It was about 10 degrees above zero and I was driving very slowly on a gravel road with the windows down (so the lenses wouldn't fog and freeze) when I looked up and saw this guy just a few feet from me. No cropping needed- he filled the frame! Not sure who was more surprised- me or him!!

If he stays very still, he thinks no one can see him. ;)

A red squirrel collects mushrooms for later consumption. The main thing they collect are spruce cones that they make large middens (piles) of cones to eat all winter long. However, they've figured out you can't bury mushrooms on the ground as they'll rot. So, they hang them in trees to dry for latter consumption. I tried to follow this guy, but I think he was wise to me and kept running until he outran me before going to his sky midden.

Red Squirrels usually live for 3 - 4 years. Outside of the breeding season females are tolerant of each other. This one was seen in the Cairngorms, Scotland.

The Highlands of Scotland are a good place to find and watch Red Squirrel. The young at birth have whiskers but no fur. They are weaned at 6-7 weeks and at 2 months are independent and active in the area of their nest. This Red Squirrel was seen in Abernethy Forest in the Cairngorms.

Some Grey squirrels are very nervous and shoot off if you so much as blink, whereas others like this little one can let you get quite close.

This little New Hampshire red squirrel seemed quite content. Not even this photographer seemed to bother him.

Two young squirrels were frolicking around a grassy patch, then one ran along the curb next to the area. I was shooting mostly behind a tree, so it approached very closely before it saw me and jumped into the tree.

This squirrel was running down a tree, but then stopped and shut his eyes for several seconds then carried on. It's eyes look fine, so I can only guess it was tired.

Here's a second and last red squirrel portrait from my visit to Pow Hill country park.

Another shot of the Abernethy red squirrels. I'm back in Yorkshire now, just got to unpack and then begin catching up with commenting.

Took this close up of this Red Squirrel when I was in Scotland in August when the weather was much better than it is at the moment.

Happy 2016 Everyone.

This is one of the capture from November when I visited the red squirrels in a freost near home. I want to go there again soon but whenever I have time at the moment the weather seems to be awful.

I was happy to see the one-eyed squirrel in the yard again. She's showing her best side to the camera.
