While a departing 767-300ER passing over my house north of DFW still has its slats out (probably Flaps 1 setting?), 777-200ERs passing overhead are already all cleaned up and hauling ass like a homesick angel. This is N797AN. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #777 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #avgeekschoolofknowledge #igaviationcontest #instadfw #wearetxgmers #n797an #drivewayspotting #avgeekery

In a past post (see this tag to get to that post- #767300flaps) I had explained the changes that were needed to the 767's wing when the 767-200 was stretched to the -300 variant. This shot shows one of the changes, the drooping inboard aileron which on the -300 acts as a simple flap in concert with the inboard and outboard main flaps. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #ups #767 #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #N354UP #igaviationcontest #avgeekschoolofknowledge #instadfw #avgeekery

Yesterday I posted a shot of an MD-80 on departure along with a description of the autoslat feature that helps protect against stalls. This shot shows the slats in the fully extended position and the gap that opens up between the slats and the wing. Note also how the slats (there are six slat panels on each side) taper- each slat track has a gradually decreasing radius of curvature as you move outward. You can see the slat tracks get smaller. This contrasts with an aircraft like the 737 or A320 that has near-constant chord slats which makes their slat actuation systems simpler. This gradually decreasing radius of curvature on the MD-80 slats is called conical slat motion and to facilitate this scheme, a system of cables wound around different size drums sits in the wing to coordinate conical slat motion. Hydraulics rotate these drums to move the slats. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #mcdonnelldouglas #md80 #american #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #N979TW #avgeekschoolofknowledge #avgeekery

With a large 737-800 fleet powered by the CFM56-7B, it was a no-brainer that American would select the CFM56-5B for their new A319s. Both engine types share a common core, where they differ is the fan- the -7B used on the 737NG is just a -5B with a smaller fan, but differences in the fan blade aerodynamics and engine software offset what would be a less economical engine due to its smaller fan. The fan on the -7B is 60.5 inches in diameter to fit the underwing 737 nacelle but the taller landing gear of the A319/320/321 means the -5B gets a 68.3 inch fan. There are some differences in the core, but many core parts are interchangeable between the two CFM56 variants. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #airbus #A319 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #N9004U #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers

During the design phase of the Boeing 767, the one thing early on Boeing was sure of was that the 767 had to be a wide body twin-aisle aircraft. It wanted a cabin wider than the 707/727/737 but not as wide as the 747. While a wider fuselage offered benefits in terms of cabin size and cargo potential, for the size planned for the 767, a wider fuselage also meant increased drag- a narrow fuselage meant less drag but Boeing wanted something wider than its single-aisle lines. A target of 20-30% lower costs over earlier generation of aircraft would be met with a combination of two engines, system improvements and aerodynamic improvements. A "slim" wide body fuselage was part of this with a fuselage width just over 15 feet, midway between the 707 and the 747. Unfortunately this meant the ubiquitous LD3 container couldn't fit side by side in the underfloor cargo holds, so the LD2 was created just for the 767. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #767 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #avgeekschoolofknowledge #igaviationcontest #instadfw #wearetxgmers #avgeekschoolofknowledge

The short body/non-T-tail King Air 90s and 100s have been in production now 50 years with the first versions being introduced in 1964 and firm the basis for the longer T-tailed King Air 200 and 300 families that at one time were marketed by Beech as Super King Airs. This shot captures a King Air C90 on its landing rollout at Addison Airport. It's this variant that is also a popular military multi engine trainer, in the US Navy it's the T-44 Pegasus. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kads #ads #addison #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #beech #beechcraft #kingair #c90 #kingairnation#megaplane #instaplane #instadfw #instagramaviation #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers #avgeekery

In 1997, when Embraer announced the development of the ERJ-135, it also revealed that work was underway on a 70-seat aircraft that had the nose and cockpit of the ERJ-145/135 combined with a new wing and wider fuselage. Two years later the derivative approach was abandoned and ERJ-170 family arrived at its present configuration with a formal program launch at the 1999 Paris Air Show. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #embraer #ERJ175 #aircanadaexpress #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #CFEJD #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers

