. Places where people go to get help with displacement will become much harder to reach during the crisis. Hundreds of people get legal and social support each week in an attempt to prevent displacement. But legal systems will be compromised during the crisis. Access to back rent help and mass informational meetings may have to be postponed or curtailed.
4. The stress of eviction court, the stress of threatened displacement will contribute directly to both contracting an illness such as the coronavirus and to how severely it affects you if you do contract the illness.
5. Losing your home will disrupt a family’s ability to secure heath care and necessary medicines, thus adversely affecting an individual family and encouraging the spread of the virus. Therefore, we demand, “Close down the eviction court at the Eastern Housing Court, except for evictions by owner occupants, until the coronavirus crisis is past.”
Allowing owner-occupancy evictions recognizes the unique status of owner and tenants who are also neighbors. Such evictions are a tiny fraction of what appears in Housing Court so they could be handled during this emergency without the crowdedness of the normal Thursday morning.

Centered around an American court case, the latest entry to the discussions page touches on legal considerations pertaining to the safeguarding of body/art in light of first amendment free speech protection. Often held as a coverall in fact reasonable time, place and manner restrictions may limit an array of statements. The district court initially ruled ‘that “the act of tattooing” is not protected expression under the First Amendment because, although it is non-verbal conduct expressive of an idea, it is not ‘sufficiently imbued with the elements of communication’. Although judged on different criteria, the paper calls into question a range of assumptions around body/art practices in the country
| ‘The First Amendment, as incorporated and applied against the states through the Fourteenth Amendment, prohibits government restrictions on free speech.16 However, within this broad rule rest several exceptions. Indeed, depending on the type of speech, First Amendment protection may or may not apply. In the broad continuum of speech, “pure” speech involves actual expressive activity, such as writing a book or giving a public oration. Pure speech is afforded the most protection under the Constitution. Additionally, conduct that is not “pure” speech but has a communicative aspect, such as burning a draft card, wearing an armband, or distorting the American flag, generally also receives some First Amendment protection
Nevertheless, even if speech is considered purely expressive in itself, as opposed to conduct that communicates, such a finding does not give the person a free pass to “speak” in all circumstances. For instance, a city or jurisdiction may be able to regulate the time, place, or manner of the speech, provided such a regulation is (1) content- neutral, (2) in furtherance of a significant government interest, (3) narrowly tailored, and (4) leaves open alternative channels of communication of the information. Expressive conduct may also be regulated under the test promulgated in United States v. O’Brien20 which permits narrowly tailored regulation in light of an “important or substantial government interest” that is unrelated to the suppression of speech. While both pure speech and expressive conduct are considered sacred under die First Amendment, and are at least presumptively protected subject to the various tests listed above, other forms of speech are not afforded similar protection. For instance, conduct that is not “sufficiently imbued with elements of communication,” or in other words, conduct that does not obviously communicate an idea, is not similarly exempted. Likewise, conduct that may have certain harmful effects may be regulated even if the conduct is obviously communicative in nature. For example, adult movie theaters and nude dancing are considered “communicative” in nature but can still be constitutionally regulated and banned in a number of areas…
In order for a time, place, or manner restriction to be upheld on free speech grounds, it must be narrowly tailored to serve a significant government interest.95 Anderson did not dispute that the health and safety concerns of tattooing serve a government interest. My niece and the kids seem to be gazing at all the wonderful presents in front of them. There were 18 of us at my sister Linda's house (Kevin and his wife and kids spent it home) and about 100 presents, more or less. We all had a great Christmas because we stole my other sister Karen husband's credit card and charged everything. I love seeing the kid's joyful looks on their faces as they open the gifts. It will be as special as when my brother-in-law Wayne opens his credit card statement in January....

Masculinity and femininity can be considered as the primary elements that formed the world. Most philosophies have the idea of masculinity and femininity to explain the phenomena around the world. For example, in Taoism, the world is built based on the interaction between Yin (femininity) and Yang (masculinity). The balance of masculinity and femininity results in the harmony of the nature. As a subject of understanding the world through visual experience, there is no doubt that photography should involve in the interpretation of masculinity and femininity.
The understanding and presentation of masculinity and femininity varies from people to people. For example, some photographer prefers to show the notion of masculinity and femininity through presenting gender roles, such as Cindy Sherman. Others, such as Raymond Gehman, might prefer to add more interpretation on the idea of masculinity and femininity which is not limited on gender. I, personally, do not limit the understanding of masculinity and femininity just on gender. There are more interpretations of these concepts beyond gender basics. Masculinity conveys feelings of strength and calmness. Femininity conveys feelings of warmness and beauty. Color plays an important role in classifying masculinity and femininity as far as I am concerned. Warm temperature colors always have more feminine elements to the photographs than the cool temperature colors. Although the objects themselves can speak about characteristics of masculinity and femininity to the audience, the color choices of the photos also add more to the picture. For example, over the ten photos I shot for masculinity and femininity, there are conventional objects for the topic such as the nail polish and cigarettes. The make-ups and cigarettes are traditional representation of different genders. It is easy for audience to identify the characteristics of masculinity and femininity within the photos. However, there are also pictures that I chose to make a difference based on using different colors. For instance, there is one photo I shot about a pair of female shoes; however I decided to use a cool temperature color as the primary color for the photo which adds more coldness to the picture, and I, personally, believe that there is more masculinity going on in the picture.
As the primary elements in the universe, every object is made of the combination of masculinity and femininity. Gender is not the only way to identify these two concepts. By interpreting the emotions and feelings behind these two terms, photographer can give more meanings to their photos and create different ways to view the world.
Many organizations publish mission statements. It's an attempt to articulate a reason for being. A mission statement helps each and every team member to stay on task. It helps to prevent efforts from getting so diversified that the organization's purpose is forgotten.
As part of my training, I was taught to create a personal mission statement. I've never posted it anywhere, or committed it to memory, so I cannot type it here. Perhaps I should find it, after all these years, and see if I still identify with it.
I do recall that part of the process of creating the statement involved attention to the verbs. This school's mission has only one verb: prepare! They exist to prepare.
