Hexatricha pulverulenta, commonly known as the squeaking longhorn, is a beetle in the family Cerambycidae, the only species in the monotypic genus Hexatricha. It is endemic to New Zealand. It was first described by John O. Westwood in 1843 as Lamia pulverulenta, and later moved into the genus Hexatricha (sometimes incorrectly spelled Hexathrica).
The squeaking longhorn is so called for the noise it makes, by stridulation, when handled. Female beetles lay an egg under the bark of dead or dying trees, especially Pinus radiata or New Zealand beech (Nothofagus). These hatch in 10–19 days, and larvae live under, and feed off, wood for perhaps two or three years. They pupate for 30 days, hatching from spring to autumn (August to April) into adult beetles which live for up to three months.Adults are reluctant fliers.

Yesterday we had rain all day and possibility of it drying out could be good but my cat is checking stuff out with his neck out - he don't like to get his feet dirty.
Wood Duck (Aix sponsa)
This drake Wood Duck was in constant communication with his Mrs. on this particular afternoon. This isn't a species I've spent a lot of time around so their call is still new to me. For my birder friends, it reminds me of a Pine Siskin; a high-pitched, whiny "wwhhhaattt?". For my non-birder friends let's just call it a squeaky toy that's lost some of its air :)
Sure are handsome birds, eh?
A traditional English dish, dating back to the 1700's, which is made from leftovers, so popular after Christmas Day!
Comprising of mashed potato, Brussel Sprouts, peas and carrots, it can also include cabbage. Fried until golden brown, and served in this case with a cut of cold meats, accompanied by tomatoes and a helping of Branston Pickle.
Since Squeaks is like Velcro I was wondering where the little guy was - he can't get out of the back yard anyway so when I look out the back door I find him.
I love the thought of abandon houses. I love the thought of plantation homes of the Deep South. I love the thought of an old log cabin. I love the thought of a castle. And I love the thought of old Western ranch homes. Essentially I love the thought of any place that I think has the potential for an adventure, a hidden room or lots of history. Places to hide your gold. Places to hide from the Indians. Places to store valuables from greedy relations. Places for future generations to find.
I want to explore these places. I want to find their secrets. Their dungeons. Their hidden staircases. Their secret closets.
I pretend and dream. And sometimes when its dark outside and the wind is howling I walk up the stairs. Pop. Squeak. Crrrreeeeek. Sometimes I wish I had a flashlight. Sometimes I wonder what's waiting for me at the top of the stairs. Will someone jump out? Will I fall through the floor? Alas, its only my house. And I know where the lightswitch is when I reach the top of the stairs. But sometime, sometime, that story might be different. I have prepared myself mentally. An abandoned house. A dreary castle. A lone log cabin. Those buildings call my name...

The only time I had ever driven to Kananaskis (the mountain area closest to Calgary) was fairly recently, on 10 September 2016, when my daughter came with me. I wasn't too impressed with the photos I took on the first drive, especially of the little Pikas (Rock Rabbits) that we went to see, so I wanted to go and spend a bit more time with them. A drive like this is also helping me get a bit more used to my new car - before the roads are covered in snow and ice! Actually, there was a bit of snow on the ground in places close to the trees when I got to where I see these Pikas.
I left home at 8:45 am, later than I had intended, and drove southwards via Millarville and the back way to Highway 40. When I Googled the distance via that route, it gave me 134 km, 1 hr 41 mins from home to the Highwood Pass. Needless to say, I kept stopping to take photos, so it took me longer than that. By the time I got back home around 5:00 pm, I had driven 299 km. This day was a Monday, so not too much traffic anywhere, which makes a huge difference.
The weather cooperated very nicely. A little chilly to start with and a sky full of beautiful cloud formation early morning. This time, I only drove as far as the Pikas, just north of the Highwood Pass, especially as I wanted to make sure that I wasn't driving home in the dark. The Highwood Pass, at an elevation of 2,206 m (7,238 ft) is the highest paved pass in Canada. In past years, I have hiked the Ptarmigan Cirque, Pocaterra and Arethusa Cirque trails, but can no longer do hikes like these. The scenery is breathtaking in this whole area (indeed, for the whole drive), some mountain slopes covered in forest and other mountain faces displaying bald, breathtaking folds above the treeline.
There was only one scary incident on this trip. I had stopped to take a few scenic shots when I was on the backroad to join Highway 40. I didn't close my car door completely and when I went to open it, I discovered it was locked! Pressing the fob to open all the doors did nothing. I just could not get into my vehicle. Thank goodness, I had read on the Internet that there is a key hidden away inside the fob - otherwise I would never have known and might still be standing there, lol! It kind of reminded me of an incident on our recent trip to Plateau Mt, when we stopped at an outhouse en route - and I could not unlock the door to get out. Thank goodness I was not on my own that day, so I was able to pound on the door and friend, Sandy, came over and unlocked the door from the outside!! Brought back memories of when my kids were little and one of them got locked inside an outhouse and, ever since then, I remember it every single time I have to use one.
Feels so good to know that I am now comfortable enough to do this drive on my own, after so many years of wishing I had the courage to do it. Thank you, little Pikas, for being so adorably cute, that I was determined to drive back to see you : )

The shot was taken inside the forbidden city in Beijing, China. The place was nice, but I had a really bad sky, and it's hard to find something to take photos of. The child in the photo was however very funny to watch. His shoes squeked when he walked, but he couldn't understand where the noise came from. (Squeaking shoes for children are very popular in China)
Here's a view of the entire shelving and you can kinda of see more poodles peeking out of the one side - It's always such a pleasure seeing Kate's collection!!! Thanks Kate for a wonderful day!!!!
They live in what look like uninhabitable places - slopes covered in nothing but rock, usually right around treeline.
Your first indication they they're in there is a loud "SQUEAK!!" like somebody stepped on a yellow rubber duckie.
It's the pika, the most industrious critter we've ever seen - and maybe the cutest.
