I put on my Magic Hat and this winter seasonal brew was quite tasty!! Put a little doohickey over the lens and got some fun star bokeh!!
ETA: Sorry about the lack of explanation on the doohickey. I was being rushed by my daughter!! This is a DIY technique. I taped a black circle made out of construction paper over the lens with a star cut in the center ... just like I did with the heart shaped bokeh shot I did not too long ago! Here is a link that explains it all:

Happy Tipsy Tuesday!!
Part of the display of entries for the Bokeh brief in the 2009 Canon EOS Photo5 competition - and some of the 100's and 1000's brief on the left. The bokeh brief went around a corner which made it a bit hard to shoot (not to mention the lighting).
I was supposed to be heading north towards Queensland today but a change in plans meant I had the chance to travel to the 2009 Canon EOS Photo5 exhibition at Carriageworks in Sydney. I'm glad I did. It was great to see all the entries displayed (over 7000 in total), including large prints of the 10 finalists in each of the 5 briefs.
I took a few shots to help give an idea of the display for anyone who can't/couldn't make it. Seeing so many individual photos displayed in this way was quite amazing - and obviously a lot of time and effort was put in to the set-up.
(Seeing my own shot (top left) printed as one of the finalists was an extra bonus and a real thrill since I've never seen any of my shots printed in large size like this before, let alone in an exhibition).
Following a heavy ice storm that struck the area, the sun came out to reveal some fleeting natural beauty.
Shot with a 50mm lens at f/1.4, 1/90 sec, 100 ISO. A ND2 filter and a hand-cut gel was used as a vignette to create the star shaped bokeh.
FGR-Xmas Lights
This is my first attempt at something like this. I could not find any black paper to make the star "filter" with so I just used a note card. Its also hard to hold the card and hold my hand still after manually focusing my d40 with my new 50mm lens. Oh well (12/1/08)
I ventured down my street yesterday with the 7D II and Lensbaby Spark in hand with the intent of trying out the star shaped aperture insert when a patch of very tall grass caught my eye.
I thought that if I photographed a seedhead that I could create some interesting star highlights caused by the light glistening off the leaves behind my point of focus.
After taking my first shot, I looked just below the top of the seed head to find two frogs hanging out on the highest leaf (slightly lower than eye level, about 5 1/2 feet off the ground). I was amazed at the frogs' relentless gripping power as the grass kept moving about in the moderate gusts of wind.
Manually focusing using the Lensbaby Spark is not easy, and it's especially more difficult when you add in a moving subject. However, my persistence paid off when I captured this image. The frogs aren't perfectly in focus, but they're close enough.
I'm not sure I had the best creative aperture blade in the lens at the time, but the effect of the background highlights is growing on me.

Week #30 ~ custom bokeh
Crocosmia, montbretia, is a small genus of flowering plants in the iris family, Iridaceae. It is native to the grasslands of southern and eastern Africa. Seen everywhere in the Irish countryside from July to September.
My entry for the 2009 Canon Photo5 competition - Bokeh (Experimental) brief, which I am happy to say has made it as a finalist.

Please have a look my entry and all the other finalists using the link above. Voting is easy so if you see something you like please cast a vote. (Of course, if you think my entry fits the 'bokeh/experimental' brief and you like it over the others it would be great to get your vote).
What is Bokeh?
(These are just a couple of definitions/interpretations/opinions pulled from the internet)
1. Bokeh - The Japanese word Boke derived from the verb "bokase" meaning to smudge or make blurry. Pronounced BO-KEH in English. The blurry, or out of focus region behind a subject is called the bokeh. A pleasing bokeh is one which has soft, round edges to the objects. Less enjoyable bokeh is one which has harsh or sharp edges as this can be more distracting to the viewer.
2.Bokeh is the blur, or the æsthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image.
How do these fit in with the 'Star Bokeh" brief in the Canon Photo5 comp?
I'll leave that up to others to decide.

I think the stars are apt for a photo of a planetarium :)
used my DIY star bokeh cut out this morning to take pictures of our early morning frost. It even showed up in the trees :)
