For 'Macro Mondays' theme of 'Ribbon'

Not what I imagined I would produce on a Sunday evening.

Firstly I couldn't find the piece of ribbon I was looking for and had to make do with something else that looked vaguely interesting. This is a piece of ribbon that was wrapped around a chocolate box from a Christmas long past, and forgotten!

I dropped the ribbon onto my table-top and the lit it with just one light. Wanting to get really close I used a macro lens with an extension tube. That got me really close with minimal depth of field and produced a bit of that star bokeh the lens is renown for.

Virtually no post-processing other than a colour adjustment.

Am I pleased with the result - not particularly but it was a change from photographing bottles and at least it goes along with my philosophy of keeping things simple (KISS).

And now I'll probably find the piece of ribbon I was looking for!

Experiment on a rainy day, just for fun:

I made a star filter using a black photo cardboard, in which I cut out a star in the centre, put it on the 50mm vintage Oreston, darkened the room, and switched on a multi-coloured (DNA-like) helical string of fairy lights.

The cut-out star must have been too big for the 1.5 crop sensor (I had not considered that) as some tips seem to be missing : ))

I never would have anticipated the rather abstract result especially at the edges of the image; it must be due to the slightly swirling bokeh of the vintage lens in combination with the helical shape of the chain of fairy lights, I think.

I still am and will be off and on for a little while longer

Good morning and Happy Bokeh Wednesday!

While on the walk yesterday I came to this gorgeous tree mallow plant. It had lots of blooms and I took a good number of close ups. However, I also loved this more far away composition here and wanted to see how Industar61 will handle the sharpness of several flowers and leaves at once and I think it did wonderfully and even the star bokeh is not obtrusive and works also. Additionally, the lens handles colors very well. They look just like in real life.

Padre's Shooting Stars are some of the very first wildflowers that start to bloom around San Diego's Mission Trail Regional Park. Some years I noticed them as early as late in January. Yesterday I noticed them for the first time this year. They are very tiny, maybe the bloom itself 1-1.5 cm long, and delicate. Colors range from white to this pale lavender. The sun was truly blinding yesterday and in the spot where the flowers were it was not possible to get some shade or perfect light, but that is life :-) I am pretty happy with how Industar61 handled this shot. Also, the star bokeh seems to fit well with the shape of the bloom. In the past I have always had trouble with taking satisfactory images of this plant.

I took Industar61 out on the hike yesterday. Not much blooming in the nature yet, but luckily these lovely little blooms started to open up. I think the shape of the little flowers vibes with the shape of the bokeh here at f5.6, so the star bokeh bubbles are still harmonious and look natural here.

I took this image of the San Diego Mountain Lilac (Ceanothus cyaneus) on a hike yesterday. I went out hoping to see some California poppies, but it was a bit too early for them in the are that I was in. However, San Diego Mountain Lilac and also Wild San Diego Sweetpea ( I post an image later) started to bloom already. Soon all hills are going to be covered by blooming Mountain Lilac. It is not as flashy as orange poppies, but the subdued lavender color is amazing, imho.

I choose to take Industar61 with me this time. The thought was if I see some tiny blooms, like in this Lilac or wildflowers, Industar61 will give me more sharpness then my other vintage lenses. I love the rainbow star bokeh here.

I do not think I have ever paid attention to the fact that turtles have nostrils before I took some close-up images of turtles sunbathing near a pond at the San Diego State University campus. 😂

Something sharp today :-) I took this image in my neighbors garden. There are lots of cacti growing around here, but myself I avoid having any plants with needles in my own garden. I prefer to observe from a distance. 😂🌵

Once again, surprisingly or not, the star bokeh appears to be in harmony with this cactus shape, especially the base shape of the needles. Also, now looking at it, this basically unedited photo, seems a bit like a painting and I like it :-)

HBW!! I wanted to participate in the Happy Bokeh Wednesday group contest. The theme for the week was shaped bokeh, man this was tough!! LOL! I wanted something more than just a blur of bokeh lights.

The weather has not been great lately for trying out my new vintage lens Industar61. Yesterday while there was a short window of no rain I ventured out to try to capture some images with the star/hexagon bokeh that this lens is capable of producing at f5.6 and f8. I was looking for compositions where the star bokeh looks in sync and harmonious with whatever the main subject is. These gorgeous pine needles seem to do the trick. Shot in strong wind I was worried I would not be able to get anything in focus, but did managed to get few images.

We bought this little Nativity set for the grandchildren to admire. I might have known it would appear in a photo at some point. I'm running out of Christmas props although we haven't got the decorations down from the loft yet.

Lensbaby Double glass optic + Creative aperture kit + macro converters

My very first Lensbaby shot!

I finally had some time today to test out my new Lensbaby Composer with the Creative Aperture kit's star ring. I set out towards the beach, but the fog was so thick I couldn't even see 5ft in front of me. Not a dream weather situation for photography.

I walked around for a while, but felt so uninspired that I didn't take a single shot. I couldn't see anything i wanted to shoot so I started to walk back. I was literally a block away from my place when I shook my negative attitude off for a few minutes and took a couple of snaps of a man crossing the street parallel to me. I thought the picts looked kind of interesting, so I hung around and shot a few more shots on different settings and using the bendy blurriness (technical term) of the Lensbaby.

This was my 5th shot. I pulled it into Photoshop and did some cross-processing and voila!

The point in all this blab is that you should never give up shooting, even when you are uninspired, uncreative, and negative about your photography. You never know what great shot may find lurking around the next corner, or in this case, through the mist.

So get out there and keep shooting :D

''When the star dies,

Its eye closes; tired of watching,

It flies back to its first bright dream.''

(Dejan Stojanović)

What stars are you interested in catching? Do you long to gaze at the famous kind or those that you see shine in the night sky? It's easy to get distracted by the human variety but we should take time to view the dark skies in remote places to remind ourselves of how vast the universe is. Be your own star, shine brightly to light the way for others to find their way out of the darkness.

Found on a dog walk and could't resist. The very next day the mushroom was gone. Unfortunately someone pulled it out.

Taken with an Industar-61 L/Z - MC 2,8/50 Makro. I really like the bokeh of this vintage lens.
