Stopped by St Peter's Church on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland, ostensibly to see how it's looking amongst the wild flowers that are blooming just now.

This building always brings home to me how the city's cultural roots have ancient origins.

Sobering to think that it was founded more that 1,340 years ago!

This is the view that greets you as you step out of the porch which, in spite of its vaulted ceiling, is on the dark side. Suddenly you're greeted by light and considerable height and a whole succession of vaulted clerestory windows. As you can see, as it was a lovely sunny afternoon, and the stained glass was casting pools of coloured light everywhere.

The architects of the body of the church, inside and outside, were Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson, and it was consecrated in 1826. The local rector (and benefactor) John Lucy then commissioned Sir Gilbert Scott to redesign the apse at one end and the porch at the other. In spite of a gap of 30 years and a change of architects, it all seems to fit together wonderfully.

The Church of St. Peter in the village of Carlton, on the Cambridgeshire border, is a historic parish church with origins in the 13th century. It features a mix of architectural styles, including a Norman doorway, a 15th-century tower, and charming medieval details. Set in a tranquil churchyard, it serves as a centerpiece of the village and reflects the area’s deep historical roots.

St Peter's Church, Willersley. A winner of the Best Kept Village competition, Willersey is a characterful Gloucestershire village with a Worcester postcode situated southwest of Evesham and only 1.7 miles from Broadway. This parish church is beautifully positioned at the end of Church Lane and is surrounded by a traditional churchyard.

St Peter's has a 15th century bell tower with traditional pinnacles and gargoyles. The little north porch is 13th century. The filled-up Norman door can be seen on the south side of the church. The font is pure Norman and the internal pillars and arches are 13th century. These arches are quite remarkable for a village church.

St. Peter's was founded in 1100, fifty years earlier than the foundation of Sibton Abbey, which lies close to the church across the fields.

The earliest surviving parts of the church are the south and east wall of the nave and the Norman south doorway. The nave was widened and enlarged northwards in the 13th century. Later the nave acquired a richly decorated, low pitched Tudor hammerbeam roof.

The tower, complete with large gargoyles at the corners, was built in the 15th. century, but the crenellated parapet was not added until the early 17th. century. The tower once included a the spire which was removed in 1813, and obelisk pinnacles, taken down as unsafe in the 1970's.

In the early 17th. century the north aisle was added, built of stonework, including the 13th. century north doorway, taken from the ruins of Sibton Abbey. The money for the building of the north aisle was given in a will of 1534 by Robert Duckett.

The building was renovated by the architect Edward Charles Hakewill in 1872, when the chancel was rebuilt for the third time and the south wall of the nave re-faced in the Victorian Gothic style, together with the adding of a steeply pitched over-roof to the nave. The restoration was paid for by the Brooke family, industrialists from the north, two years prior to the wedding in the church of their eldest daughter to a mill owner from Halifax.

The church contains the mausoleums for the Scrivener family, Lords of the Manor of Sibton and owners of the abbey ruin since 1610, and the Chapman Barker family, Lords of the Manor of Peasenhall but buried at Sibton because in their heyday, Peasenhall was a mere chapel to Sibton.

The church received Grade: I listed building status, primarily for its surviving medieval features, on 21st. December 1984. (English Heritage Legacy ID: 285349)..

Until I peered through the hedge around the ploughing field, I had no idea there was a church there.

An evening view from the old ferry landing on the River Wear. Across on the north bank, the St Peter's Campus of Sunderland University. It's quiet now, but the students will be back soon.

St. Peter's Island (French: Île Saint-Pierre; German: Sankt Petersinsel) is a peninsula and former island situated in Lake Biel in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It has a length of about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) and a maximum width of 800 metres (2,600 ft). Its highest point is 474 metres (1,555 ft) above sea level or 45 metres (148 ft) above lake level (429 m [ 1,407 ft ]). It was formed in the last Ice Age (see Pleistocene), when the Rhône Glacier reached as far as the Jura mountains. It is a promontory of the Jolimont, above Erlach. Politically the island is split between the municipalities of Erlach and Twann-Tüscherz, the largest part belonging to the latter municipality.

In the late nineteenth century, following the engineering works of the Jura water correction, the water-level of the three lakes of the Seeland have dropped enough to clear the until-then hidden isthmus, linking Cerlier to St. Peter's Island, which has ever since become a peninsula, although separated from the shore by a canal.

Monks of the Cluniac order were the first inhabitants of the island, and built a monastery here in 1127.

Before his expulsion, Jean-Jacques Rousseau spent two months on the island in 1765, calling it the "happiest time of his life". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Island

St.Peter`s Church in Malmö

Was probably founded at the beginning of the 14th century.Although no documents bearing this out exist tuday,we do know that when the Chorch was first mentioned in 1346 it had alredy been consecrated for divine worship. It was dedicated to St.Peter and St.Paul.

