Just returned from a wonderful two weeks in the north of Scotland with Steviethewaspwhisperer and Blackbearjim. One of the first of many things they had lined up for me was red squirrels, which I've been wanting to see for years. Of course, as Stevie pointed out the squirrels are all red up there, so to them they are "just squirrels" :-)

Interesting how they almost always draw one front paw up when they stop to look at you.

Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to leave a comment. Truly appreciated!

Showing off a brand new winter coat!

I am not sure about this guy. Is it a young gray Squirrel or a different species all togther. It is smaller than the others I have out there, but they were chasing this one around for some reason.

This afternoon I was sitting in my truck in front of my house, preparing to head down to the lake to check out the action. A car came down the street. It's a VERY quiet, VERY low traffic street. On of 'my' squirrels ran out into the street, and the car ran over it. Didn't slow, didn't swerve, didn't even tap the brakes...just rolled over the squirrel and drove on.

The squirrel was still moving, so I ran down to check. It was obvious that the damage was fatal...but the squirrel was not yet dead...legs were kicking and mouth was moving. Nothing else to be done, so I put and end to its suffering.

I know that many people intensely dislike squirrels -- irrational though that is. I know that hunters take great pleasure -- perhaps even orgasmic -- in blasting the little guys with big guns for the pure testosterone-surging fun of it. For my part, there isn't much of anything more cowardly. The world isn't really all that much worse off for the loss of one little squirrel, but I know that it unsettled my day.

(for what it's worth, I'm over six foot, weigh in at about 235, and have an arsenal of non-hunting guns of various types. I'm more than happy to 'discuss' my love of animals with anyone who would like to.)

"Yes, I have secured this large slice of toast, but I'm not sure what to do with it since it is not my favourite food..."

The picture was taken in November, and we can see the squirrel already has put on the thick gray winter coat!

This little guy comes to the window every morning and stares in until you bring him his morning peanuts.

Walking along the Canal Towpath today with the dogs and came across this Squirrel Kit clinging desperately to the side of a tree, just a few feet from the ground. It was very small and seemed unsure of what to do when it spotted my dogs.

The drey was higher up the tree so this was probably its first foray into the world as it seemed like it hadn't quite mastered its climbing skills!

Who knew squirrels ate mushrooms? And could look so cute while doing so?

This was one of the first red squirrels we saw on our holidays... and it wasn't an easy one to photograph. It always seemed to stop to get some food where a plank of wood was obstructing it's head, or behind a wall where only it's tail was visible. As soon as I got the composition I wanted, it sped off, leaving a 'tail blur'. I got many 'tail blur' shots before getting this one. After that, it ran down the tree and into the forest at full speed. Some animals will do anything to make photography hard.......

Taken during my first visit to Brownsea Island for 15 years.

I'm not going to leave it that long again to return - a beautiful island and a real stronghold for Red Squirrels on English soil.
