N7537A gies long for the touchdown for 18R at DFW one early morning. So I hear you guys like the AvGeek School of Knowledge. That's good, because I have a ton of near useless aviation trivia to keep sharing. Did you know the legacy DC-9 (all variants up to and including the Series 50) main landing gears angle forward when retracted? The center of the main wheels are 20 inches forward of where they are when down and locked. But on the MD-80, they retract perfectly perpendicular to the long axis of the fuselage. This is because the new wing root additions of the MD-80 wing allow this whereas on the legacy DC-9s, the wing structure doesn't have an "unswept" section internally. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #mcdonnelldouglas #md80 #american #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #N7537A #avgeekschoolofknowledge
On the Douglas DC-9, the thrust reverser buckets when deployed were vertical- top bucket in line with the bottom bucket. This became problematic with some airlines as the lower bucket's thrust efflux would kick up all sorts of FOD that could get sucked into the engine. Air Canada had a fleet of DC-9-10s and DC-9-30s and came up with a fix by angling the lower bucket out 17 degrees which toed in the upper bucket when reverse thrust was selected. Anything kicked up by the lower bucket was blown out to the side away from the engine intake. Many other airlines picked up Air Canada's modification and McDonnell Douglas introduced the 17 degree rotation of the reverser buckets as production standard beginning with the Series 50. Any Series 30 aircraft built after the start if Series 50 production also had this fix as factory standard. So for example, all DC-9-34s have it fresh from the factory, but not all DC-9-33s did. When the MD-80 came along, that angled out reverser buckets was kept despite the newer engines as seen on this landing Mad Dog. Interestingly, despite all new engines and nacelles, the MD-95/717 also has the same angled out reversers! #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #mcdonnelldouglas #md80 #american #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #N7537A #avgeekschoolofknowledge
Went to town today to pick up Claire's stuff from work... Dur, she works at City Gate on St.James Boulevard right near St.James Park (don't even try to correct me) and it was 12.30 (1 hour before kick off against Man City). If I was gonna have to sit in traffic I at least wanted to to try out my Olloclip iPhone attachment along with jag.jr's 635pro. There's some nice buildings here with great razor sharp edges and lines so I pointed to the skies and started shooting with the fisheye attachment.
Ive tickled it in Snapseed and cropped square in Squareready to remove the fisheye black circular sections.
Of all the Embraer ERJ-145 family aircraft so far built (this includes the ERJ-135 and ERJ-140), 68% of them are flying here in the United States with most concentrated in the fleets of ExpressJet and American Eagle. If you were to average out the flight times of all those US-operated ERJ-145 aircraft, the average flight duration is about 79 minutes. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #embraer #erj145 #americaneagle #dfwavgeek #avgeekschoolofknowledge #instadfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #N696AE #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers
Looks like an ERJ-145 but it's not! This is a rather unique version of the Jungle Jet that caters to the scope clauses unique to the US airline industry that limit the seat capacity of some regional airlines- compared to 50 seats on the 145, this ERJ-140 has six less seats for a capacity of 44 and is shorter- in fact, if you count up the windows, you see two less passenger windows on an ERJ-140 reflecting the reduction of two seat rows- or six passengers in the three-abreast cabin. In a pinch? Just count the number of windows between the engine and over wing exit. The 145 has six, the 140 like this one has five windows. You can always count the windows ahead of the over exit as well- the 140 has one less here as well- one row less ahead and behind the wing. Of the 74 ERJ-140s built, American Eagle flies 59 of them, the rest fly with Chautauqua Airlines. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #embraer #erj140 #americaneagle #dfwavgeek #avgeekschoolofknowledge #instadfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers #avgeekery
The leading edge slats of the Boeing 737 are based on the 727 with a single hydraulic actuator for each slat panel that had two tracks on each side of the actuator- on this shot you can see each actuator. On the Classics, there was also a telescoping bleed air conduit that provided anti-ice protection to each outboard slat. On the 737NGs, there's an extra slat outboard due to the longer wing and this extra slat lacks anti-ice protection. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdal #dal #dallas #lovefield #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #southwest #boeing #737 #igerstx #igersdfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #n724sw #swapic #AvGeekSchoolofKnowledge #avgeekery
The tail number caught my attention here, N502MJ is a Mesa CRJ700, nearly all the time the United Express CRJ700s I see at DFW are Skywest birds. But I digress. When Bombardier was developing the CRJ700, they were going to enlarge the CRJ200 wing with a six foot root insert and extend the leading edge forward 9% of the chord, this way much of the CRJ200's wing structure could be used. But computational fluid dynamic analysis verified by wind tunnel testing showed the CRJ200 derived wing wasn't going to work. A new clean sheet wing was created- this allowed the use of a supercritical airfoil, but its straight leading edge (compared with the compound sweep on the CRJ200) allowed for a three-position leading edge slat system for improved field performance to offset the increased weight. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #Bombardier #CRJ700 #unitedexpress #mesa #dfwavgeek #instadfw #instagramaviation #igaviationcontest #N502MJ #avgeekschoolofknowledge #avgeekery