Easily 50% of the value of a commercial jetliner lies in its engines, a reflection of the immense technological development new engines require- the Rolls Royce Trent is no exception, with 18,000 parts in many ways it's more complex than the 777 itself. Each small blade in the high pressure turbine moves on a disk spinning at 10,000 RPM in an environment 400F hotter than the melting point of the titanium that makes up the HP turbine blades- each blade only inches high generates the horsepower of a Formula 1 race car at full throttle. The centrifugal forces at the tip of the HP blade are as if a double decker bus were suspended from each blade tip! But despite this harsh environment, each HP turbine blade can operate for 10 million miles before getting replaced! #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #777 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #n795an #instadfw #igaviationcontest #avgeekschoolofknowledge #avgeekery

With the new American colors, it should be a lot easier for the Boeing 767 and 777 to share radomes. They're actually interchangeable parts which isn't surprising given that the cockpit and part of the nose section of the 777 is near identical to that of the 767 from a structural standpoint. With the older American colors, if you saw a 767 or 777 where the cheatlines on the radome didn't quite match the cheatlines on the fuselage, odds are it's got the other type's nose cone/radome. The cheatlines misalign when you swap radomes. With the new American colors, this won't be an issue any longer. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #777 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #n752an #instadfw #igaviationcontest #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers

Mad Dog outbound! Note the leading edge slats here on N9420D aren't extended fully. The MD-80 slats have three positions- up/retracted, extended, and a midway extension called mid sealed as the trailing edge of the slats still touches the wing, "sealing" the slot that would be created if the slats were fully extended. Mid sealed is usually used for takeoff. The next time you're on an MD-80 leaving the gate, watch the slats. They'll extend fully and then back up to the mid sealed position. This is an important built in test of the slats because the MD-80 has a stall protection in what's called autoslats. It was found in flight testing that the MD-80 had good natural warnings (buffet) as it approached stall with the slats retracted and extended. But the stall was more sneaky with the slats at mid sealed for takeoff. Should the aircraft approach stall on takeoff (such as a windshear event), the slats will automatically extend fully. The ground cycling you see of the slats extending and then backing up to mid sealed prior to takeoff is a test of the autoslat function. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #mcdonnelldouglas #md80 #american #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #N9420D #avgeekschoolofknowledge #avgeekery #drivewayspotting

November 16, 1982. That was the day Boeing nearly lost a 757 during the flight test program. It was during a flight into known icing conditions to test the 757's driving systems. Two inches of ice built up on the wings. At the time, Rolls Royce thought a flexible spinner hub on the fan would prevent ice formation instead of a traditional heated fan spinner which would be heavier. It didn't work. Large chunks of ice from the spinners were ingested by the engines, damaging the fan blades to the point that the flight crew had to throttle to idle and coast back to Boeing Field- to descend into terrain around Seattle with insufficient engine power to go around left many shaken, from the flight crew, test engineers, and FAA reps onboard. Rolls had to hurriedly design a traditionally heated spinner hub for the RB211 engines which met the icing criteria and testing. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #boeing #757 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #avgeekschoolofknowledge #n676an #avgeekery

In a swept wing, airflow ideally moves from front to back (chordwise flow) but can also move down the span of the wing (spanwise flow) which is wasteful and can cause the outer wing to stall first. Since the ailerons are on the outer wings, spanwise flow must be prevented so the ailerons don't lose their effectiveness near a stall. Early fighter jets like the MiG-17 used prominent wing fences to prevent spanwise flow. Less-drag inducing are vortilons like the four yellow-painted "teeth" on the outer leading edge of N696AE here. Vortilons were first used on the Douglas DC-9 and are on a wide variety of aircraft and not just the ERJ-145 family- for example, the 737NG has three small vortilons on each wing. They create a vortex that not only energizes the boundary layer increasing lift, but the vortex itself streaming over the leading edge and back also blocks spanwise flow. Not all swept wing aircraft need vortilons, though. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #embraer #erj145 #americaneagle #dfwavgeek #avgeekschoolofknowledge #instadfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #N696AE #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers
