I didn't have any treats for Ivy, so I used a squeak toy to maintain her attention. She'd just finished a walk and was feeling energized. I take her out for 1.5 miles every day while her owners are away. She's an odd mix of many breeds, most notably cattle dog and Maltese.

It was very cute and very little

Wood Ducklings fresh out of the tree - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)

I was sitting on the back stairs when I saw a small bird on the ground moving in a strange way that made me think it was a Woodcock. But then when I looked at it through my binoculars, gees Louise, it was a duck!

It seemed it must have hatched later than its siblings, and was following the rest of the hatch (that were calling out to it and/or their absentee parents) downhill to a little stream at the bottom of the grade. I ran to get my 6, but by the time I got it together the little troop was within 50 feet of the stream where I managed to get a half dozen captures before they disappeared into a 3 foot drain pipe where the stream went under a road.

All in all an exciting 15 minutes!

Who knew there were Wood Ducks nesting right in my own back yard 100 - 200 yards from a little stream on the edge of my neighbor's property?

So... After a breezy day on the levels, with woodpeckers, sun and showers, I went on an owl hunt, parking up to see if the pair that were on the wing last night came out again around the same time... I gave them an hour or so but no show, so I popped over to see another owl that's been an early bird in the past. She was out hunting already, but really struggling with the wind, which had picked up by then. I watched her for an hour or so, but she didn't make a kill...

Guess Where Group: This should be easy to guess - and I do hope someone is quick, because I've got other stuff from the same place!

Weekly theme challenge- Animals

Our resident Long tailed wood mouse. I was sitting 4 feet away and he really doesnt seem to mind :)

A native squirrel, for our region, not very common. He comes when I call, Squeaky. This little guy is very brave and bossy, scaring away other squirrels twice his size. Non stop high pitched squeaking when getting breakfast. He has become a pet. He will come up to me and hangs out while I'm there, knowing he's safe.

Everyone came out for breakfast:

1 Dove

3 black squirrels

2 grey squirrels

1 blue jay

10 or so black capped chickadees

6 + finches

1 grosbeak

and of course sir squeaks alot, a little ground squirrel of some kind.

Mercury wasn't sure if he was allowed to have his squeaky toy outside. I've never heard him squeak so tentatively.

This is Squeak and he is now 10 years old.

He turns up every morning, and throughout the day, and sits on the water butt outside the kitchen window ... waiting for whatever food the cats have left.

Squeak on safari(around the yard).

I always look around to see if I can find something for them to sit in for a photo and I found this lovely candle which is half way burnt down. They seem quite happy in there.

Processed with Snapseed.

Here is another shot of Squeak at the bird bath, after I took this photo, he/she took a quick dip, I guess tasting the waters, he was watching his parents taking a splash earlier, so he through he would try.

I marvel at our 3 cats Bubbles, Squeak and Benny who have never harmed any of our ducks or ducklings yet will chase away any wild duck or bird that comes anywhere near the house yard.

Homer lives just below the weather vane. His family lives in the rest of the house. Homer loves the sound of the vane squeak as it changes direction. The sound covers the noises of the other members of his family. Homer can't stand to hear other people chew or cough. It's a little weird, but, it works for Homer unless the wind stops blowing and then Homer freaks.

Short Movie of a couple of Squeakers in the forest just before sunrise.

For Christmas my bf's mom gave me this beautiful set of vintage china. Today I realized that the tea cups would be a lovely setting to photograph my pukis.

I've edited this picture in photoshop, trying to make it look a little bit vintage. I may try again some other time.

Hexatricha pulverulenta, commonly known as the squeaking longhorn, is a beetle in the family Cerambycidae, the only species in the monotypic genus Hexatricha. It is endemic to New Zealand. It was first described by John O. Westwood in 1843 as Lamia pulverulenta, and later moved into the genus Hexatricha (sometimes incorrectly spelled Hexathrica).

The squeaking longhorn is so called for the noise it makes, by stridulation, when handled. Female beetles lay an egg under the bark of dead or dying trees, especially Pinus radiata or New Zealand beech (Nothofagus). These hatch in 10–19 days, and larvae live under, and feed off, wood for perhaps two or three years. They pupate for 30 days, hatching from spring to autumn (August to April) into adult beetles which live for up to three months.Adults are reluctant fliers.
