Woo hoo, a cycling facility put in almost at the very centre of Edinburgh! And now for the whinge...
See, the thing is, if you're going to put a facility in there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Firstly, it should be safe. And secondly, it should be easy to use, therefore making the road easier to use. This does neither.
This is outside a new hotel on George IV Bridge, where the road crosses over the Royal Mile to head down the Mound. The pavement has been widened, no problem with that, but where before there was a bus lane, which then had a bike lane past Victoria Street, the build out of the pavement in the pictures forces everyone from the bus lane right, and does away with the bike lane.
The 5 yards or so after the build-out is not actually a bike lane per se. It's an access lane for a cycle reservoir at an ASL. More than two cars queueing for the lights? You 'aint gonna get into it. And since access lanes such as this have as their sole and primary function the safe and legal passage of pedal cycles into a cycle reservoir when there is a build-up of traffic it's a slight design flaw not being able to use it when there's a build-up of traffic...
Add to that the fact that anyone turning right from the right hand lane (yes, there are two lanes of traffic there) still blocks the left lane enough that cars are 'forced' into broaching the access lane and a few words spring to mind:
"Into the Valley of Death..."
I'd rather they hadn't put this in at all, because it encourages cyclists to scoot up the inside of traffic to reach it (as one of the pictures shows, doing this with buses is particularly inadvisable) and if you get to it just as the lights turn green you're likely to be turned to jam by someone riding into it.
Edinburgh: Model Cycling City. Only in the sense that the traffic planners seem to think the roads are a toy...
This ex-branch line car which was converted into MOW service rests in Portage in August 1992. I was amazed that C.M.St.P.& P. reporting marks was used on this car as I thought that active use of this style of canted logo ended decades before MILW was sold to Soo in 1985. Perhaps it was the only stencil that the shops had handy at the time? Another similar car, #980416 was coupled to it to the left, that one bearing a prominent Hiawatha logo.
A tight-squeeze indeed for Peter Pink, a Southern Vectis conductor in the NBC days of the nineteen-eighties. He is being pushed by Ryde driver Mick Dyer through the diminutive little window that was used to communictae with the depot-clerk when collecting one's wages. On the other side a fellow colleague was ably assisting in the torment. The picture is out of focus as I was standing on the bench used for cash-counting, and unable to contain my mirth at such high-drama,the camera was naturally prone to shake.
I took a bunch of oranges from the dining hall to make 100% pure fresh squeezed orange juice in my dorm room with the juicer I had been searching forever for from home.
Kita is in a manic exploring phase. Right now no place is too small (like this place in the desk meant to support a computer keyboard) or high (see previous picture) for her to investigate. Also nothing is too large or too small to play with!

Andora's by their playpen. :) She likes the company of the hamsters. :D Of all places she can hop about in the living room, she chose to stick by the hams. :)

A duo of First West Yorkshire vehicles are seen in Infirmary Street.
Stationary to the right is 10041, a Volvo B7LA with Wright Eclipse Fusion bodywork. These bendybuses are the only type left in Leeds and time is catching up on them.
Cautiosly squeezing through on the right is 32432, a Volvo B7TL new to Leeds 11 years ago! These vehicles saw out the wonderful Atlanteans that was still at work in the city at the time.
Where does time go!!