St.Peter`s Church has a triple-aisled nave with transept and ambulatory. All of it is built in the so called Baltic Gotihic style. Its closest prototype would appear to be St.Mary`s Church at Lubeck. The exterior of the Church is distinguished by its flying buttresses and elegant arches soaring over aisle and ambulatory alike. The tower was given its present apperarance in 1890.Grouped around the main building are several additional erections. To the north of the tower lies the Baptistery or Merchant`s chapel (Krämarekapellet),beloning to the 15th century. To the south lies St.Anna`s chapel, built around 1500 and dedicated to the mother of the blessed Virgin

The interior of the Church remains mainly in accordance with its orginal plan, including elegantly shaped pillars and arches. The rich frescoes that covered the vault during the middle ages were hidden from the eye in the year 1555 when the entire edifice was whitewashed.During a restoration carried out in the 1850,all traces of the former frescoes were scraped away.

And the holy rays. Vatican city.

Of the noteworthy buildings in Görlitz is the gothic church of St. Peter. It dominates the Neisse river and from the small garden you can clearly see the Polish sister city of Zgorzelec and the new bridge uniting them. This place is really quiet and peaceful and retain all its medieval look.

I came across this interesting church in the village of Wangford which lies 3 miles inland from the coastal resort of Southwold. Standing on a spot where Christians have worshipped for over 800 years the church is a mixture of styles having, like so many churches, been altered and restored over the years. The present parish church is part of the Priory Church of a Cluniac Monastery founded in 1160 AD. Nothing of the original Norman church remains the last signs having been lost when the new tower and chancel were built in the 1860's under a major Victorian restoration project.

More details about the church can be found on the History Of Wangford Church page - www.wangford.net/church/history.php

The best thing I can do for a description of St Peter's in the Wiltshire village of Poulshot, near Devizes, is to copy the text of the Small Pilgrimage Places Network page about the church, which is repoduced with gratitude.

“St Peter’s Church lies in the vale of Seend, to the north of the Salisbury Plain. To truly appreciate the tranquil, peaceful atmosphere present within the St Peter’s, it requires a visit. There is an air of still and calm throughout the church. It is a simple, not large, stone church set apart from the village in the countryside. This makes it a quiet place, being surrounded by fields. Unlike many other historic churches, St Peter’s is a light place, with lots of sunlight, giving it a life giving and open feel. It is a place particularly suited for the Celtic services held there once a month on a Wednesday evening. Its unpretentious nature and peaceful atmosphere make it ideal for quiet contemplation and prayer. Its simplicity makes it a place to concentrate the mind and to centre oneself in the still calm.

“The oldest parts of the church, including the Nave, date to the 13th Century. It underwent considerable alterations in the 15th Century. A fire in the church in 1916 destroyed the main part of the nave roof which was subsequently rebuilt.

The church was built outside of the village and to this day remains set apart from the village. This was thought to be because of Plague fears, which link with the history of St Peter’s through the presence of Plague pits in the churchyard, denoted by the location of skull and crossbones set in the stone on one side of the church. This is a fascinating part of St Peter’s history, giving reason for why the main part of Poulshot is so distant from the church. The history of St Peter’s is also found in the presence of a dole stone in the corner of the churchyard on which alms and dole would have been distributed to those in need in the village.

“The churchyard is a picturesque place, with grassy verges and snowdrops in spring as well as other wildlife throughout the year. Situated where it is, it also has beautiful views of Salisbury plain and the countryside around.”

This stunningly beautiful old church sits on the cliff-tops in Heysham Village, where it overlooks Morecambe Bay. The church is Grade I-listed and considered to be one of England's Thousand Best Churches.

The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as St. Peter's Basilica, is a Late Renaissance church located within the Vatican City. St. Peter's Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, holding 60,000 people. It is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom".

In Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to tradition, first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction of the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed on November 18, 1626.

St. Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions and for its historical associations. It is associated with the papacy, with the Counter-reformation and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age. Contrary to popular misconception, Saint Peter's is not a cathedral, as it is not the seat of a bishop. It is properly termed a papal basilica. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral church of Rome.

The interior of the temple was decorated between 1896 and 1902 in neo-Mudejar modernist style by Pablo Monguió Segura and the plastic artist Salvador Gisbert, who also built a new cloister. We decided to go see St. Peter's Square on our last day in Rome. We couldn't go in, since you need to get tickets in advance to enter it or any part of the vatican. Since we are not Catholic, we did not get tickets. We were there for about 10 minutes when music started playing and the jumbo-trons came to life. The Pope was driving thru the crowd in the square in The Pope Mobile.

Usually when I visit a church, I wander round at least half the outside taking photos before I step inside. In the case of St Peter's in Hampton Lucy, there are so many features outside that it would be at least 10 days before we step across the threshold. Built by its rector John Lucy to replace a medieval church, St Peter ad Vincula is a very grand affair for a small village, with craftsmanship of very high quality. It was consecrated in 1826 and as late as 1858 Sir George Gilbert Scott was commissioned to add a chancel and porch. Both are fine examples of Gothc Revival.

This is the inside of the doors, no doubt also designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1858, which has truly massive bolts.
